A suggestion for perusal by the competitors as an alternative way of scoring for next season!

SP, 33/1 or 40/1 - 5 times

SP, 50/1 or 66/1 or 80/1 - 6 times

SP, 100/1 or Greater - 8 times

Personally, I never put selections up at those prices, but I do feel that competitors who do, are not justly rewarded!

Just a suggestion though and I'll respect whatever is decided upon!

Personally I wouldn't mind a bit more elasticity in the scoring structure to reward those who select winners 33/1 and above. At the other end of the scale I would get rid of the rule that halves points scored for evens and odds on shots in order to reduce the amount of gaming of the points system that goes on (ie most people are on the second or third fav as they represent a bet to nothing).

I have to agree with Stewarts that changing the scoring would be an improvement. Personally I think 10 x SP a winner and 3 X SP an industry place (no differentiation between 2nd and 3rd) would be optimal and fairest. That’s not a moan btw, i’m grateful and will continue to play (forum bans notwithstanding Mischief) just feel that while the current scoring has a certain charm it does act as a great leveller by massively favouring short price picks.

It is drastic comparatively speaking but it is perfectly “neutral” (fav longshot bias notwithstanding) as it doesn’t favour any particular price band and is tied to a multiplier of SP. You could further simplify it in terms of 1xSP a winner and 0.3xSP a place. Adding the zero in my initial example just makes it easier to compute.

The major problem with the current scoring is that big price picks are massively underscored eg a  100/1 SP worth 20/1+ a place ISP or betfair would be awarded 4 points for placing 3rd.

So, 4 points for a 20/1+ winner and 7 points for an 11/10 winner. That’s the main problem.

Thanks for retrieving the comments, lux.
I suppose we could use standard EW terms for the places under your suggestion, so third place wouldn't count in a seven runner race, but 4th place would in a 16 runner handicap (I think they do still have the odd one at Lingfield).

And perhaps adjust the place multiplication depending on quarter or fifth the odds standard terms.

I do the telegraph predictor and their points are 1st 100 2nd 50 3rd 25 that would equate to 10 5 2.5 and no reduction for odds on and points for sp are

SP below 5/1 scores x1

SP between 5/1 and 9/1 will double your score

SP between 10/1 and 19/1 will treble your score

SP 20/1+ will quadruple your score

It used to be the rule in this competition that odds-on shots could not be napped. Which could be considered if allowing no reduction in points. But I dropped that rule as I thought it was ridiculous saying: if that 5-4 shot goes off 10-11 then the nap won't count and it will be switched to whatever the rule was.

Actually, iirc, if was you couldn't nap a horse if it was odds-on in the RP forecast. Which had obvious flaws.
