Some old favourites turn out in the Betfred Monet's Garden Old Roan Chase at Aintree in an excellent renewal with the soggy autumn meaning numbers have swelled compared to past renewals.
Kauto Star was a past winner of the race in 2006 and champion trainer Paul Nicholls relies on the lightly-raced and progressive Pacha Du Polder with Daryl Jacob on board.
He was last seen at Ayr in the spring duffing up a field of novices and as much as this really good chasing type is going in the right direction , he will have his work cut out as a five-year-old against some hardy veterans.
He and Nicky Henderson's Giorgio Quercus both get plenty of weight and the latter could also have more to offer on his comeback.
His form to date would not be quite up to this but Henderson showed last week with Nadiya De La Vega at Cheltenham that he has his entries ready to hit the ground running for these bigger early-season events.
Gauvain is a fascinating new recruit for the Philip Hobbs team but it is his stablemate Wishfull Thinking who appeals most in terms of a price angle.
The nine-year-old failed to get his head in front last season after a victory at the Punchestown Festival but put up some really solid efforts in very decent company over two miles.
He brought the curtain down on his campaign at Sandown in April where he was slammed by the hugely impressive Sanctuaire - again over the minimum distance - and ran like a horse who had had enough for the time being.
Hobbs has said he is very pleased with how he has been going in the build-up and back over his favoured two-and-a-half miles on a track where he has already shown winning form, he gets the nod with Richard Johnson staying loyal to him ahead of Gauvain.
The strapping son of Alflora is a very sound jumper and his early wayward tendencies from the front seem to have been harnessed successfully - I can see him defying his big weight here before making the small leap to the top table of chasers with a crack at the King George over Christmas not out of the equation.
Irish raider Noble Prince could well play a part if straight enough for Paul Nolan, although the trainer has raised a slight concern that the sharp narure of the track could get him on the backfoot early.
