Looking over the final three acts in previous series, would you say there is a pattern?

Young, cute solo male - Joe, Leon, Shayne (all won), Ray (second), Eoghan (third)

This year's contender - Aiden?!

Slightly older, more mature male - Steve (won), Olly, Rhydian, Andy (all second), Ben (third)

This year's contender - Matt?!

Young, sultry solo female singer - Alexandra, Leona (both won), Stacey (third)

This year's contender - Rebecca?!

Maybe we're in danger of over-complicating it and this is more straightforward than we think!

I've always fancied Matt and Aiden from the start so that suits me.  We can all see Matt's going along nicely but Aiden isn't overly fancied at the moment so I hope you're right.

Amonst the girls you'd have to say Rebecca though I have a sneeky feeling that Cher could pull it round with the right songs and costume change.

Interesting observation though.

There’s a danger of over-analysing and looking for a profile that fits the winner

and there have always been plenty of contestants fitting those descriptions who have left the show much earlier.

SuBo almost won BGT.

But there is something in that. So at present 1D are the cuckoo in the nest, set to drift.

That was my thought Henry...  Not trying to draw any conclusions from this, other than to flush out the unlikely winners - such as the groups, as well as the likes of Mary, Wagner and Cher.  OK, so you could say that's stating the blindlingly obvious, but given how short One Direction are in the market, as well as this week's plunges on Mary and Wagner, perhaps there's as much profit in eliminating the unlikely finalists as pinpointing the ultimate winner.

I did fancy these three (Aiden, Matt and Rebecca) at the outset, but I've gone right off Aiden now and think he's too quirky to match the profile of previous winners.  Likewise, I'm yet to be convinced that Rebecca is anywhere near the same class as a Leona or Alexandra, although she'll still be popular for sure.

Which maybe points to Matt as the mainstream contender - but he's way too short in the betting now to present any sort of value whatsoever.

Merely trying to be thought provoking, not pretending to have any crystal ball!

Another pattern?

Due to lack of real groups at the audition stage, Louis came up with the idea of creating two new groups (one boy band and one girl band) from auditionees who were originally solo artists but weren't good enough on their own.  Cowell was their mentor in order to ensure success.  Girl band were supposedly the new Girls Aloud.  Boy band were poster fodder for 13 year old girls.  Prior to top 12 show both groups were highly rate in the winner market.  Many on here argued that it was time for a group to win and that young girls were bound to vote for the boy band.  During top 12 show one of the groups turned out to be rather anonymous while the other group had only one good singer.

Futureproof (boy band) - 10th
Hope (girl band) - 5th after being saved by the judges three times.

Of course, it's different this year!  Only one of the groups is highly rated by the market this time.

Agree that they're going all out to break the groups hoodoo with 1D and maybe, just maybe this time they might crack it...  Previously they have been concerned that individuals can convey their personality better than groups and therefore engage with the voters much easier.  But with Liam, Harry, the Irish one, the Asian one and the Other one, maybe they have half a chance.

But I doubt it!

I see you only know two names.  One more than most I'm sure!

Two more than the previous groups, so they must be doing something right! Laugh

Older woman pattern

Older woman is featured during audition stage but focus is mainly on her back story.  Opens here at odds of about 40-50.  At top 12 stage, audience, judges and market are all totally astonished by the fact that an older woman can sing.  Not only that but she knows how to pick a good song and how to give it plenty of emotion.  Standing ovation.  Odds immediately fall to about 10. Layers predict that older woman probably knows only one song  Next week another standing ovation.  Layers predict that older lady will not be able to sing a disco song.  Next week older woman (who was a teenager during the disco era) blasts out a disco song.  Older woman continues to perform well every week until vote transference amongst younger contestants overpowers her.

Rowetta - 4th
Brenda - 4th
Niki - 4th
