As if being deducted ten points and thereby surrendering their SPL crown weren't punishment enough, debt-ridden Rangers now have a 12-month transfer ban to contend with. The SFA have also hit the club with a £160,000 fine for good measure.
Ally McCoist insists the transfer embargo could kill the club and Rangers are already planning to appeal the decision. But that won't aid their immediate plight, namely a trip to Celtic Park.
If ever an Old Firm derby were incidental, this is surely it. Celtic wrapped up the title a fortnight ago, while Rangers are 11 points clear of Motherwell in third. The fans, however, will ensure this is as fiercely contested as any that has gone before it.

Cast your mind back to November 18, back when it stayed light outside until at least 16:00, Rangers were 12 points clear at the top of the SPL and many suspected that Neil Lennon would fail to see out the year in charge of Celtic.
How many would have thought that little over a month later, the Bhoys would be buoyant, the gap would be down to one point, Lennon's position would be more secure than ever and his side would have a chance to close 2011 as leaders?

Celtic's preparations for this trip to the Spanish capital have been disrupted by Sion's repeated attempts to replace them in Group I. The Swiss side beat Celtic 3-1 on aggregate in the qualifiers, but were expelled by UEFA for fielding ineligible players. Sion's appeal fell on deaf ears, bringing to an end the longest "will they, won't they?" saga since Penny and Vince's tortuous romance in "Just Good Friends."
Celtic's European away record has been famously pitiful in recent years, and they haven't won on the continent since they beat Dinamo Moscow in 2009. If you count the 3-1 loss at Sion, they've lost on five of their last seven European road-trips. Celtic have won five out of six SPL matches, but against relatively weak opponents that's to be expected.
