I think its an extremely dangerous, naive and incredibly fanciful position to have on asylum seekers and border security.
I can understand wanting to help, but I don't understand your support of people smuggling (which is what your position does) and your honest belief that we can just accommodate anyone and everyone who travels by boat to this country and as "desperate". I mean it opens a gigantic can of worms, to which you both seem not to understand - I mean, why do we bother having due process and refugee camps. Why have a Visa program or Immigration program - if you can come to Australia by boat and settle without drama. I mean the influx would undoubtedly sky rocket, but you guys don't seem to get that, or the fact that despite our sizeable continent - that we don't have the infrastructure or services to handle our current population littlelone additional thousands. I PLEASE don't try and suggest that your policy (less border security, but wave the boats through) would not increase numbers.....because we all know, the numbers would go through the roof. But they're your views. Thanks for at least giving an opinion without the bleeting emotives. |

Upper house ended up going you're way as well, congrats - I think we both well remember what happened last time the coalition had control of both houses in a parliament, i.e work choices - hopefully we're not heading that way again Was a bad election seat wise for the greens BUT they still got a good solid vote and something to build off, in some ways it's a good reality check and will help them realise that they need to play the game a little more if they want to grow I will give you one thing though Jez, the decision by NSW Labor yesterday to push through the midnight sale of the power supply in NSW was a disgrace - March can't come soon enough, although I am a bit scared of where O'Farrell will take the state and will miss perving on Kristina  |

what a load of c r a p MrBen - i actually think Labor's policy on boat people is stupid, not as stupid, or as expensive as, Nauru but stupid. Both major parties, driven on by the media, have the lost the plot when it comes to the non-issue of boat people. I agree we are wasting way too much money on boat people, we did under Howard and we are under Gillard - we should indeed be spending it on health etc
and that's not the only policy of Labor's I don't agree with, i actually disagree with quite a bit of what they do which is why I vote Green |

If they spent some of the millions inproving conditions in the refugee camps, including protection for residents and speeding the process, then the refugees would see some hope of re-settlement in a reasonable time frame.Then there would be no need for them to travel by sea and further risk their lives.

Spend even more to "fix conditions" making more txpayer money spent and an ever bigger increase in arrival boats.Making the problem bigger, and bigger. last count 197 boats arrived, it was around 100 at last election.At the current rate it will pass 400 before christmas 2011 and expenditure will sail past 2 billion. I never suggested ignoring overstayers by aircraft, not once.
The tragedy that has unfolded today is the reason why I despise soft border control and the encouragement (by way of soft laws) of people smuggling. Those who fancifully believe in waving the green flag on this issue and inviting thousands apon thousands of MORE people to risk there lives - have a good close look at this stomach-sinking mess that has occured off Christmas Island. Can I also say that Press Conference with Acting Prime Minister Wayne Swan was absolutely and utterly awful - the worst presser I have ever seen in my life.
When such a tragedy has occured, mumbling bumbling Wayne Swan....ffs...he was all over the shop. Thankful to hear Julia Gillard will be returning from leave tonight. |

I am deeply saddened, as I'm sure every human being would be at what occured this afternoon - to suggest otherwise and to suggest that the Liberal Party would be celebrating is fkn offensive. But I think this sort of event is an important time (as Scott Morrison said, whilst also expressing deep regret for what had ocurred) to consider the country's position on this issue. May I remind you that the government, including Acting Prime Minister Wayne Swan also today, made comment on the Labor Government's policy on border security and asylum seekers - unfortunately the harsh reality of politics and debate continue despite tragedy. A soft stance = more lives at risk = more of what happened today. Thats the brutal fact you don't like to admit. You both continually ignore people smuggling as an issue - not surprisingly, you know, its like as if you both consider the people smuggler to be doing these asylum seekers a favour, by sending them off in treacherous waters in leaking boats. You both support the increase of numbers in these sort of travels, by way of soft laws and green flags for these sorts of people smuggling missions - I mean isn't that (based on the events we can see can/have occur) inhumane & irresponsible? I'd say yes. In your endeavour to support and harbour these people, you not only severely disadvantage the lives of those (also desperate) people who do the right thing via refugee camps.....but you also support green lighting (with soft laws) the people smuggling travel to this country therefore putting lives in grave danger. Think carefully gents. |

Tony Abbott and the Coalition's policy is to strengthen our borders, introduce tough laws against people smuggling (both of which Gillard also promised but has not delivered) and with these measures deter the number of boats making the journey all together. Thus sucking the life out of the people smuggling business. Again, lets at least use FACTUAL information. |

Based on the comments from wombleoz in the past, basically suggesting conservatives use sneaky emotive scenarios to push strong border policy - you lot believe you own the moral high ground on this issue - but when events like this occur - I believe even strongly, that you truly don't. I don't know how anyone in there right mind could by way of being soft of border control, allow people smuggling to flourish and encourage these desperate people to risk their lives...... |

i've said a number of times that people smugglers are the scum of the earth and the book should be thrown at them, or in cases like this where their actions lead to deaths, the death penalty would be an appropriate penalty

Politics continues to be played. By both sides. Just because you disagree with the Libs, doesn't mean they are unable to match comment with the governments commentary. I think its very clear that this is a policy failure of the Gillard Government - as Andrew Bolt has written in todays Herald Sun. Just as the left will further there arguments on increasing refugee numbers (which to a point I agree with) - the right will naturally push for tougher border laws and a tough stance on people smuggling. During the election campaign, Gillard had ad's all over TV saying she wanted "STRONGER BORDERS" and "TOUGH NEW LAWS AGAINST PEOPLE SMUGGLING"........these are the facts, and the Gillard Government needs to be kept to account now that this tragedy has occurred. I don't want to see more perish on this treacherous journey. |

A cable obtained by WikiLeaks and provided to Fairfax says an unnamed "key Liberal Party strategist" told US diplomats in November last year that the issue of asylum seekers was "fantastic" for the coalition and "the more boats that come the better".

Come on Jez get real - it's well known that the young Liberals have been tasked with flooding places like the Herald Sun comments section, not even you can deny that
I'm sorry if you thought it was implied that you shared that line of thinking, I know you don't and are actually compassionate rather than out and out racist like some of the ones that do The way of the future is in part to look back - there was a bipartisan and welcoming approach to boat people back in the 70's when they were from Vietnam and Cambodia, that's what we need to go back to in some ways. At the same time we have to crack down on people smugglers and reduce the push factors as much as we can. Finally, and most importantly, we need to speed up the processes in places like Indonesia - I heard some guys interviewed today that have been waiting over 2 years to get through the complete approval process - they have already been through most of it - if the option is to sit and wait for years or jump onto a boat and risk your life, I can see why people would take the gamble That's what should happen, unfortunately what will happen is the likes of Bolt will stir up more hatred under the guise of compassion and we'll most likely go hardline again - it is not the answer!!! |

 Will change tact off the boats for a minute. It was announced in QLD today ,during the heights of massive storms if you don't mind (Bligh and co) ,that electricity is rising another 5.3% (not sure if it is effective immediately or the new year) Since privatisation(which gov't said prices would be lower) approx 4 years ago or a bit more, there has been a 60% increase in prices...add the 5.3% today and we are heading north fkn at a rapid rate. Now here's the rub... it was stated as a excuse (weather real or not) that it had to go up because the renewable energy targets have been lifted by the Federal Govt or certainly plan to be. Anna Bligh has announced she is going to write a letter to Julia Gillard with her concerns...well fk me...that ought to do it And this before even a carbon tax is priced in.... So it is clear , if this reason is to be believed , prices are rising to pay for renewable investment ...so we are led to believe The pollie who comes out and says households are going to be the ones who will be taking a "haircut" to pay for the investment required will have my respect as at least they are being honest Certainly don't agree with it but that seems to be the facts... Footnote: Most bank chiefs have reported during the banking Inquiry that rates will rise at least another 1% within 12 months due to funding. Finally, with Swannie's reforms Id imagine the law has been made that the proposed covered bond holders have 1st rights as opposed to depositors in the pecking order in cases of bank collapses |
