I've been looking at them recently and there seems to be quite a few which look good to my untrained eye. This is the first time i've ever picked stocks so I expect to be told my picks aren't that great. I'm a novice as you know but I think some people here know their stuff so please, lets try and keep the sniping and arguing off this thread and just have a sensible adult discussion. Who knows, we might set a precedent.

I'm looking at three. Based in Australia, Mozambique and Chile. One mines mainly gold with some tin and copper. Another a rare earth metal and the final one silver/copper/gold.

Just looking for a general opinion here. After that i'll name them (one at least has been mentioned on here before so may well be recognised from those things ^. One at least definitely hasn't) and  anyone who cares can have a closer look.

there seems to be a shortage of tin, some independants are even looking into opening some of the old derelict mines in Cornwall. Because of the price they believe it is a viable operation. I am a novice like yourself so hopefully some more experienced people can give more input on this.

sentiment around mining stocks has absolutely shot away over the past year or so. even companies that are doing well for themselves are performing terribly in terms of share price. you just have to look at price action in these stocks to see that no one is interested in buying them at the moment. It's all a bit of a non event. But you know, this could possibly be a good time to buy with sentiment so low. it's got to improve at some stage?

what I think is a good plan is to buy companies that are just starting or in the middle of ramping up production (add in some exploration potential as well depending on your attitude to risk). think you get two bites at the cherry with that. if sentiment in the sector returns then you should profit in the near-medium term, or eventually long term once the profits start rolling in then the company should start to be valued sensibly. some of the valuations out there are ridiculous right now with basically zero value being assigned to what they have in the ground.

you know the coal miner i've bought anyway so i won't bother discussing that here. bought a few vedanta resources in my sipp as well if anyone has an opinion on that. think i know the chile miner you're looking at as well, have a few shares myself.

You typed all that on your knees? Impressive.....

P.S. On a more serious note, there's never been biggest drivel posted on this forum than the rubbish you just posted. To be fair though, you did a smashing job masquerading this sh1t as informed opinion.

if you aren't going to contribute anything sensible, then jog the f*ck on. Can you actually read or did the words "sensible adult discussion" go in one ear out the other?

I'm afraid you don't quite have the following here (even though you seem to have some strange idea that people hang off your every word) just to call "bullsh1t" without providing a sensible analysis.

So come on, please explain why my post was the "biggest drivel" ever. Not like you have anything better to do than jerk off in your NYC hotel room is there?

Thanks Whippet. That ties up nicely with what i've read in the last few weeks. It seems recently there has been quite a sell off in mining shares. Herencia is looking to begin production on their main mine and from my research it looks a decent buy.

The others are Noventa (the one i've seen mentioned here) and Malachite Resources Ltd. Malachite looking to begin producing their mine with an estimated 50,000 ounces of gold annually by early 2013. Potential for other large deposits apparently, including copper. Sydney based so I thought they might be ideally located to sell to the Asian market.

They also have some other projects looking at silver/tin/copper and some more lower grade gold.

Blue, when I'm lost somewhere and in need of directions, I don't ask a blind man.

If you've been following what this mug has been posting on here, which is basically "cut & paste" stuff of information that has been widely available to the public weeks before he run into it and he reacts that he just discovered a 5-carat diamond in his morning serial, then you'd know you are asking a blind man.

But to each his own......

there are a couple of decent ETFs that play the disparity in gold and gold mining stocks

i personally like some of the valuations of junior gold miners atm but if your just looking to make a play on gold miners in general, the ETF route would be best imo
