Why doesn't Betfair use a automated program to update the reference price and decide on the closing price of the contracts?
This would be very easy to automate.  A lot of the time Betfair doesn't update the reference price in a timely manner.
Additionally, they settle the contract at the wrong price.  Does anyone have an explanation for this?  I know Betfair
would never answer this question for me.

I'm not sure about why they don't automate the process, but as for settling at a wrong price, any time this has happened before they have always resettled at the correct price later on as far as I am aware.

You definitely should check that they closed it correctly.  They have settled a contract incorrectly and didn't resettle the contract until I told them it was settled incorrectly.
