The last four World Cup champions will atest to the fact that teams with strong defences do significantly better than teams with poor ones:
Brazil 1994: Jorginho/Cafu-Aldair-MarcioSantos-Branco
France 1998: Thuram-Desailly-Leboeuf-Lizarzu
Brazil 2002: Cafu-Lucio-Edmilson-RoqueJunior-RobertoCarlos
Italy 2006: Zambrotta-Cannavaro-Materazzi-Grosso
So looking ahead to this olympiad's renewal, who do we think boasts the strongest defence? Here are some possible starting back fours for the leading contenders?
Brazil: Maicon-Lucio-Lusaio-Bastos
Spain: SergioRamos-Puyol-Pique-Arbeloa
Holland: Heitinga-Boulahourz-Ooijer-VanBrockhurst
England: Johnson-Ferdinand-Terry-Cole
Ivory Coast: Eboue-Toure-Meita-Boka

Argentina: ?
France: ?
Germany: ?
Portugal: ?
The ones with question marks are defences who I can't name so possibly doubts about them. Ivory Coast look to be strong enough in defence so for all that people might like to think that they concede too many goals, the opposite may in faxct prove to be true. Brazilian squad is very strong in defence, I left out Thiago Motta, Dani Alves and Juan but any of them could start. Holland and Spain's defence look above average on paper but past World Cups would indicate that these team's defences often struggle despite looking good on paper.
So top three defences, I'd say:
1. Brazil 2. England 3. Ivory Coast
Of course, others may beg to differ. As I say, I don't know enough about the teams with question marks. Any thoughts?
You might wanna take a look at the Algeria v Ivory Coast video from this year's AFCON. Rest assured that you will soon change your mind about their defensive qualities!

Brazil and Italy NAP. You don't need to know anything about Italy's defence, it's just guaranteed to be good. It has to be as their strikers are so pony.
England - disagree. Ropey defence. Johnson and Terry both suspect.
Serbia - dont forget the last WC. They came in (albeit as S&M) with an incredible defensve record in qualifying, and got smashed 6-0 by the argies.

............................................................ The German squad age profile is interesting.
German squad 27 players: average age 25.5; median age 24.7 England squad 29 players: average age 28.1; median age 28.6
Age calculated today Germany have 6 players over 28-y-o (incl two goalkeepers). England have 17 players over 28-y-o (incl two goalkeepers).
The England under 28-y-o players are - Hart, Johnson, Baines, Dawson, Lennon, Walcott, Milner, Huddlestone, Johnson, Rooney, Defoe, Bent (play these to give England a chance imo).

Think you will find its the team that is best organized in defence and midfield and plays as a team rather then individuals that win world cup, hence why Holland have never won a world cup!!!
Italy won the world cup in 2006 by having a solid setup in defence and organized through out the spine of the team with Gattusso & Pirlo dictating the play, Both Brazil & Argentina turned it on, but was disjointed by individual players not clicking!!!
Brazil in 2002 won the world cup by keeping the ball and having a strong spine in midfield and defence, just remember them beating England in the humidity out there with 10 men, they were use to the conditions and collectivly kept the ball and in ronaldino they had a unknown superstar out there.
France 1998, another team not individuals, yes Zidane was brilliant, but once again the midfield was organized and well drilled, there back line was marshalled well, no flashy stuff that so many others produced, conditions were ideal for them being a host nation.
The conditions in South Africa will suit european sides more then central africians sides and south amercian sides, it wont be as warm and humid as other world cup, the team that plays together will win, key partnerships formed etc. it isnt just who on paper has the best defence!! Fact

Brazil's philosophy in 58,62 and 70 was score more goals than the opposition and you win. It worked well for them until 82.Then Rossi beat them at their own game.
