Just got a big shock when I opened up the Belmont market and noticed IHA's name missing. It seems the horse has an injury and won't be shooting for immortality. Very sad for the connections and for racing generally.
My pick, Dullahan, is now fav ahead of Union Rags. I would have backed Dullahan, even with IHA in the field because his run in the Derby was excellent and he's been reported to have been working very well. I'm happy to settle for the shorter price now, but it would have been a much more interesting race with the original favourite there.
I'll Have Another's injury is serious enough to stop him running, but at least he'll still be OK to lead the field out for the race. I'm sure he'll come back and win a lot more races. And I'm pretty confident now about Dullahan.

The news gets worse ... It's a tendon problem and he is going to be retired.
Hi Pittsburgh nice to see another US thread from yourself and again i would have to disagree with your winning prediction. Dullahan ran well in the Derby but he closed from far back after the wicked pace of Bodemeister. Went The Day Well did very similar also in the Derby but got hammered in the Preakness when the fractions were slower. Also the track tonight seems to be suiting the inside so if Dullahan tries to make a wide move then i feel he will be running against the track bias.
Union Rags for me is the horse to be with as he got smashed up in the Derby and ran on to finish 7th. He wouldn't be the first disappointment in the Derby to then skip the Preakness and then show his true worth in the Belmont. Union Rags has never posted a big speed figure but tonight he won't need to as the fractions won't be mad so he should get a decent position and he does possess a good turn of foot and he has a victory to his name over this sometimes specialist track. Street Life also interests me as he ran well for 3rd in the Peter Pan over 9 furlongs and he has a late running inside style which may see him cut though a number of horse rounding the turn into the long Belmont stretch.
Should be a great race but kind of disappointing with the mighty I'll Have Another scratched.
IHA was no doubt a superstar and such a shame he has finished so soon but better to retire healthy than return a shadow of his great ability. I expect Bodemeister to mop up the 3 year old races now in mid and late season such as the Haskell and maybe the Travers.
For me both these horses are superior to Camelot who has barely beat a Group 1 winner nad is being deemed a UK great already!!

You've done it again Lavaman. Great analysis and judgement, especially your skill with track bias, just as you did in the Preakness.
I'm very new to the U.S racing scene but I'm really going to have to take a leaf out of your book and start incorporating track bias into my thinking. My only problem with that is that I've always thought it was one of those things that you don't really know about until it's too late ... when the day's races are all over. I guess on a long card like Belmont day or Preakness day you will probably have it sussed out by the time the big races come around, but I'm wondering how you deal with track bias when you're betting in the earlier races on the card.
