Lester Piggott

Lester Piggott

You won your first Derby
On ‘Never Say Die’
The new ‘Wonder Boy’
Catching the eye

Not long after that
Came success with ‘Crepello’
A jockey walking tall
Nicknamed ‘The Long Fellow’

With three lengths to spare
You steered ‘St Paddy’
Around Epsom Downs
You were ‘the Daddy’

You looked beaten on ‘Sir Ivor’
The experts selection
But you timed your run well
A split-second perfection

The French they sent over
A few classy types
But on the brilliant ‘Nijinsky’
You destroyed all the hype

By a flared nostril you got up
To beat Rheingold on the line
Beneath you ‘Roberto’
Jaw-dropping sublime

On the French trained ‘Empery’
My tenner was on
You hacked up with ease
At a nice Ten-to-One

Next, you opted for “The Minstrel”
Despite it’s Guineas flop
It looked like Carson on Hot Grove
‘Till you pulled out all the stops

‘Teenoso’ was a great ride
You traveled with ease
You kicked early for home
And won in a breeze

Throw in all the British classics
The Leger, Guineas and Oaks
Thirty champagne celebrations
With a puff of cigar smoke

Thanks Lester Piggott
Your legend won’t cease
The king of the saddle
Maestro .....rest in peace
