How are we defining a 'top' international side?
Report Fernando-Redondo June 29, 2010 4:49 PM BST
Well, as far as I  can see, England have beaten Paraguay,Denmark,Belgium and Cameroon in the knockout phase.None of these are what I would class as the top bracket of International football.
Report Live4 June 29, 2010 4:52 PM BST
So what sort of teams do we need to be beating?  Holland, Brazil, Argentina, Spain.  That's it isn't it?
Report Fernando-Redondo June 29, 2010 4:54 PM BST
Yeah, I'd class those as traditionally being amongst the best. The fact that England have never beaten any of them when it matters should tell fans to aim their sights a bit lower!
Report Robbie_Box June 29, 2010 5:08 PM BST
beat Poland 3-0... they are world class... oh no sorry not world class... everywhere

Seems to be a lot of confusion between Euros and the World Cup.Totally different competitions. Take note how European teams have struggled again in this world cup outside Europe. Can't blame the temp this time.So far this World cup has been like many before it.

We have a chance in 2018 if we get the world cup in this country.

Spain beat Portugal who are ranked 3rd in the world right now so you can put you silly little rule book away on that one.
Report buddeliea June 30, 2010 7:51 AM BST
The 2 sides that were in that Euro final are stll in this WC and Europe do have their 3 best sides in the last 8,the others like France,Italy,Portugal and England are either too old now or just not good enough.
Think that is the main reason why S America have more, that and the conditions probably suit them a bit better as well.

In South America, everybody plays everybody so the better teams will almost always rise to the top of their qualifying group.

The European qualifying system suits the traditional big teams like France, Italy, Portugal etc because they are almost always 1st seeds while other countries who are not that far behind them labour as 2nd and 3rd seeds and have to perform well above their status in order to qualify.

I don't know how to resolve the European situation though.

Maybe just have 3 seedings instead of 6 and pick 2 from each seeding. Eventually this may even things out a bit as some of the traditionally big powers would be drawn against each other at some stage.

Eh, no I didn't.  I had a typo and typed 1960 when I meant to type 1970.  I corrected it in my next post.  There was no World Cup in 1960.

1986 England beat Poland 3 - 0.

At that time, Poland were a top team.

Reached WC semis in 82 and 74.

'We have a chance in 2018 if we get the world cup in this country.' The FA need to guilt-trip Blatter into giving them the WC in 2018...'Let us host it Sepp, come ooooon....I mean, you remember THE GOAL, don't you? The one we didn't get? HMMMMMMMMM?'

Not that it would work on him, the filthy little franco-swiss muppet.
Report loserschaselosers June 30, 2010 6:18 PM BST
no , we wouldn't have a chance if we got the WC in this country. Apparently our heroes aren't inspired by playing at Wembley these days, rather it makes them fearful, whereas all those little johnny foreigners really get up for matches at the home of football. it's so unfair. Cry
