Early thoughts are that its a big advantage to post second. Some kind of incentive given to post first is needed. My suggestion would be a bonus point for posting first if you selection ends up being a bigger price than your opponents selection.

I'm taking both your posts on board, I'm actually quite surprised, albeit it's only a trial, that most have played early. I did think that posting 2nd is an advantage, and hence the 1st race cut-off on Saturday so that you can't see your opponents result. Saying that, there may not be all that many "good things" to go at on the last day, especially as there is less racing towards winter.

Anyway thanks for the comments, that's why I'm running this trial.

This was my thoughts , similar but not the same as above.

above evens win -  3 pts
above evens loser - 1 pt
below evens winner - 1 pt
below evens loser - 0 pt

i.e. if you bet below evens and your opponent does not , the best you can get is a draw.
i.e. if both of you bet above evens or both below , either player can win.

It also means if you bet close to evens  , you may miss out if it tips into odds on .

Ans as for people who pick 1/3 shots ........and they lose ....... Grin

I would like to ensure that the main pts are gained from beating your opponent, that's why it's A v B and not just 4 in a group.
I quite like china's suggestion although it would lessen the chance of a draw, and it's complicating things slightly.
Let's see how the next two weeks pan out.

Just posting some notes:

Once you post a selection, you won't be able to change it, unless it's a duplicate or non-runner.
You won't be able to leave reserves.
If there is a tie on pts and P/L and no-one missed a selection, then the next tie-breaker would be who had the bigger odds selections.
Just UK & Ireland races to select from.

There's only one long odds on shot today, a 2/9 shot at DR, which I am not going for because I reckon with everyone else in my group picking a loser, I can afford to go for the Evens bonus.

The one possible flaw I can see is you'll no doubt get people who pick winners who get 0 pts and matches where neither will pick a winner but both will pick up 1 pt!! I suppose the chance of either is there for everyone though!!

Possible match scenarios:
Player A picks a winner under evens and Player B picks a loser - Player A gets 2pts, Player B gets 0pts.
Player A picks a winner evens or over and Player B picks a winner under evens - Player A gets 3pts, Player B gets 0pts.
Player A picks a winner evens or over and Player B picks a winner evens or over but a lesser price than Player A - Player A gets 3pts, Player B gets 1pt.
Player A picks a winner evens or over and Player B picks a winner of identical price - Player A gets 2pts, Player B gets 2pts.
Player A picks a loser and Player B picks a loser, or both pick identical winners below Evens - Player A gets 1pt, Player B gets 1pt.

Or am I reading it wrong lol?

I did mean it like that DeSSie, because I want to emphasize the "match" aspect, your number one aim is to do better than your opponent that week, not compared to the whole group, otherwise it would just be a mini naps league.

In my humble opinion having read through the whole thing its a pity that pts staging for SPs isn't there to encourage some open matches. eg 10/1 up 5 pts, 6/1 up to 9s 4 pts, 7/2 to 6s 3 pts etc etc.

I dont look for 5/4 6/4 shots and I'm sure a lot of others dont either. But I'll happily take one on if I know the reward for a 6/1 winner is going to be enhanced. Salmon will love this comp Laugh

Yes it has crossed my mind that the comp format would deter those like yourself averse to the shorties, not done it on purpose I assure you Laugh but again, I wanted an AvB format, keeping it simple, and there's just no getting away from win only shorties as I see it.
That said, I have tried to encourage the higher prices with the bonus point and I'll consider taking that further.
