Your definition of "hard at work all the way to line" is different from mine then. I know he didn't stroll all the way but he has just won by 15 l and 17 l.

Thought he was novicey at times and he was entitled to win as he did, more will be required if he is to step up to the challange come march but as the previous post rightly points out we are generally none the wiser about his chances in the supreme

Alan King's Montbazon showed exactly why he was sent off at the prohibitive odds of 1-10 in the attheraces.com Track Your Favourite Horse Maiden Hurdle at Plumpton.
Considered a live contender for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham, Montbazon had finished just a length behind the smart Colour Squadron on his first start out of bumpers at Newbury. The only brief moment of concern for Wayne Hutchinson was when Montbazon jumped to the right at the third-last and cannoned into Victor Leudorum. But he quickly recovered to finish 15 lengths in front of that rival. "We won't have learned a lot from that but he's a smashing horse," said King. "I'd like to give him a bit more practice and we might look at the Listed hurdle at Exeter in a couple of weeks." |
|
By:
Odd choice of race today imo. Wouldnt want to be having a hard race in anything more than 2 weeks from now, but cant help but feel he is going to need a proper test to give him the best chance in the big one.
Suppose that Exeter race fits in with that plan.... but my gut feel is that they are erring on the side of caution with him instead of pitching him against the best as he isnt quite ready yet? |
|
By:
You could be right. King said after the race he is still an immature horse to the RP. Not what I wanted to here, but you can see he is still a bit keen in his races, especially with the high cruising speed.
As for having a hard race in Feb, I see no problem with it at this horse has not raced since November and had a mid-winter break. He could do with some toughening up imo. |
|
By:
I see no problem with it either mate, just that it would want to be in the next fortnight imo. Wouldnt want to be going to the Supreme with anything less than 4 weeks between runs myself, especially if he does get the tough race he probably needs.
I had a smidge on at 20's but will be surprised if he wins as it stands today. |

MONTBAZON opened his account over hurdles at the second time of asking as the leading William Hill Supreme Novices' Hurdle hope had little problem accounting for his rivals.
RELATED LINKS Full result Supreme Novice betting Free bets The Alan King-trained five-year-old was sent off a 1-10 chance for this after an encouraging second behind Colour Squadron on his hurdling debut last month, and he obliged by 15 lengths from his nearest pursuer Victor Leudorum with a further 17 lengths back to the third home Edlomond. Despite the margin of the win, those who took the short odds about Montbazon would have had a heart-in-mouth moment at the third last when he jumped to the right and clashed with Victor Leudorum, resulting in Wayne Hutchinson becoming momentarily unbalanced. After that blunder it was plain sailing for Montbazon, a top-class performer in bumpers, who took it up at the bottom of the track before sauntering home with a performance which saw his Cheltenham odds clipped to 16-1 (from 20) by BetVictor. King said: "You are on a hidingto nothing with these sorts and I usually get them beat. "Sir Harry Ormesher, carrying the same colours, was 1-12 here once and got beaten. "That told us nothing but it was more practice. He will have to go somewhere and we might look at the Listed novices' race at Exeter in a couple of weeks. "He is a gorgeous horse but has been a bit immature." |

Happy with that, jumped ok and should help him come along, one more run and should hopefully be spot on when it counts.
|
|
By:
Personally if jumps like that has no chance in Supreme, and i have had few pounds on him imo.
|
|
By:
He jumped ok,but the reason hes having these races is to gain more experience and be ready for March, thats when his ok jumping may be more to your liking.
Plumpton is a tricky course for a novice as well, that will stand him in good stead. |

Taken from King's website this morning. Connections sound very upbeat, but for me i'd hoping to see something a bit more next time out.
WE have done well with our excursions down to Plumpton this winter, and Montbazon made Alan’s trip to Sussex worthwhile when opening his account over hurdles there on Monday without breaking sweat. Montbazon, who started at the prohibitive odds of 1-10, totally outclassed the opposition, and Wayne Hutchinson, who brought him home 15 lengths clear, confessed that his only moment of anxiety came at the third last when the favourite landed awkwardly and he almost came out of the side door. However, the heart fluttered only for a split second, and Alan, relieved to get Montbazon back on the road, made no secret how highly he rates this smart youngster. He said: “Montbazon was our best bumper last season and just met a good ‘un in Steps to Freedom at Aintree. “He had a touch of sore shins after reappearing in another bumper at Cheltenham in the autumn so we gave him a break, and he did nothing wrong when chasing home Colour Squadron on his jumping debut in testing ground at Newbury in December. “Colour Squadron upheld that form when only just being beaten in the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown next time, but it was good to get Montbazon going again today. “He is too good a mover to have enjoyed the sort of ground that he encountered at Newbury and it was not nearly so bad at Plumpton, and, though we learned absolutely nothing there, he is a smashing horse and we are definitely thinking in terms of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. “However, I would like to get another run into Montbazon to give him more match-practice, and he might go to Exeter on February 12 for a Listed Hurdle.” |

Is the Listed Hurdle at Exeter they are referring to the one that Spirit Son won last season before the Supreme?

Yep

Only 6 runners on Sunday but a trappy little contest nonetheless.
Molotof OR 147 Urbain De Sivola OR 144 Montbazon OR 140 I think I would put Molotof in as Fav here on the basis he has the edge on experience (7 runs,3 wins) and has won his last 3 races including a Listed and Grade 2. Urbain De Sivola has been brought along steadily, typical Nick Williams, and was ultra-impressive at Newbury when easily despatching the highly regarded Ranjaan by 10 lenghts who has won twice since. Montbazon has decent form with Colour Squadron and his last run was nothing but a schooling session. As a Montbazon backer for the Supreme i'd be dead happy if he beat these two. And I hope he does. We'll see on Sunday! |
|
By:
I hope he does too mate
would make the 20/1 i got on ladbrokes look very tasty odds indeed |
|
By:
i also think montbazon is value at around 20 to 1 , will surely improve from 1st 2 runs over hurdles, better ground will suit , after watching the aintree bumper think choc thought he had the whole pack covered and didnt see steps to freedom on the inside , both horses look runners in a weak looking supreme
|
|
By:
Completely agree with that roobish, I think choc got caught out and steps had first run. Just how they've both progressed since then is another matter.
|
|
By:
Huge race tomorrow Sintonian. Absolute screamer. I think Montbzaon may have too much speed for Colour Squadron, though quite what that feeling is based on, I am a little unsure. GL.
|
|
By:
In the interests of realism and value i think most, including my goodself, want to see Montbazon do the business tomorrow, hopefully on the bit. Good luck all.
|
|
By:
Wont be winning on the bit Swagger, 2 decent maybe 3 dangers who could turn him over imo.
|
|
By:
It is R Carver. It is a class 3 hurdle but could quite easily be a graded hurdle.
I'd be hoping Mont at least reverses the form with Colour Squedron on this better ground. |
|
By:
Not backing him today,so As long as he runs well i will be happy, its all about March.

Guys ,
Can you recommend a website I can view videos of races from ? I did watch Monty live but was scrambling to get some more money on him for snh that I didn't really watch it . What did you make of the run ? Must have liked the ground a bit more . TY in advance |

Sporting life website show all RUK races mate.

TY very much . Did you say you were going to the festival. I am going day 1 and 2 and getting slightly excited about building a decent ap portfolio up. Other than not putting 100 on sprinter sacrce @ 5-1 before it beat pc I am happy.
Did you watch Zarkander ? Reasonably impressive but I don't think Ruby will be getting off the fly |
|
By:
Montbazon crying out for a fast run race which you usually get for The Supreme and must go really close. Should travel on the bridle to the second last at least on better ground and showed today that he can find off it against a decent ex flat horse who seemed to have everything in his favour.
|
|
By:
SNO2,
Not sure you meant me,but anyway i aint going to Cheltenham. And yes,Zarkander ran well, and you are right,Ruby will be on HF. |
|
By:
Good performance by Mountbazon and having Rober Thornton in the saddle is s abig positive for Cheltenham. Was a shame that Colour Squadron slithered to the ground but that sort of soft fall hopefully won't be a major negative to his chance at Cheltenham.
The pair of them look fair value to me (14.5 and 16.5 on here), especially with doubts about Simonsigs target, and, after todays nasty fall, Darlan turning up. |
|
By:
Simon still has to prove he finds off the bridle for me,no worries on that score with Mont.
Hopefully Darlan is ok,and hes a threat by the looks of it. |
|
By:
Agree Booster. I have to say I was quited pleased with that run.
My first impression was that Colour Squadron looked like he may win before falling, but having watched a replay you can see Montbazon is just getting going and came upsides and headed CS before he took his fall. There was still 2 furlongs to run so it would have been plenty close. And as you say, he found plenty off the bridle which is something that he has been criticised for in the past. All in all I think that was a solid run and I cant see Vulcanite reversing 7 lengths. As for Colour Squadron .. backing a horse a Chelts on the back of a fall is not exactly ideal, but he is entitled to run well. |
|
By:
Yeah buddeliea I was speaking to you. Got to love Ruby . He comes out at the start of the Zarkander race saying Zarkander is ' way skinny enough in price ' . Then they ask if he will be getting off H Fly for Zarkander and he keeps in really pc' just in case he gets injured !
I was impressed by Monty , he stayed on really well and I think he should be able to at least place in the snh. |
|
By:
Think Montbazon needs to arrive on the scene late which should be ideal for the Supreme. As good a chance as any IMO

Montbazon (9/4) provided Robert Thornton with a return winner in a classy renewal of the Betfair Don't Settle For Less Novices' Hurdle at Newbury on Friday.
The Alan King-trained five-year-old showed plenty of progress from his Plumpton victory last month to beat Vulcanite with seven lengths in hand. But the result might have been very different had Colour Squadron not fallen at the second last when still going well under Richard Johnson. Vulcanite set the pace for the first mile-and-a-half before being challenged by the eventual winner and the Hobbs novice, who threw away victory in the Tolworth Hurdle last time out. But once Colour Squadron had departed Thornton, who only returned from a long injury absence earlier this week, was always in command. He pulled clear on the run from the last hurdle to score impressively and put himself in the frame for a run at the Cheltenham Festival next month. Thornton said: "I'm delighted to be back. "I think he's definitely a Cheltenham contender. "He is a good horse, but in the past we've ridden him like a very good horse and just crept our way through. "Today Alan said, 'None of this posing, be within a length (of the leader) at the third-last, be upsides at the second-last, and press on'. "He just needs to be set alight these days, which is fine." King said: "I said to Choc (Thornton), 'I don't care how well you are going, at the second-last I want you to press the horse'. "This was to see how good he is and whether he's Cheltenham material - I think he is after that. "He needed a bit of time. He learned at Plumpton when he won, and he has learned again." Paddy Power now make Montbazon 7-1 second favourite, behind Simonsig, for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. E-mail Article Print-Friendly Subscribe to RSS |

trainers comments are encouraging but i wasnt overly impressed, might lay a tad of my 20s off. no idea why vulcanite took the lead either, think a hold up ride will see it closer.
|
|
By:
I'm not wholly sure what to make of Montbazon. He won which is obviously a positive and he had a couple of decent horses behind (Vulcanite and All the Aces) who tie in with other form lines. Montbaz hurdled pretty poorly (but still won). He had to fight, and did, which is a big plus. Yet he just looked very workmanlike on the run in - maybe he lacks the necessary stamina for the supreme and I'd be surprised if there isn't something finishing better. Tough to rate that form for me.

There is a big difference in opinion between some books aswell. As low as 7/1 with PP & Korral. 12/1 elsewhere.
|

By:
Inclined to agree Stront. I expected something a little flashier and was actually taken with Colour Squadron (again) who I expected to be the horse who looked least flashy.
