I may be becoming cynical but the more I look at that incident, the more I think it was a tactic on behalf of Cowell.
The journalist may have been a plant to set Wagner up but you see these stories about the contestants all day every day and yet Cheryl decided to bring this one up. Possibly to stop the Wagner momentum?
She is supposedly the nations sweetheart with a lot of influence over the public. This confrontation might just have been what was needed to get him in the bottom 2 and out of the show.
Now I know Wagner has no singing voice but surely deserves equal chance of every contestant? So do you buy what happened Saturday as a genuine question or a set up to put people off him?

i think cowell would realise that cheryl asking that question would be likely to galvanise the wagner vote, rather than dampen it.

Wagner totally owned her in that confrontation - she was seething! 
He'd mentioned to a journalist that Cheryl was from a working class background, so she tried to have a go at him about it on live TV! Someone should have a clip of their exchange somewhere.

He really showed her up I thought. Seems a decent enough chap just trying his best, has few allies on the show and she try's to show him up in front of millions. She looked stupid after that. Can't stand her myself.

I think to be fair though we can all see he's absolutely awful so without really tearing him to bits what can they say. It's almost "Well I like your Sgt Pepper's jacket" What else can they do?
