Half your stake, not odds.

This is how I`ve always settled dead heats. A bookie as I`ve just checked would return you £3.00 for that bet.

So when you think about it I have to take the £1.00 back as per all selections that win. I know only half stake went on but no-one knows what will d/h before the race if you follow. The comp rules are £1.00

So the £3.00 you would get back from the bookie £1.00 was your original stake, is that clearer?

A  5/1 dead heat  =  a 2/1 winner. £1 staked = £3 returned or £2 profit.

If it is 5/1, you take the difference which is 4, divided by twice the denominator of 1 which is 2. 4/2 = 2/1. Simples!

Good fun when an odds on favourite dead heats and you ended with negative odds...

£1 on a 5/1 dh

50p*5=2.50+50p=£3 return

Overall profit £3-£1=£2
