serious horse!

I didn't see the race but Willie Mullins certainly wasn't hiding anything. He thinks this horse is a beast. Royal Bond possibly his next run.

A potential star emerged at Fairyhouse today when Ruby Walsh steered the Willie Mullins trained Sous Les Cieux to a devastating win in the Fairyhouse Membership 2012 Maiden Hurdle.

Walsh, who was himself completing a treble on the day, held the son of Robin Des Champs up in the early stages before letting the French bred gelding saunter to the front from two out. The gelding then relentlessly galloped to most impressive hard-held six and a half lengths win over reasonable performer and bumper winner Rourke’s Cross.
Afterwards Mullins, himself completing a double, stated “Sous Les Cieux shows a lot at home and while he is still a bit novicey, he’ll be a better horse in a race with more pace.

“He’ll have no trouble coming back to two miles and we’ll have to see where we go now nextI’d not be afraid to bring him anywhere and he’s entered in the Royal Bond and we’ll have to have a think about that.”
Sous Les Cieux subsequently received a quote of 20/1 for both the Neptune and Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival from Stan James bookmakers.

Report tomdeane December 5, 2011 12:10 AM GMT
^ Very possibly in my opinion.

For all that he travelled really well and looks a very smart horse, I thought he flattened out a little close home. That said, we haven't really seen many very smart performances from 2m novices this year (especially this side of the Irish Sea).
Report Can't Catch Me December 5, 2011 2:19 PM GMT
I thought SLC was a big horse who was still not yet at his peak, yet still had enough to hold on. Think there is a lot more to come from him. Couldnt disagree the winner might be better suited to better ground at Chelts though.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan December 5, 2011 4:15 PM GMT
Successful trainer Willie Mullins said: "He exceeded what I thought he'd do and he had to do it the hard way as he took it up a good bit out.
"He enjoyed his jumping and I'm happy that he'll improve from that. He's very light-mouthed but other than that he's uncomplicated.
"We'll look forward to his next run now and we'll see how he comes out of this. He could go for the two miler at Christmas or we could wait for the Deloitte & Touche.(- WHICH IS OVER 2m.2f - in Leopardstown).
"I'd imagine he'll stay further but at the moment we're happy over two miles.
"The ground was pretty tacky today but he handled it and I think he'll go on good ground as well."

Meanwhile Dermot Weld said of Galileo's Choice: "We'll wait for the spring with him now.
"He'll get one run before possibly going to Cheltenham for the Supreme Novice.
"I'm delighted with the way he kept at it today and that was an outstanding novice hurdle."
Report stevo1 December 6, 2011 8:24 AM GMT
Both looked decent prospects on SLC for Supreme and Neptune @ good prices, think given more of a lead would be even better, as was left in front quite a way from home, has speed and stamina and jumps well.
Prefer Supreme personally with ensured fast pace?
Report rhinestone December 6, 2011 4:23 PM GMT
Agree stevo...have a feeling Willie is thinking 2 miles as well, despite most people saying he wants further.
Had them all off the bridle turning in the other day.

Lets hope he stays at 2 miles is my preference for Festival though back in 2 miler and Neptune decent prices, so have aly option closer to meeting, knowing Wille night before dec time! lets hope he makes it there looks very good so far.

that Galileos Whatever could be very smart - get him on good ground

110 or so on the flat? Group winner was he? Will not be opposing him lightly
Report pantom December 15, 2011 12:38 AM GMT
Be careful assuming 2m as similar horse and profile to MDH who showed loads of speed at 2m and raced at 2m only to step up to 21/2 at the festival.Although Mullins had Hurricane Fly in supreme that year who he thought was cert!
I honestly dont think Mullins knows himself the pecking order and who will race where, as i twill depend on ground injuries jockey bookings, so id hold fire personally on this until nearer the time, otherwise its a total gamble knowing what race he goes for.

When its NRNB im going to lump on as I think he looks the real deal!
Report tippu December 15, 2011 3:26 AM GMT
SLC has the hallmarks of a superstar. Fine looking horse who hurdles well. Intrigued to see how he will fit into Willie Mullins' team in the coming weeks. Equally intrigued as to what is the plan for MDH given that the stable has kept the faith.

1/2 for that race! Cant think he should be that short myself....
Report strontium December 20, 2011 12:59 PM GMT
It's common for Willie to run his horses over shorter then step them up in trip at the Festival, often for the first time. Don't think one should read too much in to this running over 2 m now.
Report Mister Westsound December 27, 2011 2:09 PM GMT
Cant see this staying at 2m now.  Ground not dissimilar to what it might encounter in March and beaten fare and square in what looked a decent test.  Winner must have a chance if going for the Supreme

Willie Mullins gave some insight into Sous Les Cieux's disappointing run. He said: "He just ran too free. There was nothing to make the pace so we had to. He'll stick to two miles and a better run race will suit him."

Interesting
Report stevo1 December 28, 2011 12:46 AM GMT
Surely he will be held up off pace next time, but was still disappointing?
Report harry callaghan December 31, 2011 6:46 PM GMT
Looking back at this one, just wonder whether the race came to soon for him after the Royal Bond...a step up in trip and a hold up ride will see this fellow in a better light I'd say...will be interesting to see how he fares after a break and if he turns up in the deloitte you will know your fate in regards the rest of the season.
Report stevo1 December 31, 2011 11:20 PM GMT
Yeah agree with that harry, pulled too hard last time .Still plenty of ability there if they hold on to him bit longer, think even faster run 2 miles would be ok?

He also said, post Future Champions, that he felt a strongly run 2m where he didnt have to make the running would be ideal for the horse.

Bearing in mind Mullins lack of options for the Supreme this year, I think this horse will end up in that race.
Report harry callaghan January 11, 2012 6:57 PM GMT
Well we will see catch me...I'd say the horse is crying out for further time will tell...You will have to forgive him his last run though...but for me he had a hard race in the Royal Bond and that would be my excuse for the horse...his run in the deloitte will tell us more about the horse, who was impressive against Galileos Choice...but he now has something to prove. If he disappoints again I doubt you will even see the horse at Cheltenham.imo
Report Meadow January 13, 2012 8:21 AM GMT
Can't believe VC are a standout 25.1 for the supreme, so I had some.
Report stevo1 January 13, 2012 9:00 AM GMT
Hope you are right Meadow, could look huge price if winning his next race.
Report sintonian January 13, 2012 9:00 AM GMT
This horse reminds me a bit of Zaidpour in his first season over hurdles. He looked a world beater in his first two runs but then got defeated and did not find form again until the same time next season.
Report Meadow January 13, 2012 9:41 AM GMT
The last race seems an off day with the form through Il Fenomeno and Dylan Ross along with what Mullins all said, Ruby taking a pull etc etc.  Zaidpour is a different animal at a shorter price, SLC has the same breeding of two winners from last year, with Boston Bob Neptune bound in fear of Mount Benbulben Wink  Worth a punt.
Report stevo1 January 13, 2012 9:53 AM GMT
Mount Benbulben going to Albert Bartlett according to trainer, Sint know what you saying re Soux Les Cieux also same American owner who has always thought world of this horse, next time out in will tell the tale.
As stated before if he gets bit of cover, with better pace think we can forget blip last time.
On at big prices also Mono Man and Cash and Go as back ups, chance hopefully of at least one making it to post, as race this year looks wide open. Time for bed now after 12 hr nightshift, good luck with any punting this w-end.
Report Can't Catch Me January 13, 2012 10:46 AM GMT
I definitely think he's alot better than he showed last time, but still cant see him winning a Supreme myself.
Report harry callaghan January 13, 2012 6:35 PM GMT
For me if the Royal Bond hasn't left its mark for the season, this horse will be better served by the Neptune...he still has to prove he can go on better ground but walsh who also thinks the horse wants a trip, thought he would go on better ground but all his form so far has been run on soft going...the deloitte will tell us whether he will go to Cheltenham and what race he should contest...he now has something to prove after looking a machine on his first 2 hurdle races...Mullins thought after doing a blinding piece of work before the future champs race that it may have affected him...time will tell but I would say if he disappointed again in the deloitte then they may give Chelt a miss I would if he were mine...lets hope he can prove his worth again in the deloitte.

Report harry callaghan February 9, 2012 8:22 PM GMT
bit unfair catch me - when you look at the horses beaten today pal...raptor doesn't look like he has gone on after his fall...gagewell having first run back after a layoff and inadequate trip, and the mare still has to prove herself over fences and would want better ground...lets judge him on some better types i'd say...

Report stevo1 March 3, 2012 8:38 AM GMT
Yes Harry was getting bit excited for moment as on large prices for Supreme, who knows though with Mr Mullins.
Thought Supreme may have been easier to go close off end to end gallop, and more open than Neptune.
Anyway not long to go now cant wait to get down there. Wish you best of with any bets had.
Report harry callaghan March 3, 2012 8:49 AM GMT
yes and yourself pal has been a good thread...well looking at the races I would say the neptune is weaker in regards depth...but like you say who knows with mullins...to be honest I really fancy one strong in the albert so as soon as I am certain he is going the neptune route we will be getting out the artillery...be lucky any strong fancies steve?
Report Meadow March 3, 2012 9:08 AM GMT
In Paul Jones guide the owner is quoted as not wanting to take on Galileos Choice on good ground (Good to Soft??)
Mullins interviews seem to suggest Supreme runner every time, although he was disappointed with the LTO, recognised that he went quicker than anything else trying to catch Benefficient.

If Boston Bob went to the AB (unlikely, I also think Mount Benbulben will reverse the form) then its possible to go to the Neptune.

The lower odds in the Neptune may suggest that there is less in depth.

I've got Sous Les Cieux at 33EW before the royal bond and followed up with 25EW before the deloitte for the supreme and still fancy the horse as having the best form of the entries, he's lined up in every trend race going..

Who's Ruby riding in the supreme?
Report harry callaghan March 3, 2012 9:16 AM GMT
Interesting - I don't think he is quick enough over his hurdles to be a supreme horse myself and when ridden with restraint last time he proved to me he wants further...listen fair enough you want a run for your money but I would be surprised if he went the supreme route but like you say ruby hasn't got a ride unless, if by chance dermot weld put him up on galileos choice who is amateur ridden at present...who knows its very difficult with mullins.
Report stevo1 March 3, 2012 9:16 AM GMT
