Firstly, I'd like to dispel any suggestions made on here that I have reached that higher plane...........that higher plane reserved for .....
sound of angels singing ........ "WINNERS"
Losing on the punt is as easy to do as ever. Illusions of safety against that reality are exactly that.......illusions.
This could be a bit all over the shop but ....oh well.
Now, housekeeping done, here's some opinions. I would hope others will offer their own as well as failings, successes and strategies.
The new environment, including Betfair
surely provides for a myriad of approaches previously unavailable., for example???, the guys who create
a higher percentage market that activates once they go in-play...catering for the "missed getting on before the jump" punters???...Anyhoo......
PART 1. FINDING WINNERS
We all know my strategy to find winners. Think I've been doing it without any form study for over 2 years now.....never collected as often as I do now, after
40 years on the punt. Apart from gaining confidence (read $take) when "quality" trainer and rider are involved, I find the less thinking/ interpreting....the
better. ..................Race distance - Horse appearance- CONCLUSION.
A LITTLE FORM KNOWLEDGE IS DANGEROUS
For the "form" punter , I think I proved to myself , IF YOU'RE NOT DOING THE WHOLE NINE YARDS OF EVERYTHING you will lose consistently and
regularly. Including - Replays, weights, speed maps, course details, track bias, rider rating, trainer rating, bias.....etc etc....yawwwwwwwwwwn
If you do ALL that stuff you still might lose regularly.............but you're at least a chance.
Should the recreational form punter have two or three bets a day?........PLACE bets?...to steady the ship (read-Plug the holes
)
Which leads me to another query I have is "motivation". I often think I could use a Place betting strategy...or a more military approach
to my
punting......but do I want that?....I do it for fun, I enjoy the challenge........but then......it's more fun when you win.........oh yeah, sista...you know it.
hmmmmmmmm. A balance, my Kingdom for a balance!!!!
PART 2 - GOOD BETTING STRATEGIES( MUCH HARDER THAN PART 1)
Oh yeah, the domain of emotion and confidence.
All NINE "FORM" YARDS are worthless if Part 2 doesn't match up. Spoke to someone recently who said " When I back a winner, I stop for the day. Too many
times I've backed winners and walked out with the arse out of my strides".
I vaguely remember the sensation myself.
Spose that falls into the "motivation" category as well. Are you/we there to have a punt.....or to win???
Backing more than 1 in a race, "saving", dutching, level stakes, all points worthy of discussion. As are many, i'm sure, that I haven't touched on.
Differences of opinion are expected............... Manners are free.
Trotting punters included., ....... shoot away fellas.

horse appearance tick most important horses racing pattern verses barrier and track bias next call it speed map perhaps back or lay accordingly as for betting strategies have more on the winners than the losers might sound whacky but if you have reached the holy grail of picking more winners than losers that's whats gunna happen horse appearance that's the key trainers and jockeys body language to a much lessor extent anyways you get that for free horsesappearance say no more or everyone will know as much as that 96,5476 fitness bloke who by the way is on the right path but explains it the way way wrong way

Two points:
1. Your point about form is very correct, Trying to go 'half' way with your analysis, and putting in a little time but not a lot, often creates the illusion that one is an 'expert'. This is very dangerous. Everyone should be clear that being a winning punter is very rare, and requires a tremendous amount of work. I have never found any short cuts to that. This is why I often challenge (hopefully for their own good), people who think they are an expert on too many races, codes etc, because they are clearly not putting the hours in to each race, or subset of the sport. Of course, absolutely nothing wrong with this as a recreational punter, but be honest about the time you put in, and you won't lose your shirt. 2. The emotional battle remains the most important part of this whole caper, and I am sure challenges us all at different times. I think the most important thing in this respect is to understand, at all times, that you don't judge yourself on one race, or one day, and have to win all the time. To be successful you need to win over the journey, and understand that everyone will have losing days. Having a losing day should day should create emotional despair. Think of the journey, always .......... 3. Don't follow the Betfair forum (actually probably should have made this number 1) |

no substitute for being on track absolutely none remember the bloke who used to wear the full blonde wig an sunnies in melb was younghish in the 90s caught him buying a 200thou yearling at the sydani easter yearling sales what was that all about he was about for years and to this day would have no idea who he was mind there was only 1 or 2 racecourse dicks in those days racing integrity would be strip searching today which leads me to the dude pinched for betting at the tennis remember when phones thenlaptops were barred on track racing integrity couldn't do jack when the yups turned up for the spring carnival what were they gunna do throw them all off track don't think so change the rules instead haven said that there was a huge advantage to having a phone on track when they were illegal I imagine

As someone who has lived off the punt for forty years, I have two pieces of advice.
Keep meticulous records of wins and loses, so you can judge how you are going. Look at the big picture and put more importance on monthly and yearly results than in daily or weekly ones. The other, which can be difficult for some, is try to stay on an even keel emotionally. Don't get too excited about a big win and don't get down on yourself after a bad day. |

just look for the stables with the exception strike rates who improve horses by 5 lengths in a couple of weeks

 good posts Spear & VK ... something i would have liked to have written myself but couldn't find the best outlet of expression micro and macro views ... outside of the work done just with the runner's form the micro view - bet wise if the bet size literally 'doesn't matter' then the focus can be solely on the 'selection' ... and NOT on the result the macro view stepping back from the view of 'your' selection and seeing a 'bigger' picture in relation to events - especially in regard to a stables progress (for whatever reason) good thread start Spoon ... forming into something very solid |

Don't follow the Betfair forum I'd guess some of the recreational punters might disagree in the case of specific posters. Danehill123 for example. I think the most important thing in this respect is to understand, at all times, that you don't judge yourself on one race, or one day, and have to win all the time. Agree.....Very important for mojo/confidence. |

I personally find that if I can nail the left hand non dominant hand throw of my scrunched up plastic newspaper wrapping into the rubbish bin from the chair in my study then I know that I'm still in form, if not I know that I may be headed into unknown and dangerous waters. I find that to be a pretty much foolproof system as there's a very high degree of difficulty involved in nailing that throw. When it's nothing but net I know that life's sweet.
