I understand Inflation is the No 1 enemy of a market economy but the full employment everyone talks about is unaccurate as you get counted as employed if you are working a 2 hr shift once a week.Inflation destroys bond markets and leads to other pressures but to not invest into Infrastructure because of it is folly.
It is up to the federal gov't to threaten, bully or whatever needs doing to make sure the states aren't frivolous and Rudd is starting down this road i,e Health - but you are exactly right - the vote buying is criminal waste at times and the strange thing it is normally the Libs who row the privatise or perish boat.Ideally , whatever state gov't's have the office I would like to see the reverse in the Fed to keep each other in line |

How can Rudd be the worst PM in history..when it has been his Govt that has kept us out of recession...when the REST OF THE WORLD (CHINA) excepted.... IS IN A RECESSION.
I know you are all going to come back and say it was the LIBs surplus that did it. Well it's no good having the money there if you dont do something with it when the economy demands. The Libs challenged everything he did to stimulate the economy. THEY HAVE BEEN PROVEN WRONG. Clearly they would have spent less to stimulate the economy, and in different areas... Why is their unproven method to stimulate the economy, better than the PROVEN way Labour did it? They have admitted that it would have been necessary to go into deficit to do it and all they are bitching about is by how much, they r just a joke...that do not deserve to win an election. |

Seriously how could you vote for anyone that appoints that tool Barnaby Joice to do anything to do with finance because he used to be an accountant. He soon demoted him when he realised the people knew. So Abboott apoints him because he was the Best for the job???? LOL Great judgement Tony. lol

This is a great Democratic Country. Almost everyone can vote, can have an opinion on everything that happens here.
The main problem I have is that there seems to be little reasoning by some on the unintended consequences of a lot of policies. |

More cr.p from the Libs today. There goes the computer to every kid in a school, cut this, cut that, lol, Someone should tell them AUSTRALIA is not in recession. THEY ARE TRYING TO CREATE THE FEELING THAT WE ARE IN RECESSION BY SAYING WE NEED TO CUT THIS AND CUT THAT. I would prefer to be not in recession and return to surplus in 3-5 years.

Yes..well sometimes when you type in an unconsidered way,in the heat of the debate, you can say things that you might not have said after some consideration. That is why you should only take what i have typed as gospel, after i have given due consideration to the topic and have signed it. HMMM.....where have i heard that recently? lol.

For what its worth i'll vote for whatever party spends the least and taxes the least.
Though i find both parties to be a bunch of buffoons id have to say the Libs generally like to cut spending as a way of balancing the budget whilst labour likes to increase taxes. As Winston Churchill so aptly put it - "For a nation to try and tax itself into prosperity is like a man trying to stand in a bucket and lift himself up by the handle" |
|
By:
Looks like it is going back to the old days.
Liberals less tax so helping those that are taxed the most - the wealthy. While less spending disadvantages those who need it. Both a bunch of Gronks. |
|
By:
Liberals less taxing??? Who bought in the GST???
You might want to look at tax as a percentage of GDP |
|
By:
What a joke and rabble the Libs are, first Abbott handpasses the detail of their budget costings to Hockey to present at the National Press Club, then Hockey gets up and gives a rant about the LIB ethos and NO DETAIL about their Budget costings, so he can escape scruitiny in front of all the media at the Press Club. Then Robb gets up and gives a list of cuts that you would swear that we are allready in a recession. Then they try and claim $12 billion of savings by scrapping measures linked to Labor's proposed resource rent tax on the mining sector. The same Tax they are going to dump if they get in. WHAT SAVINGS? If they are going to dump the Tax, it means the money was never there. Talk about fudging the books, must have had Barnaby run his keen eye for figures over that lot. What a joke of a party they
are. lol. |

There are great people in politics. You fanatical supporters of both sides need to take your blinkers off.
TONY Abbott is refusing to criticise his former colleague and loyal supporter Michael Johnson, despite the third-term MP being expelled from his party for impropriety, including the misuse of taxpayer-funded staff and resources. NSW Premier Kristina Keneally is grappling with her first ministerial scandal after Transport Minister David Campbell resigned over claims he used a government car to visit a gay sex club in Sydney. |

I put 600 on the Coalition at 3.25. I'm anticipating I can lock in a trading margin as more and more Aussies discover what a vile creature Kevin Rudd truly is.
The problem with all Governments (especially Labor ones) is that they are addicted to taking more and more of our money through taxes (notice how there's seldom a tax reduction and no such thing as a temporary tax- i.e nearly all taxes are permenent and cannot be reversed). Why then are we told to pay more for electricity, more for water etc because the Government cannot afford to invest in infrastructure?! What have they been doing with our money? I will be glad to see the back of one of the most incompetant and slimy politicians our country has ever known! This is the bloke whose own party hates him, after all he decided it would be better to swan around the hospital with Cate Blanchett instead of attending John Button's funeral (ALP statesman). |

By:
AFL- The Government did not keep Australia out of recession you FOOL!! The mining industry did. By the way, were you aware that Governments actually don't create wealth but tax it and redistribute it. If there's a recession the Government can tax companies and distribute the wealth more evenly but it doesn't create wealth and in Rudd's case he wasted our money to (budget went from $20b surplus to $100+ bil in debt) spend on overpriced crap to avoid a recession that would have been a minor one (if at all). We now have to pay that back which means higher interest and more taxes (or declining ionfrastructure). But you're one of those ignoramuses that thinks Kev pulled us out of recession through spending on pink batts.
I wish we have voluntary voting so that ignoramuses like you would stop electing idiots like Wayne Swan. |
|
By:
Amazing how people can only see one side of an argument. I cant stand this govt but the same people who have criticised them for spending would have done the same if they didnt and we went through tough times like many of the worlds economies. Its almost as bad as the holden V ford arguement.

By:
grew up Labour but fair to say it's easy to spend money - which they did.
they were lucky that they did inherent a great economy and cash stash from the prior two governments both Liberal and Labour - they though hardly spent it wisely imo insulation - school buildings why not fix the Pacific Highway and the hospitals if you have money just to waste |
|
By:
Would of have been better to renovate the abestos ridden old school buildings in some schools, so can see the point about wasted spending.I can cop the spending on schools but would be nice for it to be focused ffs

I am a true swinging voter having voted for Howard twice and Rudd at the last election. That said I believe that Rudd is the worst Prime Minister this country has ever had. Even so I believe he will win the next election and after about 9 to 12 months he will be replaced by Gillard. At that point he will be pensioned off to the UN. It is a great pity that we get to choose between Rudd and Abbott. Who in their right mind could vote for the liberals.

AWWWW, here we go....the troops have arrived,
1melblad25 Joined: 21 May 10 Joined yeterday, and straight to the Politics thread, lol. Labours stimulus package prevented the fall into recession. Ask those ignaramouse's at the IMF. The Libs are goin DOWN, and Abbott and his back to the past shadow front bench can suffer for the crap and lies they foisted on us for too long, and Tony everyman Abbott will lose that arrogant swagger of his and go back to flogging Bibles. Where was the Libs VISION, and their investment in infrastructure? My vote is worth just as much as yours 1melblad. Amazing that the only abuse in this thread, seems to be coming from the LIBS lol. Apart from the abuse toward the politicians of course. But they deserve it lol. Apart from Rudd of course. lol |

i declare i am truly a swinger, i don't like to vote though. The scrutineers always seem to miss my vote for Norman Gunston anyway. We in the fire brigade love labour here in St Albans, never been so many roof fires keeps us pretty busy but not to worry ... our kids secondary school has got a brand new soccer pitch with artificial turf, a 4 lane olympic 400m track, a new aussie rules oval, 2 basketball courts outdoors, a huge new building housing an indoor basketball court and gymnasium, and some sort of miniture tennis court. Keep it up Kevin seven, at least someone loves you !!!!

If you had said to me late last year that Tony Abbott & the Coaltion would be on par with the Rudd Government, I would of laughed you off, big time.
The Abbott leadership aim was primarily to expose & politically damage Rudd as much as possible - the 2010 election was written off months & months ago. But suddenly, the Coalition are neck & neck with the government - and its easy to see why. If you tear away the symbolism, for instance, the Kyoto signing & the Apology/s - and consider that Kevin Rudd & Labor have within 2 years of entering office, turned billions of surplus into billions of debt - you not only have a bottom line that is covered in red ink, but it is clear, Rudd is most certainly a dudd. The argument that he saved us from the Global Financial Crisis is a major MAJOR furfie. John Howard & Peter Costello are the men who saved Australia from the GFC, not amatuers like Kevin Rudd & Wayne Swan. A neatly regulated banking sector & a strong bank balance for the country - plus a few funds for the future. The honey pot was just too much for the Rudd Government, not only did they over-do it, BIG TIME - but we now have thousands of schools across the country with USELESS, FAULTY canteens / school halls - all at great cost - all paid for, by the taxpayer - this stimulus money has stopped YET. |

What an incredible fall from grace for Kevin07 - and he is all to blame - he is like, literally out of the TV series Hollow Men, surely?
The union movement has drudged up the old Workchoices scare campaign which reeks of desperation - the Labor comrades are a little nervous - internal polling from both sides show significant anti-Rudd senitment. And this rushed, bunny out of the bag from Rudd in the super tax on the mining industry is ludicrous - I've never seen such little backbone/conviction and the highly spun populism from a government. The building of mountains out of molehills from the government frontbench last week shows that the Rudd Government is rattled - all diversions away from the hapless, hopeless failings of the government OF THE DAY, that being Rudd Labor. Australians are asking themselves, what does Kevin Rudd stand for? Are we better off? What he has done? What are his plans for the future? The true answers to those questions are dire for Labor. If your a Labor supporter, I think it would be foolish to assume your home in this election, though based on a 50/50 neck & neck two party preferred, I would think the incumbent would fall over the line. No matter the result, Rudd will be disposed. He either flops at the election or wins and is replaced within months - that is for certain. |

Amazing how a Govt can spend money on improving facilities at 1000's of schools, and Chanell 7 seeks out 3 or 4 of the perhaps 1% of disgruntled P&T"s and puts this up as a failed policy. Of course when a Govt undertakes such a programe they are not going to please everyone. The programe served a purpose beyond the assistance to those schools, by providing work to the builders and all the ancillary industries, and helped in stimulating the economy.

Where did you read that AFL. alp.org.au? ![]() The "Nation Building" program was/is over-the-top. Labor being Labor - spend spend spend spend - think about all the details later. Australia was in a strong position courtesy of sound econmic management by the Howard Government, though, we were significantly shelted from the GFC anyway - the downturn (taking stimulus away) was not as Rudd would have you believe. What a joke - Rudd's taking the credit for the 2013 return-to-surplus. ![]() ![]() It's like Rudd being an "economic conservation" - BUT only in election year. ![]() ![]() |

Next set of polls will be interest Jez after the week Abbott and the Liberals had - expect to hear the phrase "Gospel Truth" a lot in the next few days / weeks / months.
The 50 / 50 is misleading anyway - yes Labor is losing a stack of support but it's going the The Greens and Others rather than to the Libs / Nats - obviously people are getting polled and answering neither of those two clowns, and they both are. Labor is home and hosed though, we haven't had a 1 term government in 70 odd years and this one, as bad as it's been at times, doesn't deserve to be the first especially after they avoided the recession by spending when it was desperately needed. We'll never know for sure what would have happened if they didn't open the purse strings when they did but I guarantee there wouldn't be a 5 in front of the unemployment rate like there is now. Anyways - Vote 1 the Australian Sex Party ![]() |
|
By:
Wombleoz.
I agree, based on 50/50 two party preferred, that result would see Labor returned, by a flared nostril. Incumbency is gold. But I wouldn't say Labor are home & hosed - not by a long shot. A day is a long time in politics. We still have 4-6 months to go and the campaign proper. "Gospel truth" will be thrown around, naturally. As will the ridiculous Workchoices campaign. But what about the goverment Wombleoz - the party currently in power - the one's that ought to be accountable including the PM. Yes the Coalition don't have the union movement bank rolling them into power, but there will be a strong campaign against Kevin Rudd from the Coalition. The broken promises, the talk, the total inaction. Pink Batts, ETS scheme, laptops in schools, the stimulus waste...the list goes on & on & on.....don't understand the Australian public, they can cottoned on to the Prime Minister. And bare in mind that Kevin Rudd winning the election in 2007 was breaking history? He re-wrote history in defeating John Howard, with the economy in such a strong position, low interest rates & low unemployment. He again re-write history by becoming the next one-term wonder. I'm confident there will be a swing to the Coalition, it just depends how much it is, and where it occurs. The marginal seats across the nation are actually moving to the Coalition according to polling, not the minor parties. Plus there is great movement in WA & QLD marginals relating to the damaging super tax on mining. A 2.5% swing to the Coalition & they win the election - it is not an impossible fete. |

Another pathetic performance from Julie Bishop and the opposition today, in criticising the Govt's decision
to expel the Israeli Diplomat / SPY? who forged our citizens passports and used those identities to murder some -one in a third country. Just another example of opposing for opposition's sake, from an opposition that are bereft of anything that resembles a positive contribution, and further proof that they do not deserve to govern this country. How would she feel if it was her passport / identity that was stolen/forged? No doubt from this reaction she would have sent a submission to the judge to let them off with a warning. This from a Deputy Opposition Leader who in recent times has firstly accused the Rudd Govt of being too close to China, and then criticized them for allowing Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer into the country last year on the basis that it would upset China. They are a rabble that have not got one positive idea, and truly believe that because they are called the opposition that they must adopt the contrary position to anything the Govt does. Well the people are smarter than that and demand from their oppositions a vision and plan to make the country better, not a never ending stream of negativity, built around trying to paint a picture of doom and gloom. |

Agree AFL. Poor form being critical of that one.Did the interviewer ask what she proposes to do-I didn't see it.
Absolutely no point being critical without a preferred solution. They are a law unto themselves at the moment Israel and the Americans are watching very carefully. |
