Please type your selections EXACTLY the way they appear on the table i.e.

Ghurair - 2.35 Good (or Goodwood)

It makes it much easier for me to simply copy and paste selections to the spreadsheet without having to edit them.
Many thanks to those of you who always cooperate by typing them this way.

Morning MOMM,

Everyone knows that table settling is time consuming at the end of every day. You do a brilliant job and the write ups you do are exceptional. If you resign as a result of you feeling angry and under appreciated by a few players, I will also resign from the competition with immediate effect as I have nothing but positivr things to say about you. I hope you reconsider your decision mate and as you can see from this thread, a lot of people appreciate your work.

Dundonnell - 6.30 Lingfield.

Many thanks as always.

Ignore it - it's the sort of behaviour you expect from Div 1 rejects

Keep up the good work. This Div is by far the best. Perhaps that's why Stealthgun & I have been here so long - WE LIKE IT HERE

Try, have a look in yesterdays thread about the capitals. It gives the settlers more work to do if they have to retype the selections without them. BTW, I have backed that horse at Galway so its got feck all chance now. Laugh

I suspect one prob is that some pple simply pull up the thread, make their post and quit without reading anything else, and then don't return to see follow-ups. Once someone posted for a race I hd just announced abandoned a few posts before. Go figure

curious that the other divisions can cope without the Div 2 rools...............
By:

Each div has its own minor rules and ways of doing things. Whether we cope any better, or simply bite our tongues, is another thing. I know that the way I gather posts would benefit immensely in time terms from people spelling the horse's name right, but have figured (for NOW Devil!) there's probably more chance of hell freezing over. But surely that is not the point. MoMM is your settler, he puts time and effort into it for no reward, does a great job, and is surely entitled to the courtesy and respect of people following his (pretty simple) instructions. If he was asking you to do the posts in Arabic (Medina dialect) I could understand a certain frisson of unhappiness. But what he's asking is pretty bloody simple and for people to refuse to do it strikes me as taking the p1ss IMVHO.

Settling the table every day is a time-consuming business. I don't get paid for it. It's not a lot of time, but it is time given up out of my day, every day.
I don't mind. Happy to do it. If I wasn't, I wouldn't do it. But my time is valuable to me, so expecting a little consideration and cooperation from players to help reduce that time is not unreasonable.

There are basically two stages to settling the table. The first is to enter all the selections into a spreadsheet. The second is to look up all the results and enter them on the spreadsheet.
There's no way to save any time with looking up the results. The more meetings there are, the longer it takes. There are no shortcuts.
But time can definitely be saved with entering the selections if everyone types them out exactly as they appear on the table. That is a huge help.

Every settler has their own way of producing the table, but they all have one thing in common. The tables look neat and uniform, with all the selections displayed exactly the same way.
I know that Shane for example retypes every selecton by hand in the Premier, which must be a very laborious task.
I don't know what Reged does in Div 3 but every selection is displayed the same way. When you look at the completely haphazard way in which the selections are posted, it must take him ages to either edit or retype 36 of them every day. A nightmare!

The way I do it is very fast. Highlight the selection / copy / Alt-tab to switch to the spreadsheet / paste special  + unicode text. Job done. A few seconds.
Doing 30 of them takes very little time and theoretically I should then be able to move straight on to looking up the results.
But I can't. I never can. In the 16 months that I've been doing the settling, not once have I ever been able to move straight on to the next stage. I have to go through them all, one by one, and make all the necessary alterations so that they all look uniform. Most of them are very minor changes. Others take a bit longer. But there are usually at least half of them that need something doing to them. Yesterday was a good day; there were only eight that needed editing.

But even that is eight more than there needs to be. However, I accept that there will always be a few typos etc and I don't mind that. What I do mind is players blatantly disregarding my polite requests to cooperate by making my task easier. I make these requests every month. And every month there are always a handful of players who totally ignore me. Why they do this is beyond me. I can see no reason for it other than complete selfishness and a total lack of respect for me. And that really annoys me. As Reged rightly says, it's taking the piss.

It's not like it's a difficult habit to get into. You type the horse's name using capitals for the first letter of each word. Then you type space dash space. Then the time of the race with the hour and the minutes separated by a dot. Then a space followed the name of the meeting, once again capitalising the first letter(s). Is that really expecting too much? It would appear to be beyond the capability of some.

But it's not a Rule, and it never will be. That would be a bit draconian for what is after all just a silly competition amongst friends. I don't have to do the settling, and if I don't like it I can resign. Which is what I did after mini me clearly thought my request was unreasonable. I'm more than happy to let him take over the settling if he thinks he can do a better job. I shall be giving up soon anyway and taking on the role of Settler Without Portfolio as a stand-in whenever needed. It's already been discussed. So I was merely rehearsing my resignation speech. Do you think it was a bit top heavy?

Anyway, thank you all for your positive replies and I apologise if it might seem like I was over-reacting; it was more a case of straws and camels than anything else. The refusal of a few selfish players to cooperate has always been a constant source of irritation for me.

I particularly liked Binoculars' suggestion that anyone who doesn't post their selection exactly as it appears on the table should be made an Invalid Selection.
A splendid idea and one I've often contemplated. Unfortunately, Binoculars himself would have fallen foul of it immediately as he posted:

Izzi Top 315 Goodwood

instead of

Izzi Top - 3.15 Goodwood

So that made me chuckle. Laugh
