Segal put up Imperial Commander Ante Post the year he won it. Controversially put up Lord Windermere on Pricewise Extra last year. Synchronised was put up on the day he won and Cool Dawn for Mel Collier back in the 90s.
So what are your thoughts? Where do you think the value lies at the moment? If you were Pricewise what's your tip? 1pt win or 1pt each way accepted. NR no bet accepted just state horse best price what type of bet No more selections after Mon 6pm 12/01.
Wouldn't surprise me if he went with Al Ferof, or Menorah, given past form, but my call has to be
Many Clouds 16/1 (almost everywhere)
Improving horse, from a decent yard, won the Hennessy nicely. only concern would be the 2 less than inspiring runs at Cheltenham in the past, but may well be a better horse now, than then

Unlike the Kempton showpiece on Boxing Day the Gold Cup is often won by the best stayer rather than the best horse. It's a unique test which so many top class 3 milers fail as they don't stay the extra 2.5f up the hill.
I've no doubt that the favourite is the best horse in the race but the big problem is that he has failed twice in the race when well fancied. I get the feeling he is better on a flat track and at the price is easy to swerve. Dynaste , Cue Card and Champagne Fever all have it to prove over the trip while Bobs Worth looks on the decline and Holywell is a dodgy jumper who is at a stable bang out of form.
Of the up and coming brigade Many Clouds still has it prove at Cheltenham and looks like he prefers Softer ground than is likely , Shutthefrontdoor looks more of a National horse and Smad Place had too many runs over hurdles for my liking. Road To Riches is very interesting but 10/1 is a bit skinny for a horse that lacks Festival form.
That leaves me to look at last years race. On His Own is probably a year too old now and SC and BW have already been dismissed so that leaves Lord Windermere and The Giant Bolster. The latter has finished in the first 4 in this race the last 3 years and could place again but I just can't see him winning so it has to be Lord Windermere.
You can forget about the runs so far this season as he is being trained with one race in mind. Has been brought to a peak at the Festival the last 2 years after some indifferent form , particularly last year , and could be now at its peak as a 9yo.

Good write up, china. If I were Segal, I'd be worried about my job with you around
Here's my feeble effort
Sam Winner 1pt EW @ 33-1, in places
Bit speculative this, particularly as he probably lacks the requisite class, the trainer has bigger guns to fire, and reading the quotes he may not even run as the National has been given as his main target.
However, he seems better than ever this season as reflected by his official rating of 160, and a good run in the Lexus the other day suggests it's not impossible he could nick a place at a course he goes well at.
There is slight query over his stamina at the highest level, despite having won over 3m3f in lesser company, but on better ground he should stay well enough, particularly if ridden with a tad more restraint than he was in Ireland?

I know your a flat man George so fair play to you for putting in your selections and the proof is in the results not the write up. You seem to like the Nicholls stable which is no bad thing the form they are in.

Comes from last years RSA with a fair run in the Hennessey. I don't like to put up horses that have run in a previous Gold Cup. I think Silvianiaco Conti would beat these at Kempton but not here at 3-1. I get the Lord Windermere angle and he should go well.

Wouldn't surprise me if Tom puts up Smad Place as sure he is a fan of this horse and ticks nearly all the boxes. I almost put it up as well and only ruled it out as I think it spent too long over hurdles , most top class chasers go over fences very quickly.

I think HE might go for Shutthefrontdoor...my own choices early on were Don Cossack (unlikely now) and Many Clouds who I'm happy to stay with.As a previous winner you've got to respect Lord Windermere but to be a dual winner you usually need to be exceptional, which he might yet turn out to be.I remember Monksfield coming alive at Champion Hurdle time so LW could be the same.MANY CLOUDS e/w for me though, trained by the man who rode the first Cheltenham winner I ever backed---Venture to Cognac..Sun Alliance Hurdle. This type of thread fair whets the appetite for March, though.Great stuff.
