i've just moved into to a property which i will be renting for a minimum of six months where no inventory has been done. The estate agents said at the time that we wouldn't bother doing one and i didn't think much of it but since moving in i have noticed things that are damaged and now wonder if i will be collared for them when i move on. These things include the timer dial missing off the wasing machine, kicker board in the kitchen split into, chrome fittings on bath deteriorated/peeling, Fabric blind has a massive red stain on when rolled down plus many other minor thing like this. None of the above and the ones not mentioned are a problem but i am now wondering whether i could have costs for these deducted from my deposit bond when i leave. Or is it the case that because no inventory has been done they can not charge me for them. I have compiled a list of problems to email to the lettings agency, is this the best thing to do or would it be best to leave it as it's the responsibility of the landlord to have done an inventory. Also whats the law about smoke detector as there are wires hanging from a ceiling unit where a wired in smoke detector used to be but the bottom half is missing so it will not function cheers
make a video record and post it somewhere online where the date can be verified, also make formal contact with the agent noting all the problems including the smoke detectors. the main risk is they may try to keep the deposit in the hope you won't be bothered to make a fuss.

I would 100% recommend taking pictures and writing a letter with the issues you've noticed. If you do as polybot suggested, it's quite easy to upload a video to YouTube.
About 10 years ago me and a mate rented a ground floor appt in Fulham. It wasn't the nicest appt in the world so as we were going to be there for a couple of years we re-painted the bedrooms, replaced the light fittings and shower curtain, and also made the garden look fantastic.
Two years later when we moved out some little Hitler went around dinging us for every small blemish and mark on the carpet. We even had to fork out for another new shower curtain. He even tried to ding me for different coloured hairs that he found on my headboard even though I don't have a hair on my big bald melon!!
It's a sad fact that no matter how pleasant a letting agent is when you move in, 99.99% of them will try to stiff you when it comes to moving day.
