After the first month or so its apparent that its not always the best option to select the winner of the big race as the points given for placed horses far out weighs the points given for selecting the winner.
a bigger margin for backing the winner of these BIG RACES should be employed, with the emphisis on skill rather than picking a lively outsider beaten out of sight but still picking up more points than the skill of the man backing the winner. example 1st 6/1 x 10 x2pt =120 2nd 11/1 x 5x 2pt =110 3rd 33/1 x 3 x 2pt =198 Any thoughts UD |

And yes i would of selected poqulin for todays race but with the weight of money the horse was always going to start a lot shorter than Razor Royale so i selected the horse which was going to get me a larger amount of points even though it did not win!!!

Thanks for the comments, I certainly welcome such feedback, I try and go with what I think is best then if no-one shouts up I assume it's ok.
What do others think? As for today's scores I'm a bit short of time so it may be tomorrow before I get around to doing the table. |

scoring system fine, just need to relax the 30 min rule to 25 imo ;)

I think giving points down to 5th place is wrong!
running side by side with the official bookmaker payout terms (3rd/4th place) and giving a bigger win bonus(you cant get 1/2 the payout terms for finishing 2nd or a 1/3 for finishing third and so on...as you end up rewarding mediocrity!!! and i am a great believer that 2nd is knowhere maybe 1st price x10 x pt 2nd price x 2 x pt 3rd price x1 x pt 4th price x 1 x pt this puts a litte more emphisis on backing the winner... just a thought...what u think.... |

UD - Regarding the scoring system and the point raised by Scoop.
After 6 races of this compy most of the winners have been well fancied and in single figures i think . I'm sure as we go on there will be some big price winners to outweigh the big priced placed horses and so therefore i think the scoring system is fine as it is .cc . |
|
By:
But surely custard its about picking the winner irrespective of the price?
you can only pick one horse to win a race...rather than have a stab in the dark with an outsider just because it a bigger price...? and if i did select one at a much bigger price its because i think it will win.. |
|
By:
I like the current scoring system.
Besides which, the time to discuss possible changes to this is when a season i.e a comp, is about to start. Not partway through. |
|
By:
Only an observation and any change would obviously have to start in a new comp.
obviously you are not v good a big race winners if you think the current system is fine but thats upto UD... |
|
By:
you could have a race where 100/1 shot is beaten 200 length and finishes 5th and you get the same points as the 5/1 winner does, is that right or am i missing summat?...

scoop6winner, I'm afraid I don't have time now to get into a deep discussion on it but I will just say that when I started the comp a few years back we did do it on SP industry EW terms. The trouble was, someone got a few big price winners early on and virtually killed interest in the comp by half-way.
I believe the current points system whilst perhaps not being true to life, does make for a more exciting comp. That's not to say it couldn't do with some tweaking on the points. As for your equating a well beaten 100/1 5th to 5/1 winner, well it's just as likely that in these types of competitive races a 100/1 5th will be within a few lengths of the winner and just as worthy of the points. You've stated you are winner or nothing kind of person, fair enough, lots aren't and this is only a game at the end of the day. Anyway, as regards your request for changing points structure I'm open to further opinions. cheers :) |

Scoring system fine as it is. Thanks for all your hard work UD.

By:
I like the scoring system as it is too. Dont have enough clue what I'm doing if too much emphasis is put on winners
|
|
By:
Thanks UD for the time to reply i understand that you have been doing this for years and there is a need to keep the competition competitive for the whole season...
onwards and upwards....... |
|
By:
Variety is the spice of life and this comp is just that, variety. UD its a brilliant formula for creating a fun competition, and it should, in my humble opinion, remain as it is. :)
