I think you are confusing betting odds with chances.  Odds imo are connected to popularity, population, wealth.  Odds are based on the money wagered.

In the book "Why England Lose" by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski there are many interesting statistics.

Best Sporting Nations
Total Points Across All Sports and Overall Ranking
1. USA
2. USSR/Russia
£. Britain
4. Germany
5. France
6. Brazil
7. Italy
8. Argentina
9. Norway
10. Argentina

Quote "The main thing about our rankings is the importance of wealth"

Football World Cup: Top Ten Countries
1. Brazil (30)
2. Germany (24)
3. Italy (18)
4. Argentina (12)
5. England (6)
6. France (5)
7. Spain (4)
8. Sweden (3)
9. Netherlands (2)
10. Russia/USSR (1)

Something that might affect the odds bookmarkers offer around the world might be found in the following stats.

Estimate of Manchester United fans
2003 75 million (Mori)
2007 90 million (Man Utd)
2008 333 million (TNS Sport)

The other well "supported" clubs worldwide are Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid.

Is there a connection between the number of "fans" and the World Cup odds worldwide.  Some of these serial fans support many teams at the same time, a concept "foreign" to British supporters.

nope your wrong and changing your argument to suit you.. you and the other lemmings say the only reason england are 6s ish is because of patriotic english money... in the UK i can see this.

around the world bookies dont care whot he teams are, if the best team in the world was from a third world country they would be favs..

the reason england are and would (and shoudl) be third favs is because on recent form we are prob the third best side..  its not hard to see when you look. argentina should be in front of holland in the betting? why? not a chance in my book.
Report kincsem May 7, 2010 11:41 PM BST
You are correct in every detail.  I and the other lemmings salute your superiour analysis.  Thank you.

i know i am right...

i also know the odds for england in books all over the world have little to do with our perceived wealth...

like i said.. its easy to say its patriotic money in uk books.. i dont agree. its just an easy way to join in with everyone else who completely writes off england but good luck

Keep backing your 16/1 chances at less than half the priceLaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh
Report morrissey May 11, 2010 11:28 PM BST
no offence your a mug if yoy REALLY and TRULY think england are a 16/1 price....

and aint it funny how there are so many layers of england on here for what can only be massive amounts... never seems that much actually taken though...

must be some huge massive winners on these threads.. or a load of bull****s who follow what everyone else says..

i know where my cash would be

I'd say it's a 1/10 shot your cash will be going in their pockets

That's right, I'm a mug who just happens to win money from betting and poker every single year, must just get lucky all the time I guessLaughLaughLaugh
Report morrissey May 12, 2010 12:03 AM BST
i actually have never said i was backing england

my points are as follows and if yuo cant understand this then all well and good.

england are deserving third favs in front of the following and based on recent form: argentina, france, germany, holland and portugal...

next point: that england arent just third favs and so short because of patriotic money and i have also shown you why..

if you seriously cant understand what im saying then like i say fair enough... :)

and if england are so gash why dont you lay them in every game in some way shape or form and then you can have some of my money if you wish...
Report morrissey May 12, 2010 12:04 AM BST
and yes chop you and about a thousand others on here win money through gambilng and poker on here every year :) congratulations to you and the rest..

makes a mockery of only being 0.5-1% of ppl that actually make long term profits though...

but well done etc

Doesn't really bother me if you believe me or not tbh. But if you don't, check Modjadji on sharkscope (full tilt) for poker, obviously I can't prove my winnings on here as we all know screenshots, p&ls etc can be faked ;)

My 20 years of experience in betting has stood me in reasonably good stead, and I know a 16/1 shot when I see one ;)

It's quite possible for a 16/1 football side to be 7/1 just because it's popular, in exactly the same way a 16/1 horse can be 7/1 for no other reason than it's from a popular stable. No difference whatsover.
Report morrissey May 12, 2010 2:45 AM BST
yup id agree IF it was just in the UK that england were third favs and such a price..

it doesnt work like that with the world wide books im afraid and i have worked at a few in my time.. :)

to say england arent justifiably third favs is a bit daft and the only real contender for it would be holland. based on qualifying/competitive games in the last two years
