Spain '82 mainly because of Brazil
'74 because of Holland and Cruyff |
|
By:
1970 was the best because of Brazil - I thought England would get to at least the semi final with our best ever squad - followed by 1982
|

I hated the last one in South Africa. Those vuvuzelas just grated on me and the ball was like one of those 99p corner shop sorts.

USA 94 for me.
Some great players. Romario, Roberto Baggio, Klinsmann, Stoichkov etc... |
|
By:
86, but probably only because it was my first one.
|
|

86 and Maradona. Goal against England and then against Belgium. 5 goals in the final, plenty of penalty shoot outs. Laudrup and Elkjaer for Denmark, Scifo for Belgium, Platini for France, respectively for each country their best players for many years. It was a wide open World Cup and the best team won, with the best player in the world at his absolute peak.

I honestly think this World Cup will be one of the best. Some great attacking players around at the moment.
|
|
By:
At least this World Cup is in a proper footballing country and that definitely makes it more prestigious.

I enjoyed 82 most I think

On the last WC Forum there was a thread like this and someone said everyone's favourite world cup are the ones when they were aged 10-14
Probably because they are old enough to appreciate the significance and rarity of it , but young enough not to see all the negatives and overhyping of teams/players . |

the best was 1970, the best team who DID NOT win the world cup brazil in 1982 ..the most memorable was 1990 but then im irish.

1974 best
1970 Italy v West Germany semi a great match. altitude a problem 1974 final a great match. Wonderful Netherlands a joy 1978 poor pitch surfaces, crowds throwing paper onto pitch 1982 Good finals imo. Rossi sensational, Schumacker a disgrace 1986 finals in a stupid location again - altitude 1990 well organised tournament, boring final (but I had Germany at 13/2) 1994 biggest crowds, but forgettable tournament. Jaws music for stretcher funny 1998 remembered for Brazil not turning up for final. Zidane the king 2002 average tourney. Roy Keane a prima donna 2006 remembered most for Zidane sending off. 2010 Spain bored their way to the trophy. Zuvuzelas v annoying I have watched all matches since the 1966 final (four in one day in 1990 a few times). Now matches take place simultaneously, so its watching repeats. |

Actually i recall in 1982 they often had group games played at the same time in different groups . For some reason though the last games in the same group would be played at different times , enabling the WG/Aust fix . In that sense it is much better now as the only games played simultaneously are the deciding games in the same group . |

As a nine year old in 1978, I loved stopping up late to watch the games and fell in love with Peru.
It seemed strange to watch a side that always played the ball on the floor. And Cubillas free kick V the Scotch cemented it. 1978 was the best. |
|
By:
ones in the 70s for me. 82 and 86 decent and deteriorated ever since .
|
|
By:
1982, just to watch that Brazilian team live was sensational. They made you want to go out and play football all day and night.
The football today is sh*te. |

i'm younger than most on here and i haven't seen any good world cups at all - tbh i dont know what all the fuss is about - i'm always glad when it's over and get back to the epl/cl action.
i've seen clips from world cups from years ago and it looks like teams attacked more back then. these days it's all about safety first. so my list of world cups are as follows... 1998 carp 2002 carp 2006 carp 2010 carp |

Germany 4-1 England A very enjoyable game of football ![]() |

think problem for me and other fellow older posters is that due to saturation of football there are no or few surprises, you looked forward to wc in 70s and 80s to see players you didn't regularly see eg pele, cruyff, kempes, Socrates etc. now can see likes of messi Ronaldo etc every week. although its progress its not come without a price.

France were also delicious to watch in 1982, Platini, Tigana, Giresse spring to mind.

82 Brazil team was the best to watch in my lifetime.
There defeat to Italy was as distressing as any defeat I can recall for my club team. They were a joy to watch. |

1982 edges it from 1970.
Since then, I'd say 1986 and 2006 had their moments and probably the best of the rest. Brazil 1970 had the best team, but 1982 had greater depth and better players/better matches. Brazil's route to the final in 1970 Romania-England-Czech-Peru-Uruguay-Italy. Only England gave them a game. Two truly great (ie iconic) games- the 4-3 semi WG v Italy (and mainly the extra-time bit), + the Final (not because it was a contest, but just footballing perfection by Brazil) Italy 1982 Poland-Peru-Cameroon-Argentina-Brazil-Poland(again)-W.Germany Great games- Brazil v USSR; Italy v Brazil; West Germany v France; + the Final itself |

Italy qualified from their group n 1982 without winning a game ( I think )

1998 World Cup for me with France winning on home soil.

so much happened in 82
and it wins by some way |

1982 by a mile
the brazil team knocked out by Italy are the best side ive ever seen |
|
By:
Aberdonia- I have to say Brazil 1970 because they won it and had Pele, but had the 82 Brazilians won (as they really should have done), the argument would have been over for 50 years from 1982.

1978 was the best. Kempes was unreal, Holland were superb, and the Scots made us all laugh. Shame that won't ever happen again.

the first one i remember watching was Italia 90.
Rushing home from school to watch the nightly games! Cameroon and roger miller celebration, must have been the first non white peron id ever seen with the bright green tops / red shorts Gazza yellow card and crying and thinking germany had 2 teams. the dirty / tough argies italy's schillaci still gutted i was grounded and missed the final |
|
By:
1990 was good because it was the only one Gazza ever played in.
|

It really does depend when you grew up. 1978 was the first one I remember and it left a massive impression on me. So it will always be my favourite. But looking back now and including watching games from world cups before my time, I'd have to say 1982 was the best for sheer quality and level of competition - so many great sides, so many world class players. 1986 was also fantastic and was the last really great World Cup. The Brazil v France QF in 1986 is the greatest match of all time, IMO.
We're long overdue a good one. It's been too long. |

Don't forget Gomez and Rossiteau
