So making an effort to join in the competition and post Last Race Fav 30 secs too late was punished,
but not bothering with the competition would have resulted in a nice winner of exactly the same horse

A competition needs rules, and the current rules were arrived at after a considerable amount of debate by all who made the effort to give their input. And, under the rules, once you post, the LRF option ceases to apply under any circumstances. The rule is there for people who are unable to post for one reason or another, although inevitably it also applies to those who simply don't want to. But once someone posts, even if it's just to slag off a settler or two, it is clear they are able to post a selection that day and therefore should do so, all the while watching out for the 1-hour rule.

You make a couple of interesting points there Reg.

I think it was while I was covering for Shane last week that someone posted a selection on behalf of another player but failed to post one for himself. I wondered then about the LRF default in such circumstances where clearly the player had been able to post, but didn't.

And I take your point about the 1-hr Rule. If someone breaks it and there are subsequent races to select from then obviously the player is in a position to select. Slightly different in Poppydog's case though isn't it? He just missed the 1hr deadline for the last race and was therefore not in a position to select from any subsequent races. A case could certainly be made there for defaulting to the LRF, I would have thought.

In fact, it could be argued that once the 1-hr marker for the last race had been passed, Poppydog was already automatically on the LRF, and therefore any subsequent post by him was meaningless.
Report Poppydog. August 3, 2013 3:35 PM BST
Thanks for the post, MoMM.

It's up to Weaver Fish though and the -£1 seems fair enough.
Just feel like a fool, borrowing someones phone down the beach, to post a selection last night,
and watching the secs tick by, and missing it by a fraction.

It's up to me to know it wasn't all necessary.

So MoMM, if I post for something in the 8.00 at 7.01 that is invalid, but if I post something for the 9.00 last race at 8.01 that can revert to LRF?
Report Reged August 3, 2013 3:52 PM BST
I think your last line is rather the point Poppydog. Must admit, I couldnt fathom why you'd posted that since it was going to be the case anyway
Report man of many moods August 3, 2013 4:01 PM BST
You're looking at it the wrong way Reg. 'revert' is the wrong word to use.

If the last race is at 9pm then every player in the Division who hasn't selected by 8pm has 'No Selection' for the day.
After 8pm there are no more races he can choose from, so under the current Rules his 'No Selection' automatically defaults to the LRF.
So any subsequent posts after 8pm (even 8.01!) are quite superfluous and should simply be ignored.

In the example you quoted a player selecting at 7.01 for an 8.00 race still has the opportunity to select again so of course that would be invalid.

That's the way I see it anyway.
Report man of many moods August 3, 2013 4:09 PM BST
I'm curious about the other point you raised though.

If a player posts a comment on the thread and then subsequently fails to post a selection, does that mean he's ineligible to default to the LRF?
Report Poppydog. August 3, 2013 4:10 PM BST
You're then getting into the realms of:

Does the Day's Competition officially finish at 8:01pm or when the Day's Racing actually finishes 9pm

It's an interesting debate.
Today's 6/1 winner has cheered me up though (even with the dampner it was 11/1 this morning)
So, I'll stay out of it.

You should know the rules can't be argued with

....or on the Your Competitions Forum or anywhere on the Betfair Forum as a whole....?

LOL

Report Reged August 3, 2013 4:15 PM BST
I profoundly disagree with that MoMM. I think that anything posted while the racing day is 'live' has to be counted, and that means right up to the off of the last race. Otherwise you are saying 'heaven help anyone who posts a minute late, except if its the last race when we'll let you off'. That is in my view unfair on those who post for earlier races.
Report Poppydog. August 3, 2013 4:16 PM BST
Nonetheless, the important question is whether Bell or Pietersen will get Centuries and who'll be first?
Report Reged August 3, 2013 4:19 PM BST
Well Poppydog you make a point there, but I we can't monitor everything! This is a bit of a debating area TBH but for my part I would say that if you post anything on the forum, even if its just a joke, that means you are able to make a selection and thus should do so, because that is the point of the comp - a selection a day.
Report Poppydog. August 3, 2013 4:20 PM BST
Damn, Australia wicket
Report Poppydog. August 3, 2013 4:25 PM BST
While your both around, confirm this please, because I always wonder?

I post a selection at exactly , say, 3:30pm for the 4:30pm race

I realise 3:29pm is fine and 3:31pm is disqualified,
but is exactly 1 hour (at 3:30pm) always within the rules?

Thanks
Report man of many moods August 3, 2013 4:31 PM BST
Yes it is Poppy.

I realise that once the actual hour marker appears then theoretically the 1-hr countdown has begun, but it's always been allowed for as long as I've been taking part in the comp.

So in that respect it does in fact give you 1 minute's grace.
Report man of many moods August 3, 2013 4:36 PM BST
You're still looking at wrong Reg. You wouldn't be letting anyone off.

Quite simply, after the 1-hr marker has passed for the last race then there are no more eligible races left to select from. So how can anyone make an invalid selection? It's not possible. They're already on the LRF!
Report Reged August 3, 2013 4:41 PM BST
No MoMM they are not on LRF because that only kicks in at the time the last race is off and all other eventualities have been taken into consideration. Whether there are elligible races left is irrelevant. If someone has posted and made a mistake, that is just as valid an error in the last race as the first. People posting late for the last race are making exactly the same error as people posting late for the first and should be treated the same. Otherwise its one law for the late, another law for the really late!
Report Reged August 3, 2013 4:46 PM BST
Course one way round all that would be the reverse and say anyone who posts an invalid selection goes to LRF, which would end the penalty culture!

Quite right Reg, you make a good point. I see no reason to change anything and Weaver made a good call deducting £1. I`d have been guided by the rules.
Report man of many moods August 3, 2013 7:02 PM BST
I disagree even more profoundly than Reg.

There is a law in the UK which prevents casinos from accepting roulette bets of even stakes on two opposing even money chances. i.e. you can't put 100 on Black and 100 on Red because you can't possibly win. You can only break even, or lose if 0 comes up. It's a good law because it protects the punter from unscrupulous casinos.

But Poppydog couldn't even break even once the 1hr marker for the last race had passed. According to your rules, by posting he could only lose. And there is no argument that anyone can possibly come up with which would make that fair.

Course one way round all that would be the reverse and say anyone who posts an invalid selection goes to LRF, which would end the penalty culture!

That actually makes some sort of sense. Certainly more sense than the previous paragraph! Happy

The LRF is a default for all 'No Selection' which would previously have carried a penalty of -1.
By extension, an 'Invalid Selection', which also carries a penalty of -1, is tantamount to a 'No Selection'. If it's Invalid, you haven't got a selection!

So Reg's idea is certainly worth considering by the Troika in my opinion.
Report Shanelee1966 August 3, 2013 7:55 PM BST

I see no reason why we shouldn`t incorporate this idea into the rules. I would like to see the maximum of 10 instructions/LRF reduced to something in the region 6/7 or 8.

MoMM, this is not a casino - there's supposedly some skill involved here - the comparison is wrong.

Here it is perfectly fair because PD has been unable to follow the 1-hour rule and posted late. He is just as guilty as if he had been posting for an earlier race. Whether he could break even or not by reposting is immaterial.
Report Reged August 3, 2013 8:47 PM BST
And, to clarify, LRF is not a default for all 'no selection'. As the rules clearly state, LRF is an option purely for those who do not post. That is not the same.
