make a video record and post it somewhere online where the date can be verified, also make formal contact with the agent noting all the problems including the smoke detectors.
the main risk is they may try to keep the deposit in the hope you won't be bothered to make a fuss. |

I would 100% recommend taking pictures and writing a letter with the issues you've noticed. If you do as polybot suggested, it's quite easy to upload a video to YouTube.
About 10 years ago me and a mate rented a ground floor appt in Fulham. It wasn't the nicest appt in the world so as we were going to be there for a couple of years we re-painted the bedrooms, replaced the light fittings and shower curtain, and also made the garden look fantastic. Two years later when we moved out some little Hitler went around dinging us for every small blemish and mark on the carpet. We even had to fork out for another new shower curtain. He even tried to ding me for different coloured hairs that he found on my headboard even though I don't have a hair on my big bald melon!! It's a sad fact that no matter how pleasant a letting agent is when you move in, 99.99% of them will try to stiff you when it comes to moving day. |
