Tony Abbott’s Budget Reply outlined a better and more responsible way to manage the Budget, return to surplus and pay off Labor’s debt.
Mr Rudd’s high-taxing, high-spending Budget is a danger to the economy. It confirmed that Mr Rudd no longer stands for anything. By contrast, Australians are in no doubt that the Coalition stands for strong economic management, lower taxes, small government and greater freedom. We stand for a fair go for families and respect for institutions that have stood the test of time. The Coalition will oppose Labor’s great big new mining tax in opposition and rescind it in government. As Tony said in his speech: keep believing Rudd illusions boys.It will make you richer for sure ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

MrBen...no labour voter here mate
As outlined before...the 2 major parties are full of exactly the same. Swinging voter, more often than not like to send them both a msg. But i will say this...I will never vote for Tony Bjelke Petersen He will take this land back to the 1950's with his ultra conservatism..and i'm not talking about his fiscal policies. Vety dangerous man backed by equally dangerous factions wys is not what you get |

Same here PA , im def swinging voter but will admit I vote with the mob who delivers Infrastruture to the nation more so.
My confusion MrBen with what your saying lies with as a example the NBN.How on earth is this not a worthwhile project and why would the Libs and Abbott not support one of the greatest Infrastructure investments to support Australia's competitiveness with the world and for future generations of Aussies. Plenty of evidence that the big end of town screw the general population over when they get a chance. I will say something on the mining tax- Any gov't who lay idle in addressing mining companies who have at least quadrupled the price of a product of a country's natural resource basically overnight ( Iron Ore at spot prices to China for eg) and not contribute more to the nation's finances deserves to be thrown out.The gov't is simply re-aligning the goal posts as the miner's did with their buyers. Look who is squealing now. On a final note: In a previous life I watched employees pay rates go from $ 24 per hr to $ 17 flat rate during work choices contracts and let me tell you , their was no bargaining - just ultamatums - sign or get no shifts. The hard reality of those policies is what got them kicked out and this won't be forgotten by the general population for some time. |

Amazing stuff from Abbott again.... he opposes everything Labour have done, and lo and behold the only labour policy framework they agree with and are not going to change is Labours workplace reforms and the shafting of WORKCHOICES..... lol
|
|
By:
Aussie Punter you don't sound like a swinging voter. More like a Labor voter or unionist.
Dont agree with the Workchoices argument. Employers still screwing employees since it was dumped & many workers benefited from better conditions under it. We just only hear about the ones that got sacked or drops in pay. Further i also dont agree with the infrastucture spending which i think is naive and one dimensional argument. The previous Gov't didnt spend money on infrastructure b/c we had full employment. Any big spending would have been very inflationery and led to a housing boom. If they had spent too much instead of having surpluses then we may well have had a similar recession to the USA/UK. |

Here Here Mrben!
Spot on regarding Budget.Tony Abbott hasn't blown the Coalitions chances - though his ability to be frank in his interviews can create some unwanted interest. It does provide Rudd Labor with a temporary deflection from their performance over the past 3 years. A very desperate response from the government's frontbench today though. They even released the MIA Mr Garrett for the day to make comment - the headkickers are out in force. Speaking of headkickers, one man who has certainly lived up to the Abbott's point of politician's reputation of stretching the truth, our Finance Minister, Lindsay Tanner. He spent last night on the ABC, few hours after the Abbott interview, lying his head off & back-flipping over the superannuation increase. Of course, like as if on cue, fellow comrade, ABC host Tony Jones intervened and saved his bacon. [>o] The incompetence of this government in such a short time is staggering. Also, memo to the Labor Party, 2007 wants the Workchoices scare campaign back! I heard Kevin Rudd saying earlier this year that the public would have to prepare for a massive scare/negative campaign from the Liberal Party? Is he serious? And how's the Union movement enforced Pro-Mining campaign - tell me, what does the ACTU really have to do with mining tax? T ![]() Rudd Labor stands for nothing & it has delivered nothing. Australian's are worse off in 2010, than they were in 2007. Think of the 2007, the fairytale, the hopes, the aspirations of life under Kevin07. Remember the 2020 Summit in Canberra...all those ideas from the best & brightest? And it has let to so much, hasnt it? ![]() ![]() Australians believed, but they have been bitterly disappointed, by a fake & hollow Prime Minister without conviction. Prepare yourself for the formal campaign - this clown we have as PM will do anything & say anything to win the election for Labor & the Unions. Shadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey summed it up in Parliament a few weeks ago - The greatest moral challenge of our time is to defeat this spinning, hapless & hopeless government. |

aussie punter you sound like a dedicated labour voter to me also. The reason abbott is against the broadband network is that because by the time it is finished it will be obsolete by a huge margin.Apparently fibre optic is 500 times faster{ or something like that} and is about 2years off being ready to go.Abbott does'nt want to spend 43 billion on establishing broadband that australia will be stuck with for DECADE AT LEAST WHICH WILL LEAVE THE COUNTRY BEHIND THOSE USING FIBRE OPTIC.He prefers to wait for the vastly superior network.Rudd of course is only interested in short term political gain for votes.
As far as workchoices go the only one talking about it is labour.I think most people see it for what it is- a desperate ploy by labour to scare people. Its so transparent. Face facts- labour is raising taxes and wasting huge aamounts in low benefit spends to gain short term voter attention. The british govt went down this same path "electoral spending" The outgoing finance minister just admitted that country is bankrupt. If china implodes where will our country be under the Rudd high tax high spend strategy? |

whats the point of all this i have yet to read anything on here that is not from a biased political supporter. Thatss the problem with politics if Rudd says we should kill all women aged 48 then labour supporters will go here here and come up with reasons why and same if abbott says no it should be 53 year olds. Politics is such a bore especially in this country because we are basically powerless to influence our economy. Everyone whinges when interest rates go up and how tough it is to get by but we all have our $60 a month i phone, pay TV and drink 3 cups of $ coffee a day. Sure i do too but if I need to whine about it I will stop.

MrBen and Kye: Contary to your belefs I am a swinging voter but as I said will normally go for whatever mob does the most Infrastruture spending.
Their is nothing wrong with debt if managed well - I just don't see the point having a surplus and have structures breaking down around you.For eg: last mining boom if the ports and rail network were upgraded it would of moved greater volumes for the economy.Ships were banked up for months waiting to get loaded. The Libs didn't have the stones to put Costello in over Howard when his time was up , and this is what caused most grief for them.Libs would of gone close to winning with him as he seemed to be the most competent and was well thought of. M Turnball would of made a challenge of it as well , but the ultra-conservative Abbott is no chance. It's Labour's run now until the electorate get sick of them and it goes this way forever and a day. I wasn't effected by the penalty rate fiasco but I will say it is very ordinary to expect people to work Christmas Day for a flat rate with no penalty rates as compensation. The Libs will get their day in the sun again , when they get a decent leader |

you moron wiz! consider the risk, the cost of development and the likely result-less the tax and fortescue clearly considered it unprofitable.Resources are not free to extract, massive amounts are required to get them to production stage and their needs to be a reward for that>Rudd has removed that reward.
Look at it this way. you take a job that requires you yo buy a 30,000 van.You will earn 40,000 probably, depending on how it goes, less 40% tax=24,000.Your van will last 5 yrs so you lose 6,000 off its value after year 1.Your net result is 18,000. But what if you earn just 30k due to risk/competition weather etc?40k is not certain.Less 40% tax less 6k= 12,000. Do you still want to do it? No? Neither do the resource companies. What if you earn 60,000 because your a good operator? That is called a return for your risk.Something Dudd and co refuse to acknowledge. It may interest you to know the canadian resources minister is openly mocking the aust govt for putting on this tax.Canada is our biggest competitor. |

Aussie P you demonstrate a lack of understanding how aussie system works. The infrasture run down to which you refer, and I agree, is owned mostly by state govt. All of which are labour.Federal owned infrastrute ie adminstered by howard govt was not allowed to run down as you imply. The state govt refused to update aging infrastrucre preferring instead to give out big vote buying handouts. Now we have antiquated facitlities and the state govt want dudd to pay for fixing it.Dudd has told them to fk off since they spent the $$$ on other things.
Hence dudd wants to take over the hospital system because even he can see its almost 3rd world in some hospitals.Hospitals are currently state administered. Some roads are federal most are state. Most rail is state. Some ports are federal some are state.Dams are state.etc etc. I live in QLD and anna bligh is selling off everything that is not nailed down to fund what?Spending on short term jollies at the expense of the future.Exactly what the nsw govt did.A state govt that is totally broken. |

AP i agree there is nothing wrong with debt & spending on infrastructure when your economy needs it (like last 18mths) but you missed the point about it causing inflation. Liberals didnt spend b/c Aust had full employment ie everyone had jobs and any big spending would have led to high wages, inflation etc.
Many of the economies that are currently in trouble spent more in those years & had a boom then a big bust. |

For you Mr Ben
Fanaticism is a belief or behavior involving uncritical zeal, particularly for an extreme religious or political cause or in some cases sports, or with an obsessive enthusiasm for a pastime or hobby. Philosopher George Santayana defines fanaticism as "redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim"[1]; according to Winston Churchill, "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject". By either description the fanatic displays very strict standards and little tolerance for contrary ideas or opinions. The behavior of a fan with overwhelming enthusiasm for a given subject is differentiated from the behavior of a fanatic by the fanatic's violation of prevailing social norms. Though the fan's behavior may be judged as odd or eccentric, it does not violate such norms.[2] A fanatic differs from a crank, in that a crank is defined as a person who holds a position or opinion which is so far from the norm as to appear ludicrous and/or provably wrong, such as a belief in widespread alien abduction. In contrast, the subject of the fanatic's obsession may be "normal", such as an interest in religion or politics, except that the scale of the person's involvement, devotion, or obsession with the activity or cause is abnormal or disproportionate. |

From Kris on "Money Morning" on the super tax slug on mining
"If governments decide to take a big slice of those big profits, guess what, where's the incentive for new entrants to enter the market, provide competition, and therefore drive those profits down? By taxing the super profits, or super normal profits, it actually kills several birds with one stone. It punishes the incumbent for making a profit, it reduces their enthusiasm to produce extra, knowing that it will face a higher tax burden, it makes it less attractive for new entrants to come into the market, and finally it puts a handbrake on supply, potentially causing prices to rise..." |

The resources tax is paid by the resources companies not the end consumer. |

Because even the dumbest person realises that at some point tax is destructive. |

So you think no one has given up smoking because of taxes, or that there is no increase in smuggling around the world on **** or that the crime rate has not increased because of the extra taxes. That also more children will go hungry as some parents will cut food spending to pay the extra it now costs. You, like Rudd, are living in La La land. The taxes hurt the poor more than the rich and if you think that the tobacco giants aren't hurting why would they spend so much defending their position. Just another tax grab at the expense of the poor who are either unwilling or haven't the willpower to give up one of their few pleasures in life. Filthy habit, but it is legal. All up the tax take on a packet of **** is over 70% |
