definitely not firing on all cylinders - Silviniaco Conti and Kauto Stone particularly disappointing today plus the novices yday. Neptune Collonges ran an absolutely heroic race, Celestial Halo probably about right but The Minack looked to me to be struggling before he came down.

He has two yards, does n't he? I wonder if the horses from one are performing better than the other.

Having said that, he's not struggling nearly as much as the Twiston-Davies yard - Crescent Island and Major Mallarkey never sited.

On the bright side if all is back to normal by the feswtival, Conti and Kauto Stone might be a bit of value.

I just thought they were beaten like shot and looks like some have got the plague...definitely worth monitoring with chelt just a month away...twistings horses agree about but don't think I've ecer got him right...

Not worried for the Festival. It's February, not mid-March. Pereversely, Henderson's are in such good form I wonder if he can keep it up.

I checked this out before. My figures could be wrong but -

No runners between Jan 31st and Newbury. Since then 31 runners and only Zarkander emerging  in front(a decent effort i thought on debut, though some argue it is the least he should have done given how well in he appeared to be) with 7 seconds.

I guess the cold snap may have hindered preparations. I would not be too worried as he always has them sweet as a nut for March but I suspect he will be a little concerned.

Re Silviniaco, that was an inexplicably shocking effort. Maybe the greater emphasis on stamina today did for him, he is a horse Nicholls has wanted to keep under wraps, but he did go out like a light. Re Kauto Stone, I do not imagine Ruby expected him to finish like that having took it up so early. If there was a doubt about him finishing the race, he would not have pressed on surely?

worrying stuff when they are getting beaten like they have been stront...silvi well backed and kauto went out like a light...hold fast didn't run a yard as did cedre bleu to name a few...

I agree RC. Ruby must have believed Kauto Stone was going to run the finish out of them, though he possibly tugged his way to the front. SC was most disappointing after jumping beautifully for the first 2+ miles. The Nicholls yard goes through spells like this though - admittedly usually in January - and they usually get the right for March/April.

Harry - bad runs in February do not worry me for the Festival from that yard. As I say, they frequently have a bad mid-Winter.

I agree Strontium, usually around turn of the yr / Jan. If his horses are not right in March, I think it would be the first time in 15 yrs virtually. I always think you can set your watch by Ditcheat so I am not in least concerned - at this stage !

I'd still be interested in Conti come Festival time - Kauto Stone is trickier 'cos we know less about him - really liked his effort in Tingle Creek - should not be overlooked that Riverside Theatre's performance was so good that his owner's hair has grown back.

the going was much softer at Ascot today than the official going description

going by times it was soft, whether that affected anything I couldn't say

Rease - Laugh shocking.

I suspect he will (as he has intimated before I think) save Silviniaco for the race on Friday at Liverpool or the Manifesto.

yes, RC - forgot he'd said that.

A lot of his horses including the good ones are travelling well into races before they hot up & then tailing off. Have to say I'm a bit concerned about the yard. I don't mind trainers not winning if there horses are a touch under par but some of his better horses are just going out like a light on the run in. Zarkandar won yesterday but he really was chucked in and was possibly fortunate that Darlan came down. Something not quite right.

Stront I hear you...but when top yards put the money down on one (silvi) and they go out like a light when others are under performing that worries me and really silvi had every right to win that race today...they went one hell of a gallop in the feltham and he stayed well so that couldn't be used as an excuse...

We've heard this kind of thing with Nicholls in the past and before you know it he has a 5-timer on a Saturday and then telling the press not to listen to the ''doubters''.

You only need to worry if your backing his horses anyway.

If Nicholls string aren't running that well it makes Zarkandar's win yesterday all the more credible imo
By:

When: 19 Feb 12 09:14
FFT, that would be true.

Reflecting on this it's a bit of a mixed bag - What a Friend ran to form and Neptune Collonges ran a stormer yesterday.

Zarkandar wouldn't of won if the mcmanus horses hadn't got in each others way lets get that straight...

HArry I think you are right - this patch usually happens around the turn of the yr into Jan. I suspect the effects of that plus the cold snap maybe? Not sure. This week will be interesting.

yes indeed R.Carver it will...maybe I'm being a tad harsh but do not like it when horses are not finishing there races and are hitting the wall...this sends alarm bells ringing...

the jury is now out and if I were one of the ten?? I'd be saying he is guilty and take him down Grin

Have you told Neptune Collonges he wasn't finishing well?
By:

Good point stront and when a trainer has a big string he is bound to have some that still run well...stoutes horses on the flat last year weren't well but still some were running ok...like I say the jury has gone out to confer and have lots of tea and biscuits plus the usual home made sandwiches Silly

just looked his results for the last fortnight and it don't make pretty reading

not that it matters to me as I won't be backing many of his runners if at all with the possible exception of Rock on Ruby in the Champion

but it would concern me if I had a bunch of ante post tickets
By:
strontium

It's actually the last 2 days Judo as they are the only runners he has had in the last fortnight. He's had 10 placed horses out of 31 runners including 7 seconds, so arguably that's a bit unlucky. However approximatey 10 of them look to have run stinkers.
By:

Stinkers indeed - interesting judo I quite like this rock on ruby myself - just wish he was more fluent at his hurdles...have had a few english pounds ew on him in the without market just think the track at kempton wasn't his bag...am also hoping he ends up nicholls second string and he may end up a big price on the day for the champion...

I know he had the Betfair race earmarked for Zarkandar but that would have been ideal prep for ROR who as you say needs to brush up his jumping - although ROR would have wanted a furious gallop not the farce that the race turned out to be

By:

When: 19 Feb 12 12:13
yes agreed but nicholls said after kmpton he wanted to keep him fresh for cheltenham...I can see him running a massive race back on a track he likes...could be a big price too...
By:
judorick
When: 19 Feb 12 12:17
yes and you might get even bigger in running if they go a million miles an hour and he is pushed along at the back 4 out... might hit 100 even... before producing a big effort up the hill when the price then goes 50....30....15...7.... then who knows?

Nicholls said on Friday he intends to run four in Champion Hurdle - ROR,CH,Brampour and Zarkandar. He also said that those looking after ROR would be pleased with Zarkandar's win - got the impression stable is quite sweet on him.

who's gonna ride all these horses?

zarkandar - jacob
brampour - probably derham?

will he recall some of the jockeys he's sent packing in the past, sam thomas to name one. unless it cuts up and there may be a few jockeys without a ride in the race.

ruby will be on hurricane, ap on binocular.
