I wasn't sure if this belongs in this forum, but with all the hyperinflation discussion, what are the best barter items?

I don't plan to spend a fortune, just 100-200 or so on stuff I could easily use myself if somehow Bernanke stumbles through a railway platform and discovers hogwarts is real.

I'm looking at miniature spirits and quality chocolate.

Something like, mainly, Gordon's gin and Bell's whisky, then a mix of Smirnoff, Baileys, Cockburns (port), Three Barrels (brandy) and Bacardi (rum). Also a few mini bottles of red wine.

As for chocolate: 35g bars of green and black's 70% cocoa.

Anything else? There's the classics like toilet roll etc but more thinking of higher value and less storage space like alcohol.

Off the top of my head a few suggestions:

Medicines
Tinned soup and baked beans
Flour
cartons of cigarettes & disposable lighters
candles
Items for personal defence
batteries
seeds

I did stock up on a few essentials during the petrol strike and just after N Rock went belly up, much to the merriment of my family. I am not sure I can face the embarassment of stocking up a 3rd time and being proved wrong.

Not sure chocolate is such a great idea honestly, because it is perishable and you would get awfully fat if you end up having to eat it all yourself.

Sure inflation will eradicate your mortgage. People in debt (also governments) love inflation. However those with index-linked student loans may find they have a muli-million pound debt to pay. Also, anyone with a less-than index linked pension will be wiped out, likewise anyone with cash savings. Hyperinflation is a kind of sovereign default by stealth, so in fact some good can come out of it in the long term. But until a new stable currency is established there will be a lot of casualties along the way, so it won't be pretty.

remote cottage with a few acres of land - must be outside atomic bomb blast radius of any major city.

high tech bomb shelter, preferably two stories or more. need to be able to survive here for a few years or more during the nuclear war.

land mines and gun turrets to protect the boundary of your property. assault rifles, grenades and flamethrowers for armed combat.

As for supplies, need the following:

Petrol - this is going to run out fast, you need a large storage of this somewhere on your property.
Medication - antibiotics and anti radiation medicine. (and a few other medical supplies)
Geiger counter and radiation proof suits and masks.
Fresh drinking water supply - either bottles or from your own water treatment facility built into your bunker.
Tinned food - enough to survive for 5 years. At first you will eat the food you have produced from your land, but once the nuclear winter sets in this won't be possible.

Barter items:
Cigarettes and alcohol.

The new currency will be bottle caps, not silver and gold, so pointless keeping loads of that.

The financial system is a ponzi scheme. Nothing more.

That is not a total negative, however. Not at all.

On the one hand, it is amazing to see how much innovation and improvement has come from it, due to continued effort by the majority. On the other hand, it is distressing to see how many prominent people, supposedly at the top of the pile, have taken far too much out of it,relative to their true worth.

In fact, the relatively few have taken so much out of it, that the whole system is starting to show sign's of total collapse.

No wonder then, that the few are continually trying to find excuses to print more money, so that they can prop the whole thing up and continue to satisfy their greed.

Hyper inflation, would just show that the obscenity is being carried on to yet another level of absurdity.

If you can accept that monetary inflation is an obscenity, then you have to question whether the people behind it will ever be held accountable for their action's. My guess is, that they have absolutely no intention of doing so, which is why they have designed the system as it is.

You, like every other numbskull on here who feigns wisdom without actually ever having ever displayed  a morsel of common sense, deny the very possibility of a very common occurrence. So in that sense it's pretty hard to study something than in your feeble mind (and corresponding pea brain) can't possibly happen or exist.

The chaps who got laid were not the ones with chocolate candies, nor the ones with solar panels or whatever else you parroted from something you once read, they were the ones that could provide the birds with feminine hygiene products. All the Yoguslav chaps know this, evidently word hasn't reached NZ yet. One thing to think about, fiat currencies can be devalued overnight. I work for Travelex as i've said in the past. CHF went from 1.09 to 1.36 overnight after being pegged to the Euro.

If gold drops to below $1000 (and it won't, the Chinese won't allow it to go that low without buying shed loads of it) then happy days. I'd love to sell my metal and put a deposit down on a flat.
