Over 2.5 goals at odds against is my bet..
Argentina forward line v German defence is a very good match up for Argentina. Ghana created many chances against Germany but didn't take them, I'm far from convinced the German defence is a strength. England for a very short spell really had them rattled also. The centre backs are very tall and can be turned so Messi playing in Tevez/Higuain must be a nightmare for the Geman manager. Argentina may decide to play defensively and try and win in a low scoring match like their last encounter this year in Munich, which they won one nil. I'm discounting this possibility from what I have seen of the two teams so far in this competition. Expecting Argetina to win a thoroughly entertaining match and for there to be plenty goal Hope I'm right |

Mexico 0-1 Uruguay
Argentina 4-1 South Korea ........................... Uruguay 2-1 South Korea Argentina 3-1 Mexico Both Argentina and Uruguay beat Mexico & South Korea. Argentina beat both more easily, but are Argentina that great? They were flattered against Mexico with an offside goal, and a bad mistake that gave the ball to Higuein. The Mexico goal made them look ordinary at the back. |

The master tactician that is Joachim Loew will win this game.

Tough one to call, I'm not convinced Argentina are as strong a favourite as the odds suggest.
However, it's worth noting that Argentina beat Germany 1-0 in a friendly in Munich on 3rd March this year and the line-ups were very similar to what we can expect in the Q/F. Was a tight game of few chances so Friday's game may not be the goalfest many are expecting. |

Both teams attack in numbers and have pedestrian looking centre halves in front of keepers prone to the odd comedy moment. I think it will be a classic that will be decided in favour of the team that bosses the middle of the park best. It could be this years stand-out game and might well finish something like 4-3, I don't mind who wins.

One point I made weeks ago is that Argentina had a rough route to the quarter finals
Johannesburg (5,700 feet) Johannesburg Polokwane Johannesburg Those matches at altitude might have tired them. There defenders are a little elderly: Martín Demichelis (age 29.5) Clemente Rodríguez (age 28.9) Nicolás Burdisso (age 29.2) Gabriel Heinze (age 32.2) Ariel Garcé (age 30.9) Walter Samuel (age 32.2) Nicolás Otamendi (age 22.3) and the Germany attack Stefan Kießling (age 26.4) Lukas Podolski (age 25.0) Miroslav Klose (aged 32.0) Thomas Müller (aged 20.8) Cacau (age 29.2) Mario Gómez (age 24.9) and this is game 5. |

I see where you are going Kincsem and it may turn out to be a valid point but from what you have posted (thanks btw) the Argentina team isn't exactly past it. Samuel and Heinze 32? not too old for me to start thinking about the match being decided by fitness/energy levels.
I'm already committed towards a high scoring match, who wins I think comes down to the midfield battle. I expect Veron to start, I think he was being rested against Mexico in a match they expected to win . He came on and played 20 mins at the end around the time Mexico had scored ( I think) to see the game out. With an experienced playmaker and with the possibility of Germany not assigning someone to Messi I expect Germany to be doing most of the chasing and hence my expectation for Argentina to win. I think they will play a kind of 4-4-1-1 formation to ensure they can at least match Germany in midfield. http://argentina.worldcupblog.org/ has a few recent bits and pieces on the match some may find interesting and has what I think Argentina's likely team and formation will be. Who knows exactly what is going through Maradona's mind though to be fair ![]() |

I think Germany could leak goals as they have been opened a few times by lesser teams.
It is the game of the World Cup, possibly better than the final. |

Overs both very good attacks, both poor/average defences.

backed Germany at 16 before the opening game and again before England game. Didn't fancy the Argies before the tournament but now sufficiently worried to lay half my green to cover my stakes. Really can't call this one.

Would agree with Overs as both sides relatively weak in defence.
Have a strong fancy for Germany here. Tactically astute, they will subdue Messi and hence subdue Argentina. Don't think the Argie defence will cope with the German movement. Deja vu of 4 years ago when an Arie side playing well came a cropper against the lesser fancied Germans. This is the one where Diego's tactical limitations are exposed. |

I'm starting to think the Germans will win - in fact I've put them in my multis.
I may even add germans with my last two transfers (sky fantasy football) |

Of course that ignored the fact that more than half this Germany team played in the 2006 semi-final and Euro 2008 final, whereas England hadn't been near a final or semi-final for twenty years. |

Fancy argies for this, but the germans know how to win these games, however they only beat a very poor England side last time out and conceded 2 goals legitamate, into the bargin and if they can concede 2 against England, then I'm sure the Argies, will win this.
