Firstly, update on Matt's health.

Matt Cardle is determined to continue to sing in this weekend’s X Factor 2010 final, despite Doctors warning the 27-year-old to withdraw or risk long-term damage to his throat. The singer has been suffering with illness for the past 3 weeks, and today his mentor Dannii Minogue revealed it’s tough and go whether Matt will be well for the final.

Chatting to the Metro about last week’s semi-final, Dannii said: “We were really worried about him and I said, ‘No matter what happens, health comes first. Don’t do it if you’re sick.’”

Matt is still suffering from chronic tonsillitis and Doctors have advised him that continuing to sing while suffering could do long-term damage to his voice. Dannii Minogue revealed: “If he pulls out, he pulls out. Life goes on.

“It’s just not worth it. His voice is his future and singing on it could do serious long-term damage. He’ll have a big future no matter what. The most important thing is preserving that. You just have to look at the bigger picture. Obviously, it’s a competition and it is gutting but ultimately there’s nothing you can do if you are not well.”

The Aussie judge added: “He was ill last weekend and pushed through. Then it got worse. Doctors literally had him on everything… antibiotics and steroids. But then he and the others were out in the cold during the week, which was not a good idea. The thing is with Matt he is just such a professional and so talented that, even on a bad day, he puts most in the shade.”

If they want to nobble Cardle for Becca it's easily done. More poor stories about Cardle this week certainly have put the jitters on me. Big congrats to Becca backers if you pull this off. Think I was well off the mark with calling you rampers, if they want her she's an odds on shot, still a big if but looking less than a big if than I thought it was Cry

LOL rmb - i'm almost the exact opposite to you.

started the week thinking that rebecca was going to do it - momentum, cowell ramping, etc - but what othh said yesterday has totally thrown that out.  i still think she has a good chance, but it would take a serious SERIOUS turnaround to win it.

have shifted more green onto matt accordingly, and made one d red for the first time this series.  hope i don't regret that!!

Thanks figgy and aa.  Interesting, clearly that doesn't look great for 1D.  JLS also struggled  in the early rounds, then they had the benefit of a bottom 2 place giving them a good relaunch for the last 3 weeks when their vote took off.  Here are JLS's votes

wk 1 5.03%
wk 2 9.21%
wk 3 10.81%
wk 4 17.00%
wk 5 13.26%
wk 6 9.91%
wk 7 11.75%
wk 8 24.34%
wk 9 35.03%
final 30.65% and 41.66%

Don't forget that groups always start poorly as it takes the audience a while to get to know the individual members, and as JLS have shown support can grow as the contest goes on.  Perhaps their poor polling is also due to the lack of a great performance.  Maybe 'Torn' or something with Robbie will change that.  I'm not ramping btw, my book is heavily skewed in favour of Matt, just felt someone should be putting the case for 1D.

Report GymTanLaundry December 10, 2010 9:47 PM GMT
yep interesting question stroodle.

normally sang right at end for a big final vote push.

HOWEVER!

if all 4 acts are releasing a their "winners song" presumably cowell will want them all to sing them on the show, which might suggest they sing them tomorrow.  strange one, but i could see them doing it on the first show.
Report stroodle December 10, 2010 9:56 PM GMT
Yes thats what I was thinking myself, with the four acts only there Saturday. On an earlier post I read Rebecca was sing a duffy song which I thought was a good one, but it wasnt the one I originally thought it was. I have just listened to it for the first time and its a belter. I can see Rebecca smashing this one, its unusual to like a song straight of the bat first time hearing it, it could be that duffy has that uniqueness to her voice which sucks you in. This is looking good for Rebecca in my opinion.
Report GymTanLaundry December 10, 2010 10:01 PM GMT
yep, the duffy song is almost like a "winners song" - the title itself "distant dreamer" is perfect.

matt's biffy clyro song is a strange choice for an x factor coronation.

Report charliebigpotatoes December 10, 2010 10:15 PM GMT
I would say that Distant Dreamer is a bit boring - its a ballad and Rebcceca will be standing very very still.  I watched Duffy doing it live, starts well then its a bit dull. It is not one of Duffy's more popular songs, more "album filler".

Biffy is a great choice. Great song that he's played many times before as it was part of his acoustic repertoire. The kids like Biffy too and the kids don't like Cardle - so it appeals outside of his core/base support like Rhianna's young/urban concept does.
Report stroodle December 10, 2010 10:18 PM GMT
Looking at all the songs Rebecca has, also the duet with Christine this is looking very good for the class act to shine tomorrow. Ill stop ramping now, it should be a good show tomorrow.
Report GymTanLaundry December 10, 2010 10:19 PM GMT
do you not think that singing with rihanna while rebecca sings beautiful with christina, and singing biffy clyro, while rebecca does a nice safe duffy "x factor style" ballad, could help rebecca steal a good chunk of his fanbase?

If true, I think it blows the final wide open.  Not good for Matt, but much better for Rebecca and One Direction.

Of the winner's songs, Rebecca is the only one that complies with the traditional XF number - could this be significant?

I love Many of Horror myself and I'm sure Matt will do it justice - but whether it resonates with a wide enough audience remains to be seen.  As for Firework...  WTF?!  Surely this can't be right.

Yes I posted that last night.  Not ideal.

What I'm concerned about is if Matt's song choices are correct why isn't he doing 'First Time Ever'?  I'm surmising it's because he sings it in such a high key that with his voice problems he knows he can't hit the notes so has picked easier songs to do.  I am worried I must admit.  With all the polls he appears about a 1/3 shot yet he's still 5/6?  Strange.

Rebecca Ferguson scraps her X Factor final song choices... at 4AM!
December 11th, 2010 09:00 Updated: December 11th, 09:20 | Posted in Contestants, Judges, Live shows, News by Rachel Wise

Rebecca Ferguson

Rebecca Ferguson reportedly phoned mentor Cheryl Cole at 4AM yesterday in tears telling her that “Everything was wrong.” According to The Mirror Cheryl and her team spent all of yesterday on rehearsing new songs for tonight’s final, scrapping Rebecca’s previous song choices. PLUS: Cher Lloyd goes AWOL!

Rebecca, who is second favourite to win the show this weekend, was upset with her poor rehearsals on Thursday and wanted to change her song choices at the 11th hour. A show source told the tabloid: “Rebecca is normally calm, but she got very upset at the contestants’ house after rehearsal and had no choice but to call Cheryl, even though it was the middle of the night.

“She felt some of the songs weren’t right for her and the staging didn’t feel natural. She told Cheryl ‘It is all wrong, it is just not working for me’.

“Rebecca was very apologetic about calling, but it didn’t faze Cheryl at all and she took it in her stride. She got out of bed and started working on ideas there and then.

“It is far from ideal preparation but Cheryl has worked out a new set and Rebecca was back on stage yesterday rehearsing all the new moves and songs.”

Rebecca cryptically Tweeted yesterday: “I love the element of surprise.”
Advertisement - Article continues below

If Rebecca’s problems weren’t bad enough, Cheryl’s other act Cher Lloyd was also causing problem yesterday when she disappeared from rehearsals. Another source said: “We lost her for a while, she messed up a song, flipped out and then disappeared for an hour.”

Tonight Cher will duet with Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am.

Cheryl Cole has reportedly become a "paranoid wreck" ahead of tonight's X Factor final.

According to The Sun, the singer has banned the other judges and production staff from her dressing room after becoming the target of ongoing practical jokes backstage.

A source said: "Cheryl believes Simon [Cowell] is deliberately trying to sabotage her ahead of the final. He keeps barging in her dressing room and saying her acts sound terrible. He's also sent the One Direction lads to knock on the door and run off.

"She has reached the end of her tether. She has enough on her plate without him winding her up. Cheryl is convinced there is some conspiracy. She's become a paranoid wreck, a total mess."
