aaaah, the famous "marathon" argument.

does everyone in a marathon win???

I think not, it just takes them a little longer to lose it all.

the canadian thats wat most peoples downfall is discipline is key

discipline is a big part of it, no doubt, but if you can't pick winners all the discipline in the world ain't gonna do you any good

Not wishing to seem dis-respecful, but what "edge" do you feel you have - and how do you get it?

TC. We've been through this before. A lot of the people on this forum think of 'betting the entire bank' as meaning betting the entire capital that you can spare for betting. But you only have a portion of your entire capital ready to bet at any one time, right? You'd never bet everything you had on a horse. Would you???

Jazzycat, wow......that's a tough one......but......I posted 8 tips on here this evening and the ALL won.......you'd think I have some kind of an edge......may be.......I don't know.

If "all in" is not for you, that's fine, but don't insist that it's wrong to do it.

May be If I lost my senses, went insane and developed serious suicidal tendencies, I would.

You post is bang on. I keep a "working" balance which is a mere fraction of what I can afford to bet on this game. My "all in" refers to the working balance, not my net worth.

Couldn't disagree my friend......didn't see the winning tips (wished I had) - I've had a 22-1, and a couple of 10's + tonight which I tipped on here.... but I'm not playing "My c0ck is bigger than yours" :), and know you're not either........ "all-in" isn't for me, as I personally think it's a quick way to the poor-house, but I won't knock anyone who does it - as long as they are ready to face the consequences.....

My real question - which you didn't answer.....is why do you think you have "an edge" - serious question.....not taking the pi$$. It's OK saying you had 8 out of 8 winners (or whatever), but I'm interested in what gives you this edge, which produces 8 out of 8 winners?

why do you think you have "an edge"

My 8 winners comment was tongue in cheek. Many nights I have 8 losers as many on here can attest.

To answer your question seriously though, I've been doing this for a good living for about 20 years now. I have an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. I put myself through school by punting part time. I started off working as an equities trader for RDS. I quit that after 2 years to do this full time and have never looked back. If I didn't have an edge not only I wouldn't enjoy the lifestyle I enjoy now, but in traders parlance I would have blown up long ago.

I hope that answers your question.

But surely Jazzycat, if you find a horse that you think can't possibly lose and that ought to be 1.5, and then find that it's available for 4.00, you'd put a huge wodge of money on that, wouldn't you?

Doesn't it make sense that you'd allow yourself to put on a large sum when a can't-miss opportunity comes along? You obviously wouldn't put on so much that it would give you serious problems if you lost, but you would want to put a good sum on it. Wouldn't you?

Firstly, I would wonder why it's at 4.00 when I think it should be 1.5. Lots of factors come into play here...... do "they know" (cliche but sometimes true) - is there a reason why it's 4.00 when I think it should be 1.5...... do the people "in the know", know something I don't......if I can tick all these boxes, then......

Yep, I would go big, but never, ever, my entire bank - which is what was being suggested earlier.....

Think we're all in agreement then. Don't bet everything on one damn horse race.
