there are plenty of US players on here...they just want to make money...talk is cheap you know.
Report treetop August 22, 2011 8:45 PM BST
Many of the races are getting 25k or more so there are still plenty of punters. Perhaps BF are glad to be rid of the stalkers and complaints ?
Report funkypunk August 22, 2011 8:54 PM BST
i love the US stuff but 3 of the 4 tracks i like to play are on a break Woodbine being the exception...Turfway Park, Hawthorne & Tampa the others.
Report treetop August 22, 2011 9:00 PM BST
I think you have the right approach funky, specialise and get to know the tracks well. Ever been to any of them ?

With the autumn approaching, normally boom time for US racing on Betfair let's hope there is something can be sorted out. If there were no bots and arbers on here I wouldn't lose any sleep but it seems genuine players have been crippled in order to weed out the freeloaders.
Report funkypunk August 23, 2011 12:16 PM BST
'treetop' sorry for the belated reply...not been anywhere really, not a good traveller at all...i do specialise in a few tracks because i feel you have to...there are many, many US tracks as you know and one could go insane trying to play more than 2 or 3 at a time.
i don't study form persay as i'd rather listen to the track h'cappers...there are good and there are hopeless track h'cappers as you know.
i have all the video links and use 2 monitors with a video and racecard on each one, sometimes i'll open a 2nd betamerica video if covering 3 meets...i find the pre-race analysis and paddock/post parade paramount and i don't play unless i've seen it.
i try to get 2 tracks with the right timescale, one race ends then the other gets previewed...if one track gets delayed and runs into the other i'll try switching to my 3rd track.
the track h'cappers vary some will 'do' every horse in a race, some will only evaluate their picks...Woodbine is fantastic when it comes to pre-race analysis i find.
good luck to you 'treetop'.

Jas titled the thread "R.I.P forum" not "R.I.P US markets". So in that sense, I have to agree. The US markets that don't "compete" with UK racing appear to have about the same liquidity as "pre-PC charge days". Any contraction in liquidity is probably more due the general economic malaise we are going through than anything else. The "non-pro" type punter simply has less disposable income available to throw on here.

Liquidity is suggesting that there's plenty of punters trading the US markets, probably as many as before, but for some reason only known to themselves, they are not posting on the forum anymore. This is the real puzzle in my opinion.

Many thanks for an informative and intelligent post funky. I like to look at equibase and have found when I really look into the race form i can get winners and Woodbine often gives me winners too. Dont listen to all the pundits as i am doubtful of who to believe but enjoy my fun. good luck yourself.

With many of the bigger U.S. punters now betting on tote rebate places in Nebraska and South Dakota, Betfair appears to be waiting for the Californian OK to exchange betting. It is one way for the state to compete for lost revenues. Betfair's in is the current TVG set up.

Any observed contraction in liquidity is due to a broad economic malaise, not the new (higher) PC rules.

When people are now evidently spending less on food, which was always thought as a "recession-proof" expense, then it wouldn't be an unreasonable assumption that they are gambling less as well.

From the Telegraph business pages:

Peter Marks said that for the first time people have been cutting food budgets - normally an area that is relied upon as "recession-proof".
"People are spending less on food – that's a first," said the Co-op's chief executive. He added that he and other retailers are having to cut prices radically to shift stock.

Walked around my local ADSA yesterday and i cant believe that people are cutting back looking at the size of the trolleys (and the people incidentally!).

Have to fancy the 3 a bit at Woodbine (R5) , won recently over c/d and a decent chance on times and class for me.
