Top tipster today was Andrew.in.Sweden delivering a 7/4 shot.
Next best was Aquarius notching a 13/8 first place. Another worthy winner was Rambling Bear with an 11/8 winner. Just missing out on a 20/1 shot by a neck was Levy. Unlucky mate. And another hitting the post was Draw1 with a good price effort. soldieroffortune(6) maintains his unbeaten run Well done all winners. Good luck tomorrow. |

Can I ask a question re the settling calculations. Yesterday there were 2 winners at 11/8 and 13/8. The actual arithmentic calculations are £1.375 and £1.625. However the £1.375 has been rounded up to £1.38 but the 13/8 was rounded down to £1.62. I have no great view as to whether the rounding should be up or down but I think it should at least be consistent.

I have no great view as to whether the rounding should be up or down but I think it should at least be consistent. Our calculations are done automatically within a spreadsheet by VBA code. The VBA round function always rounds .005 so that the last digit is even. So half the time it rounds up and half the time it rounds down. .125 rounds down and becomes .12 .385 rounds down and becomes .38 .135 rounds up to become .14 .375 rounds up to become .38 |

Thanks for replying Imlac
So no consistency or logic applies, just "the computer says" So effectively 11/8 gets rounded up, 13/8 gets rounded down and 15/8 gets rounded up, 85/40 would be rounded down etc I don't think that .135 or .385 are figures you are ever going to encounter. I appreciate that it is only a competition and probsbly any 1p is unlikley to make any difference to any placings and if you are running the competition you are entitled to make the rules and do the calculations as you see fit, but I think 1/2p should always be rounded up although if it was always rounded down I wouldn't think thst unfair but I dont think the way it is being computed at the moment is fair, although as I have said it will probably almost never make any difference to the overall results. Sorry to be a pain and thanks again for all the work you and your dellow settlers put into running the competitions |

Aquarius, I think the reasoning is that if you are doing statistical analysis then rounding the VBA way will make averages very slightly more accurate than rounding .005 up all the time. Although having said that, Excel will always round .5 up for some reason. It's pretty easy to change, and if there's no strong objections then I can change the code to always round half pennies up.

Must admit that until Aquarius pointed it out I thought the half-points were rounded up.
We used to always do that when we had to settle manually. |
