Well i was very keen on Milansbar in the Welsh National and very disappointed with the way he jumped in rear.
New jockey and different tactics saw a proper performance at Warwick winning the same race as Arthur did last year.
Dont know if Bryony will be available to ride in the National but if she is then must have a serious chance off a mark of 143 and 10-02. a raise of 9 pounds is fair enough.
I really like the Milans over extreme distances on the soft

Caroles Destrier looks to have a lot of positives. The Sandown Gold cup win and the Hennessy second are stand out pieces of form regarding this race. It seems the Grand National was very much on the agenda for him last year but he missed it for whatever reason. Be interesting to see how he runs on Wednesday. I am a bit concerned that he is entered in a veterans race but 66/1 looks worth taking a chance on.

Carole's Destrier form in the Hennessy is far and away the best form relative to its weight. I believe it was injured in the Welsh national. It wouldn't concern me running in a veterans race, it's only 10 and an ideal age. Probably going there as the going looks like it will be good and its a flat track. Obviously how it runs will show whether it still retains the ability it showed last season. It's more or less take a chance and bet now and if it runs well you have a great bet but if it bombs out you've already lost your money !!

Have to agree. Made excuses re heavy ground etc in the past but there can't be any for the Doncaster run. Been a spectacular decline really as it didn't look as if it is capable of winning anything now. Makes you wonder why it gets entered in the GN as it must be no better on the gallops unless there is a dramatic turnaround, I wont be banking on it though.

My last straw to clutch is that they are still keeping handicap mark down for Cheltenham/aintree double. Something like the Kim Muir which sunnyhillboy nearly pulled off. It's the only hope to cling to.

I didn't know at the time of writing that he actually has been entered up at Cheltenham. That has given me a bit more hope than what I did previously had. Won't throw it away just yet.

That was a nearly £19000 race at Donny and a lot less competitive than Cheltenham. Worryingly he was never travelling even in the first few furlongs. Wouldn't be surprised to see it scratched from the GN next forfeit stage but as you say that's what straws are for. to be clutched at. Waiting for the next one to bomb out now, Noble Endeavor lol

Seeyouatmidnight is bang up there on my shortlist.
Seeyouatmidnight was also an excellent three-length third in the 2016 Scottish Grand National at Ayr behind the Paul Nicholls-trained Vicente and was set to reappear at Kelso today.

The 10 chases trend is still working as a 10/10 stat 17/19 had run in 10 races over this season and last, which is currently a 9/9 stat (Silver Birch ran in 9 and the other to miss the trend was Comply Or Die). This is a great indicator of fitness. The last three winners had never fallen or unseated in a chase The 'at least 3 runs' during the current season is still a 20/20 stat Won or placed over 26f + is 14/14

Having given those stats however I'm with Mully. If he shows his wellbeing this weekend and is 100% fit on the day of the GN, then Seeyouatmidnight is going to go close. I would also place quite a bit of faith in his jockey now that he has got that Grade 1 monkey off his back. I've always felt Hughes himself didn't feel like he belonged in the top echelons and sometimes rode like that in the big races but hopefully he will have more confidence in himself going forward. Can't do any worse that last year's race!

Will be keeping an eye on seeyouatmidnight tomorrow after the wind surgery. Done really well in Scottish National considering he took a keen hold early on. I have struggled this year to find one who may be well handicapped but also stays and think this could be one. Would like the ground to be soft ideally.
I don't think there any fluke about Anibale Fly either yesterday, yes he was flattered to finish as close to the front two as he did but there was no fluke about beating all the rest as he was fairly prominent the whole way through. Looks as though he'll stay on better ground, don't think he is overly well handicapped but not many are this year.

Anibale Flyer will go up in the handicap so it will be now or never , stayed on strongly but did take a right fall in Ireland the time before. Rathvinden won well but he too has jumping flaws. I thought Tiger Roll would be favourite after his cross country run , don't know which box he does not tick , well weighted , jumps , stays.

You can't really compare X country races with conventional ones. In fact the horse that was 2nd at Cheltenham is no great shakes. I think why people are wary of Tiger Roll is because it was well beaten in last years Irish National and after the race at Cheltenham it was fairly distressed for a while.

I was surprised at that as well 626. Been betting Tiger Roll, few quid every week since last April, and he's the only serious bet I have on the race. I do think he has jumping issues, but not major, and like yourself, ticks plenty of boxes. An extra week to recover from Cheltenham as well is in his favour, as should get the ground in his favour too.
Others I've got bits and pieces on

I would love General Principle or Pairofbrowneyes to get in, but they need it to cut up badly, and will probably head Fairyhouse now.

Sadly another nail in the coffin of the GN thanks to Smith. As it stands just 17lbs between the top weight and bottom weight. A race now dominated by big trainers and owners on their ego trips. Quality much better ? Just look at some of the dross that he has given weights to so as they will be able to run and have their day out.

It is a very uninspiring line up . Wounded Warrior & Thunder And Roses run in almost every staying chase in Ireland The Last Samurai , Ucello , Vieux , Saint Are , Lord Windermere , Cause , Gas Line , Houblon , Pleasant Company , Vicente .....all had their chance wont figure.

The damage has been done in previous years by pandering to big owners by allowing the so-called better horses to carry less than the rating they have to the detriment of the good stayers who contest the other long distance chases. Of the 40 that are guaranteed a run 33% are owned by just 3 owners. A lot of the horses which he tried to attract weren't suited to the race and the prize money is the biggest attraction nowadays anyway.

I think this is one of the least inspiring Nationals I can remember-probably due in part to the reasons highlighted below by Bindaree
Looking at some of the entries it does make you wonder if they are just running to stop others from getting a run and they don't have realistic chances-a comment made by some Irish observers about last year's Irish National
Really struggling to find a shortlist of any substance this year.

Agreed it is a very uninspiring line up ......not exactly 1994 with 3 Gold Cup winners, Whitbread winner , Foxhunter winner , Scottish National winner.
Was any reason given for The Dutchman going from on the bridle to totally going up and down on the spot at Haydock?
I do think the 2 women with rides on Milansbar and Baie Des Iles have a very good chance of creating history in this average field

I think I have a couple with chances but we are still over 3 weeks away and have little indication of the likely ground

I don't think it's a case of "loads of horses with no realistic chance of winning". The problem is with horses such as Go Conquer who Jonjo O'Neill doesn't seem too sure if it will stay. Well if he doesn't know who is supposed to and why waste peoples money finding out if it doesn't. Why didn't he try the horse over an appropriate distance before entering it. He's not the only one. That's the problem with the National nowadays these trainers and owners throw a load of darts at the board and hope one hits the bull !!

1 Minella Rocco - some good form, will stay but very dodgy jumper.
2 blaklion - didn't seem to quite stay last year, higher rating and carrying more weight won't help this time around.
3 anibale fly - career best performance last time, officially 9lb well in after that. Shapes as though will stay, bad fall 2 starts ago but jumped fine either side of that.
4 The last samuri - carrying more weight than when a gallant second two years ago, enjoys the fences but too high in the handicap.
5 valseur lido - well weighted on some old form, not sure he still retains ability and also a doubtful stayer.
Going to go through the whole card 5 at a time, as much as for my benefit as for anyone else but feel free to disagree. Struggling for a strong opinion this year.

Bad rain here in the north west. Hope it's not a bog, being on Blaklion. My other main hope The Last Samuri. Think both could easily go very well indeed!

The ground is obviously a vital factor. My personal preference is to take proven stayers with light weights regardless but if its soft or worse then I just couldn't be considering those carrying 11 soneplus. I adored Many Clouds and consider him an exceptional national winner, bucking all the trends at the time. But despite him having soft ground form he walked home in 16th in 2016 carrying 11st 10.

I like Milansbar, Vintage Clouds and Gas line Boy as although they have soft and heavy form I think they could be competitive on better ground judging on their sires preferences. Raz de maree would also be there on the list but only on soft or worse.

The weather doesn't look very inspiring for the next 16-18 days. Aintree week it's less that 10 degrees and overcast every day. There will be damp and juice in the ground each morning I'd say.
I'm warming to Seeyouatmidnight, Raz De Maree, I Just Know & Milansbar. Would like to see Vintage Clouds get in but I don't think there will be quite enough defectors. Irish National will tell us plenty on Monday.

I really can't see how Seeyouatmidnight can win after it's Newbury run, it surely needs massive improvement in too short a time. Also can you really imagine Milansbar as a National winner, it just hasn't got the form in major races. It would need a lot of non finishers to prevail I think.

Nothing it beat in the Warwick race would ever threaten to win a GN and most probably none of them would even get in the race, plus it's been well beaten twice since.

True , but all these staying chasers have pulled ups and also rans in their list. Milansbar a big horse who will carry no weight and likes to be handy , should go well for a long way at least.

It didn't win the same race as One for Arthur the previous year because it was well beaten by One for Arthur. You can't compare the two, one was an up-and-coming young horse and the other is a veteran who has never reached the same heights.
