Champions League Tipster Competition 2013
This is a one-off, Horse Race tipping competition, in the style of the football champions league.
The aim is to get 128 players involved, but we'll see what numbers we get and work from there. If it looks like we'll only get around 64 then I will probably cap it there and we'll start later, missing out the first stage.
If we do get over 64 taking part then the competition will commence 9th September for 15 weeks, ending on 21st December.
If no more than 64 take part then we'll start a week later 16th September, for 12 weeks, ending on 7th December.
Players will be drawn into groups of 4, and each player will play each other once. Each match lasts one week, during which you only make one selection.
For each player that's 3 matches, 3 selections, over 3 weeks per group stage.
Depending on numbers I plan 5 group stages, see the rules section for details.
As it's matchplay, the main thing is to beat your opponents, not who gets the best P/L figures at the end. There is however a bonus point for selecting an Evens and above winner, irrespective of win lose or draw the match, and one more bonus point for best winner in the group. P/L figure may play a part at the end in the case of a tie on pts.
Start is penciled in for Monday 9th September but keep an eye out for a firm date.
If you are interested in joining in, PLEASE I BEG YOU to read the rules thoroughly, and be prepared to take part once a week for 15 weeks between September and Christmas, if good enough of-course! (see holiday cover). There is also a thread where we had a trial run of a group stage, you may wish to have a look through it to get acquainted with how it works although bear in mind we have tweaked the rules a bit since then, basically the same though.

This is how one of the groups looked like at the end of our trial run, I'd be happy to explain the bits and bobs if it's not crystal. The only difference now is that china would have had an extra bonus point for getting the best priced winner overall.

I would hope multiple forum name users will respectfully only enter once, I know one or two, if someone else sees that the same person has entered twice then please bring it to my attention either here or PM.

I can't see us making 128 entries, by the start date next Monday. Maybe if I was to recruit on HR and or Ante-post, but as it happens I'd say 64 is enough.
It means I can push the start date back to the 16th which suits me as I'm going to be busy next week.

64 looks the more likely ud. At present 128 looks impossible.

The draw will be next weekend, perhaps Friday evening, I'm busy that Saturday so if not Friday then Sunday.
My plan for the draw is this:
I will draw up a list of numbers corresponding to group number and position in group (decides who plays who first) as follows - 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1.....
I will randomize this list in excel.
I will ask a volunteer to copy the player list and randomize it also.
We will then post these random sorted lists on here at an agreed exact time.
The first player on the random player list will slot into the corresponding first group and position number from my random list.
I don't intend to seed players.

Is it a disadvantage to post first in your match, if it loses the other guy sticks in a long odds on shot later in the week
It would appear so duffy, but in the trial run few of us for whatever reason actually played the waiting game.
The advantage of looking during the week, at leisure, being able to see the market right up to the off, not the mention being able to exert pressure with a decent winner can even things out.

Do you think the saturday selecting will greatly outweigh the earlier in the week, because I'll probably wait for saturdays with it being the best day and all usually, but wouldn't want to look like I'm waiting for the other guy to go first
I've been thinking about this situation myself. I will have to overcome my urge to post as soon as I see one I fancy. It's not about LSP it's about beating you're opponent. I will need to adopt a totally different mindset for this competition.

Regards la mallatiere & shane, I'm making an exception as they are trusted long standing forumites, and I will be seeding them to keep them apart.
I've allowed for holidays in the rules, players will be able to nominate someone to post on their behalf as long as it's pre-arranged and ok'd by me.

Regards la mallatiere & shane, I'm making an exception as they are trusted long standing forumites, and I will be seeding them to keep them apart.
I've allowed for holidays in the rules, players will be able to nominate someone to post on their behalf as long as it's pre-arranged and ok'd by me.
