Prem Lge players left in World Cup

Uruguay: 0/23
Ghana: 4/23
Germany: 0/23 (all 23 play in Germany)
Argentina: 4/23 (inc. 1 in Championship last season)
Netherlands: 5/23
Brazil: 1/23
Paraguay: 2/23
Spain: 3/23 (all others play in Spain)

Total number of players remainining in tournament who play in Premier League: 19/184, not even a full squad's-worth. And that includes players who are not first picks, plus the likes of Huerelho Gomez and Pepe Reina who have not and will not play a single minute of the WC unless an injury befalls Brazil/Spain's first-choice keeper.Confused

I don't think its a secret that the premiership was poor this season and a lot of top names were struggling with injury, and many of those have underperformed.

As for the statistic I am not sure what it is meant to show on its own.  Is 19 a lot or a little for non-nationals from a given league?
Report Can't Catch Me June 30, 2010 4:44 PM BST
A pointless stat I fear. How many Bundesliga players are still in the tournament? How many from the Cl winning Serie A?
Report Stone Roses June 30, 2010 5:32 PM BST
What a silly stat.
Report mayway June 30, 2010 5:34 PM BST
You can only judge the quality of the PL based on the PL teams record in the CL and only then can you judge in relation to European clubs.

They've been doing well.

Your stat is a pile of p00.

I am sick of the Prem and have been for many years. Over-hyped, bloated football 'product' monopolised by the wealthiest clubs who have sides largely consisting of expensive foreign imports, coached by foreign managers and owned by overseas investors. It's a nonsense to even talk of it as an 'English league'. For all its Englishness, it may as well be based in Dubai.
What do we have to look forward to next season? The same old battle between Man Utd and Chelsea, with Arsenal & Man City trying to cling to their coat-tails. And come April the only excitement will be the battle for 4th place, and the relegation scrap.
Alan Green on 5Live suggested England fans should boycott the England's team next game when a far more worthwhile boycott, in the long-term interests of our game, is to boycott Sky/ESPN's Premiership coverage and stop attending Prem games until the league is reconstructed with less teams, a winter break, and a law passed that demands teams must field at least 5/6 English players. Only then might we finally see England do well at an int'l tournament.
Report FatherMaguire June 30, 2010 7:06 PM BST
I'm all for boycotting the bore-athon that is the premier league but I dont see how insisting each team plays 5/6 english players will help - its bad enough as it is.

The argument that playing at the top level would improve their performances is utter nonsense - I could play golf with Tiger Woods for the rest of my life and still be kack, it would just mean that the premier league became championship standard - our players need to improve from about 5-8 years of age, when they are in their 20s you are polishing a t urd

To Father M, a quota of home players would give more opportunity for English players to reach the peak of their chosen profession. In addition, I agree thatcoaching needs to emphasise skill and technique over mere goal-scoring results.

I'll second that. The premier League is slowly destroying English football and has been for some time. Would love to see a boycott of both England's next game and the Premiership but I can't see it happening.
Have heard a rumour of some big news about to break in the next few days regarding where it went wrong for England. If true, the media are going to have a field day.
Report FatherMaguire July 1, 2010 12:49 AM BST
slarty, the english players already have every opportunity they need to get to the peak of their chosen profession, they would get all the games that they wanted if they were better footballers. Those that choose to sit on their backsides in the reserves picking up giant wages at Big 4 clubs wouldnt be significantly better players for playing first team football

Players from all round the world see the EPL as a pension pot opportunity. The quicker the clubs realise this the better for the English Game.

Even journeymen players can very quickly become multi-millionaires.

its worth noting that there is a lot of dual nationality cheating that allows Italian clubs to flout the non-EU player rules and hence have more South American players than seems possible

Can see English football having the same problem as the scottish league had, due to the foreign players(and not the best ones, they play in good leagues)

It's all Alan Sugar's fault.

When Sky started up and was looking to break into the market for live games, he was chairman of Tottenham and Amstrad. ITV put a package together which would have shown the 5 bigger clubs (then Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal, & Spurs) more than the others on live terrestrial TV.

Sugar voted against the deal because Amstrad had a deal with Sky in relation to the manufacture and supply of the satellite dishes and he didn't want to lose that deal.
