This year I will mostly be investing in:

1. Herencia Resources (HER) - 3.40p

2. Strategic Natural Resources (SNRP) - 26.48p

3. Condor Resources (CNR) - 9.57p

4. Cadogan Petroleum (CAD) - 49.00p

5. Ortac Resources (OTC) - 1.61p

6. PC gold (PKL)- $1.02

7. Orogen Gold (ORE) - 1.04p

I am planning to hold all these long term. As you will notice, they are mostly mining companies. Commodities, and especially gold and silver, will increase in value over the coming decade, so buying mining companies is a leveraged play on that.

I've tried to pick companies with at least some resources already - provided they can at least get their mine(s) into production (big if Silly), commodity prices should ensure you shouldn't come out too badly even if further exploration doesn't reveal any "bonanza" grades.

As most projects seem to fail at the feasibility stage, I've tried to go for projects where resources can be extracted via open-pit, or redevelopment of old mines (in the case of PKL, ORE, OTC), i.e at a lower cost. That may remove one barrier to feasibility, although there are obviously many other things to consider.

I think this is probably the peak time to be investing in mining juniors - there has been under investment in this sector for the past 20 years; there is increased demand for metals particularly from emerging markets; any company producing or starting to produce over the next decade should do particularly well if prices increase.

I'm always on the lookout for new investments, so the above isn't exhaustive. Add yours below. Blush

On three from that list Whippet so thanks for the heads up for two of the others. Will have a bit of reading to do today. I mentioned on a different thread but Clontarf Energy (CLON) - 5.00p has huge potential. Its a punt due to the Ghana legal issue still to be resolved but I've taken the risk.

Also have Range Resources (RRL) 19.75p in my portfolio although I do wonder was it because I could use my ISA allowance with them.

EO. has a particularly interesting story.

Much potential with lurking predators around.

BOUGHT SOME EO. @ 117 EARLIER---takeover talk (poss from Premier) looks close, but EO have new oil finds & I think the board are holding out for 250p +;when before 200p seemed adequate

also hold BPC,MXP & SXX

Whippet, that looks veeery exposed, reliant on POO and pr metal boom (or bubble).
Just one major holding in oil for me left, NZO.nz at .85, it has oil, NG, exploration and also a small chance of recovering investment from sale of Pike River, would be reluctant to but anything solely on POO spec.

Price Of Oil that is.

possibly, I can't think of many small cap's I'd rather invest in though than mining/oil. The thing I don't like about other small cap sectors, e.g pharma/bio/tech, is you are basically trying to reinvent the wheel with some of their research, instead of just finding some stuff in the ground and digging it up. I can't for the life of me see metal prices going down over the next 10 years. Ok, we might not see some of the ridiculous prices some people talk about (like $5000 gold), but it should go up at least a bit.

Obviously I have other sector exposure in other parts of my portfolio. But for the high risk stuff, I'm sticking with mining/oil.

what do you call long term? Ive been reading up on Herencia and like the look of it.

Where do you guys get into AIM shares? Looked at Herencia, the spread at IG index is shocking.
Report Whippet April 19, 2011 5:31 PM BST
I'm looking at minimum 2 years on these, and will sell at the point any of them start to become producers, or are bought out. (although if something happens to the global markets in the mean time I might bail out of all of them)

The spreads can indeed be quite bad on AIM stocks, HER usually has a spread of about 0.1p

cool thanks- Herencia is funded for 2 years now... expecting major discoveries later this year.. could be a decent earner over a few months dont u think?

GGP - 2.70p

big year for this share.  gone under the radar so far but has a good management team and a lot of exciting prospects plus it has a tiny market cap.

high risk no doubt, but the rewards could be very big indeed.
