So they are forcing us to pick them up out of the ocean AFL?

Why do they row past other Countries to come here AFL?

The have to go to the camps in Indonesia and Malaysia...because they are the closest that process them then they have to settle in a country that has signed the treaty.

i find it amusing, the boat that sunk with all those people on board, had a satelite phone and the australian federal police emergency ph number, they said they are taking on water.

when the first ship to approach ( non navy ) witness suspected they were scuttling the junk boat as they approached.

I'll answer your question:
No I would not wait 45 years, i would seek asylum in a country where the waiting list wasn't so long. After all, if my life was in danger I wouldn't care what country it was as long as i was safe.

You would make a great politician AFL.
Shall i assume you aren't going to answer my question?

Yemen, one of the world's poorest countries, received more than 100,000 asylum seekers and migrants in 2011 who crossed the Gulf of Aden by boat.  57,000 people arrived by boat in Italy and Malta. Our 'problems' are miniscule by comparison.

Yes Megsy it seems that way...They are forcing the issue...It's all premeditated and planned with the phones and stuff... So how do these refugees afford satellite phones AFL?

Meanwhile, two more asylum boats have arrived at Christmas Island overnight and this morning and authorities are now preparing to transfer the passengers to shore.

Most of the cowards leave the family then send for them later so they can live off the dole.

More like they come over here as only one can afford a ticket over and try to make some quick money so they can bring the rest of the family over and at least have a place to live in (Rent) and food to eat...

It amazes me that some ppl like Greens & Corrinne Grant don't understand this issue. No country like Aust can open its borders to everyone that wants to come here. There are 10s of millions of refugees or displaced ppl around the world & probably just as many that would like to come here if given the chance. Expanding our immigration intake by 20 or 30k will make no difference.

Giving residency quickly to every person that gets on a boat would result in 10 boats every hour taking off from all sorts of places.

At least Gillard & Abbott understand the complexities of this issue & both want to stop the boats.

what would you do if you were in their position??? Australia is an attractive place to come to even with the risk

as AFL rightly points out though, we get a tiny proportion of the people that are seeking asylum world wide - it's blown totally out of whack imo

I would try and do the same thing...and I would be hoping that Womble and AFL could convince everyone to take me in...But when I die in the ocean don't blame the Australian people and make out that they killed me somehow!.

can you imagine 10 million refugees flocking to our shores, australia's 200 odd year history would be shot, non existant.

i remember the asians flooding australian shores, only the rich were on the boats, they cavity searched the adults for diamonds, etc.

the change to australian society did change. Rights workers thought hard for with strikes were thrown out the window when these vietnamese were seen as scab labourers.

the government erred, unlike the european settler who raised large families in the suburbs, ate well, dressed well, worked hard and saved and all this put demand on supply which was good for the country by creating jobs.
where as the vietnamese wouldnt assimilate, 2-3 families lived in one house, living on a 10 kg sack of rice, sending all their money home to vietnam.

the regugees we are recieving are from the same countries, wont work, want disability pensions etc, etc etc.

oh no, the yellow peril - megsy, you're living in the past - the white Australia stuff got booted years ago and rightly so

we've absorbed people from the world over for generations now and should continue to do so, I'd argue it makes us a better country that we can AND makes me proud to be an Australian that we do

agree 100% Lazza - we shouldn't be told to feel guilty when people chasing a better life take a gamble and lose - however, we probably should feel a bit guilty that we don't do more to make the boat journey a less necessary alternative

get a grip u blokes, we take in about 8000 refugees a year, big deal, why shouldnt we extend a hand in need
By:

When: 30 Jun 12 02:39
We do logroller.

And if anyone wants refuge in this great country, then they go go through the correct process like everyone else. If they are simply petrified for their life, there are other closer safe-havens that they can seek refuge in.

darkbaby, we dont take nearly our share, and where does the correct process start when your under fire from war barons where is the so called line to join for these countries.to say there r other safer havens, just doesnt cut it, the UK take nearly 80k refugees a year and they live in a place the size of tasmania

I remember the Asian invasion, i lived in the Cabramatta area from around 78 to 2000 and seen them turn a nice place in to a crime ridden drug capital of Australia.

Nothing but scum moved in to there i can tell you.
