Newbie to US racing question(s): What is the relationship between PGM (as seen on drf charts), the number of the horse as listed on a BF market, and the post position? Do the horses fill the stall positions in order of their programme number so that there are no empty stalls? Are their saddlecloth numbers therefore their post positions?

Yes to the last question. Unless there are 1 and 1a (or 2 and 2x etc) in which case they could be anywhere.
You can follow US racing by following the number cloths as 1 is red 2 is white 3 is blue etc,but you need good camerawork and decent eyesigt particularly as the number cloth colours can fade. At some courses ( Turf Paradise currently) it's easier as the caps match the number cloths,but that is not the case at a lot of other tracks.
