What companies do you think offer value? Hargreaves Lansdowne for example are they any good or not to be trusted.

Not investing much just the 3k now and £50 a month whilst I m at uni.

All opinions welcome after advice on commision charges etc too

I think hargreaves lansdowne are the cheapest if you are investing in funds.

If you are picking your own shares, then interactive investor is the cheapest; no account charges and £1.50 per share purchase with the regular investment plan.

is there any downside with going with interactive investor? That is very cheap!! Obviously for an investor with funds of £10k or less applying for a share account like barclays which is £12 a trade!! can quickly erode potential gains!!

and to be honest spykes I think its safe to say you will probably get an even better to chance to snap up cheap stocks within the next year!! Now is cheap, but they will get cheaper!!

I guess the downside is that you might not get as good a price as you would with a broker where you are dealing instantly. With the regular investment plan you can select what stocks you want to buy, and they are put through once a week on a wednesday. (they do bulk orders which is why they are able to give you £1.50 a trade). But then again, I guess you could end up getting a better price, depending how good (or bad :P) you are at timing your purchases. You can also do instant dealing with interactive investor for £10/deal though so you get the best of both worlds really.
