My Flora warmed up for a tilt at the Christie’s Foxhunter Chase with an impressive performance in the Mens Open at Chaddesley Corbett on Sunday, beating the useful Findlay’s Find by a cosy five length margin.
The mare was heavily eased all the way down the home straight by Tom David and in truth, the winning margin could easily have been a distance. Trainer Sheila Crow was content with the eight-year-old’s final outing before the Festival: “She had to win impressively today [to prove she was ready for Cheltenham]. She did it nicely, in her own way.” In her previous outing at Newbury, My Flora was prominent throughout and eventually fell two out when beaten. Different tactics were employed on Sunday however, being held up early and gradually picking off the field in the final circuit before asserting herself on the race four from home. The runner-up, Findlay’s Find, a prolific winner of nine Points last term, was simply no match for Crow’s charge who totally outclassed her nearest rival, forbidden to use his turn of foot. My Flora had won over course and distance in December and the trainer was certain that she made the right decision in taking her back to the Worcestershire circuit: “She wouldn’t have liked Haydock yesterday. Today we thought they (Finday’s Find) would make it steady and then go on but people don’t realise how much foot she’s got.” When asked what was the ideal trip for the Foxhunter hopeful, Crow replied: “If she settles, I don’t think she minds [the race distance]. She’s quick enough to win over 2m4f. She’s just at her best when she relaxes. I ride her all the time and you just need to give her a squeeze and she zooms.” |

With you all the way... Barbers shop shytes up IF it gets there in one piece, If the jock holds his nerve and IF Chemical Nickie rembers to stop the pills in time  LOT of "IFs"... BUT any thing that can run in a Gold Cup/Hennesey and get within a furlong of Denman shld be good enough! When did we last have a gold cup calibre hores running in the foxhunters, or put it another way, one that cld genuinely make the first four in a gold cup that year? I'm old enough to remember Double Silk (SUPER STAR hunter who was cruising second circuit of the national when brought down and broke ribs) - he was 150-ish BHR... still a good 7lbs or more behind Barbers Shop at his best |

Already placed in two Gold Cups, I thought Harbour Pilot would be a shoo-in when dropping down to the Foxhunter. Nina did well to stay in the saddle but horse was never going to win. Cost me!

hey chair....what about Kingscliff....was 2nd fav for the gold cup one year (got injured and didn't run....few years later dropped down to the foxhunters..........came 10th!!

Thanks for the posting on My Flora, its good to know he has qualified, and is in good form. I listened to Timeform radio the other day. They had two specialists on point to point racing discussing the race. It was an interesting listen for 20 minutes! But when asked who they thought would win, they had both already backed My Flora!! I also liked the sound of Bradley as an outsider. he won the other day, and is my other pick at a big price. Will be doing a reverse exacta, so think of me if it comes off!! |

When Kingscliff returned to the Foxhunter, he was 12 and had gone. Harbour Pilot made a shocking mistake and was also 11 at the time with plenty of miles on the clock. I don't think these examples should be used to state that Gold Cup class horses can't win the Foxhunter. Baby Run was a 130-odd rated chaser and hasn't been all that far away from picking up the last 3.
I think Baby Run has inspired a few people to take decent horses that would otherwise be up against it in handicaps hunter chasing - in practice even winning the Foxhunter might not affect the handicap mark significantly so why not let them enjoy themselves and grab a bit if prize money I am very interested to see how horses like Chapoturgeon, and Barbers Shop/Gwanako (if they qualify) perform. This is exactly the profile of horse I was looking for this race and I will focus on in future. |

She was beaten at Newbury, but they felt she didnt like being ridden prominently.
They have changed the tactics since and goes there with a good chance imo |

Connections felt he ran below expectations, so Im willing to give her a second chance. |

Certainly hard to muster much else from the PTP ranks - maybe she will be better for the extra stamina test and the winner will be inconvenienced by it but she is only a few points bigger and I expect time to show that race to be the first time she took on decent NH horses

I feel the fact she is only 12.5 means the shrewd point to point boys (of which I am not one!) are backing her. There are plenty of horses that turn over form at Cheltenham, I'm hoping My Flora is one of them! I'm looking forward for Bradley too. This one has a decent chance too |

racing post price guide has racing demon at 33s which would be interesting but i don't think it can qualify now so my preference is for roulez cool but maybe they'll miss cheltenham for the national - any one got any info?

I asked SWC a few weeks ago and he said the plan was for RC to go straight to Chelt for the Foxhunters!
Things may have changed in the meantime but that was the plan |

I recall reading a quote from the Queen's NH racing manager saying that he'll run if he can get qualified and he'll probably be her only runner at the Festival. In last Saturday's RP I think.
