The short answer to your question is, I don't know anymore.

Here's the long answer.

The Cyprus government which hasn't voted yet (the vote keeps getting postponed) has now made public statements that they EU imposed depositor haircut "solution" will not pass parliament. The ruling party DISY will abstain and all other parties in parliament will vote NO.

What happens next is anyone's guess, my guess is the EU will miraculously find some cash under the pillow and hand it to the Cypriots so that they own banks don't collapse, which was what their concern was all about in the first place.

The damage is done however, no matter how it plays out from this point on. Confidence in the system had been shaken by anyone who can spell their own name without making a mistake.

This was a trial balloon about......silence please.....the gradual abolition of property rights. The most fundamental pillar of human rights and the foundation of a free market and a free economy.

If they can do this to your bank account, why is your property safe? Greeks have be levied "special tax" on property twice now since the crisis started with a third one in the works. If you don't pay, you are evicted and your property is confiscated. Where's the property rights Greeks (and all civilized people) thought they had?

If they can do this to your bank account and confiscate your savings, why is your gold safe from confiscation? It's been done before in the US and the subtle difference between now and then has now all been erased.  In  1933 gold was money, today it is merely an asset, it is merely property like your house or anything else you own. The subtle difference who made confiscation today extremely difficult, if not impossible, was the fundamental protection citizens of civilized democratic societies thought they had through fundamental and safeguarded by the letter of the law property rights. This fine line no longer exits.

This system needs to collapse to be reformed. It is too corrupt, too Orwellian, too powerful, too controlling and intrusive in peoples  lives to be gradually reformed. Luckily enough however (yes, yes, I know, before you say it, I don't mean to trivialize the total chaos involved with a collapse) but what started in March 2007 is an unstable force that needs to play out. The system was designed to fail from the outset, all that's taking place now is the final transfer of hard asset wealth into the hands of the friends of the money cartel. Patience.

best bet is stick it in the equities like gas n oil, buy as much of the gold silver n copper as u can and ahve some portable assets, we used to rip the piss out of rap stars for all that bling....turns out maybe they wernt that daft after all, spread your risk people

If this started a major european bank run a lot more would be at stake than 600 billion of gas, dynasties could die and governments topple.

They've run roughshod over Ireland, Portugal, Greece and even Spain and Italy, so they thought puny little Cyprus was child's play. They underestimated the public's reaction as well as the significant influence Russia holds over the island. They also underestimated international reaction.

Money isn't safe from a banking collapse. What is money if not merely a piece of paper backed by confidence? Collapse that confidence and that paper will return to its true value. So total is the states grip over our lives now that it can and probably will do anything to perpetuate its status. What you have to understand is the difference in how roman and civil law systems tend to operate and even in common law systems like (traditionally) ours and indeed America's they can pass laws forcing you to comply with their demands.

Nobody can give you any great insight or predictions because there are none to be given. All I'd say is the obvious of diversifying to the extent that you can and hope.
