Bit of a washout final day, with just the one winner, Catalina with an 11/8 launching him to 18th.
So straight to the medallists and promotees:
And what a champion Billposter turned out to be. A rare example of someone who tops the division every single day. It started with a bangeriffic 16/1 on Day One. People might then have thought 'flash in the pan'. But he continued to trot out the winners when it mattered - a 15/2 mid-month was pretty decisive - and never really looked threatened. A near £16 final bank's not half bad either. A masterclass in leading from the front and knowing when to strike.
Behind him in second is fenderswoop, the nearest challenger all month bar the odd blip. But never quite near enough, despite an 8/1 early doors and fairly regular decent-price winners since. Still, he showed mettle and consistency across the month.
In third is one of my favourites, our numbers man undecided with just three winners all month. The key was the rather fortuitous 28/1 bangerooni three days ago. That's kind of his style though; happy to be a basement dweller until the big one turns up.
In fourth is Roland with a respectable strike rate that maybe should have yielded more. His top score of 8/1 in the second week showed a promise that was never quite fulfilled. Still he's in profit and promotion is promotion.
Which leaves adamanty in fifth, also in profit and the consistency king of August. Six winners across the month , the highest tally of the top five. That 33% strike rate speaks to reliable, workmanlike selection. But it also suggests that winning half the time isn't enough if the winners are skinny.
Shout out to Caro Kann for his 56% strike rate: won more than half his races, but the prices weren't enough. It was the same story for Darley Abbey (52%) and our special friend Even Steven (48%). A cautionary tale about odds-on winners.
Still, nine in profit for the month aint too bad. Hard luck to everyone else but many thanks for making it a full-blooded competition. Hope you'llall be back fresh for a sizzling September. And thanks for all your kind messages.
