... with this starting eleven

Goalkeeper : Who knows who is considered the number one, personally Id go with Paul Robinson, seems to be back on form BUT Cappello will go with Calamity James if fit imo,Foster is no good and Greene ....well if he starts for Englamd we will struggle to get past group stage !

Glenn Johnson: Attacking fullback ,good at going forward but woeful in defence
Ashley Cole: Probably best weve got, good going forward and world class full back
John Terry: Too slow, will get turned to easily
Rio Ferdinand: Will he be fit and is he really that good anymore?
Gerrard: Now becoming over rated, tournament will find him out, you can get away with running around like a headless chicken against lesser teams in the EPL but NOT in a world cup.
Lampard: See Gerrard
Gareth Barry: Reliable but again prone to making crucial mistakes
Lennon: Best weve got @ moment but final ball a worry, lets hope Walcott shows something before WC
Rooney: World class player, BAD temper, can see him getting targeted and sent off
Heskey: Ok hold up player but lack of goals is the problem and mobility poor.. in fact a joke he is an England player imo

My eleven would be

...........................................Hart...........................................
W Brown............ Upson...........................Terry................A.Cole

Milner................Carrick.........................Barry....................J.Cole

...................... Rooney.........................Defoe.........................

A far more mobile team..

So now lump on England and cue abuse ;) GL England btw but cant see us getting past QFs...

Englands main problem is they have to pick english players, hth,
cup chances, a cat in hell has more chance
Report baracouda30 January 1, 2010 7:56 PM GMT
Don't see too many goals from that midfield.

Has to be Gerrard/Lampard with Lennon and Joe Cole/Milner. Pace is what we need as we don't have the players to play possession football to the standard of Brazil or Spain.

Pace scares even the best defenders.
Report arsenalman January 2, 2010 12:01 PM GMT
hence defoe instead of heskey
Report I win every time! January 2, 2010 7:47 PM GMT
James
Johnson
Terry
Ferdinand
A Cole
Lampard
Barry
Gerrard
Walcott
Rooney
Heskey

I think this is Fabio's first choice XI. Plenty of pace there. Semi finals (if they're lucky).

4-3-3 btw.

England will not win the world cup because they cannot beat any of the major nations ie brazil, argentina, germany, italy in a world cup knockout match not group games and the last time they achieved this feat was 1966 against w.germany,to win a world cup you need the ability to win games on penalties as normally en route to a final some game will be decided this way and again england do not have the mentality to win on penalties.
I hope i am proved wrong.
1970 lost to w.germany
1974 DNQ
1978 DNQ
1982 Could not beat spain or w.germany in mini group of 3
1986 lost to argentina
1990 lost to germany
1994 DNQ
1998 lost to argentina
2002 lost to brazil
2006 lost to a non major nation portugal
in none of the above tournaments have they beaten a major nation in a knock-out match only done it in group matches and thats why england will not win the world cup.

All depends on who's fit for it.

If Hargreaves is fit, he's first choice in the midfield for me... in the anchorman role, protecting the back four

In an ideal situation with everyone fit :

--------------------------Hart
Johnson----Ferdinand------Terry-----A.Cole
---------------------Hargreaves
-------------Gerrard-----------Lampard
Lennon-----------------------------------Rooney
---------------------Heskey/Defoe

interesting thoughts arsenalfan

this could be a tournament for headless chickens (excepting the altitude matches)

-------------------Robinson-----------------------
Johnson------Ferdinand------Terry------A.Cole
Lennon------Gerrard------Lampard------J.Cole
------------Rooney-----C.Cole-----------------

Using subs

James
Lescot
Jagielka
Barry
Wright-Philips
Milner
Beckham
Defoe
Walcott

If they keep saying Defoe should be used as a sub then put Carlton Cole in over heskey, he can do everything that Heskey does but better and he has a good shot and more control over the ball. Only take 2 sub defenders as the back four shouldn't really be touched. only 1 main sub striker as crouch and heskey are useless, if any got injured gerrard could play a supporting role. Beckham will always change a game.

The only person I have left out who I would consider is carrick but barry just edges him.

Hopefully Carlton Cole joins Arsenal and can show how good he can be. he has to be taken!

I'm not an arsenal fan or west ham fan by the way.

I'd just like to add that if anyone mentions the fact that gerrard and lampard can't play together then its about time people took things more seriously. how can people just accept that they can't work together? they should have it drilled into them if they had to. hard work pays off, train and train again. practise and practise am I'm sure the 2 best england central attacking midfielders can work together for their country. If they can't what hope do we have??????

I am a Liverpool fan so perhaps a little bias, but even though he has been poor the past few games the criticism of Johnson seems strange. If another country has a similar type full back i.e Cafu of Brazil, then they are just constantly praised for how amazing they are at getting forward and never a mention of their defensive frailties.

Johnson does have things to seriously work on, positioning being the main one imo, but he's still a pretty good defender that is fantastic going forward so is comfortably the best right back we have for the WC as long as he recovers from this latest set back in time and gets back to full fitness.

We will not win the World Cup because like most other times WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH...no other reason...we are between the 5th and 20th best team...oh and we cant take penalties which is v important as well !!

I think people are forgetting what an advantage the conditions will be for countries
with cooler climates who have noticeably wilted in the heat in previous WC's.
It was absolutely freezing at night during the Confederations Cup last year , some
of the coldest weather I have experienced in the Joburg area.

soon to nail down the right back spot at Anfield and in the process book his world cup place.

not bad going forward but more importantly a better defender than johnson
