For anyone trading fx or interested in trading fx, you won't see a better chart than the AUD for january 2011.After taking a nice size position b4 christmas I've been trading it all january. Both day trades and postion trades.  About 70% shorts and 30% longs.

Everytime it gets to parity. it has a heart attack and falls back. Its simply a matter of waiting till parity approaches and shorting.Use appropriate position sizing and stops.Just this morning it hit  a dollar  again for about 1 minute b4 falling back to a  low of 99.40.The trade took 1.5 hours.

Take a look.

It beats working!Love

If you shorted the AUD today, you just had your scalp handed to you on a platter.

Up a massive 1.85pc as I type this:

I still think gold will head towards $1250-1300 over the next few weeks, before establishing a position there for a while, before increasing again later in the year. Silver, will probably do something similar. I can't see it going below about $26.50.

In other markets, I also think we are at the beginning of a bit of a bull run on equities tbh. Long on any US stocks is a good plan, at least for the near term.

On to other things, one stock I believe you should check out ben is Illumina Inc. I have tipped this stock a few times on this board, starting when it was at $40 earlier this year (I've been in for a number of years now). Now trading at $71, but there is potentially massive, massive upside in this still. Some analysts have a target price of $85 for this in the short term, but I see it being several times that in the medium to long term.

The company is pretty much entrenched as the leading sequencing instrument provider. I have gone through all rival technology with a fine tooth-comb, and there is nothing out there that can compete. Well, actually, that isn't entirely true. There is a new technology being developed by a company called Oxford Nanopore which I think looks rather good. Details of the system was released last week, and it is potentially massive and would revolutionise sequencing. The good news, however, is that Illumina have already agreed a sales/marketing agreement for this technology, and already own a large % of shares in oxford nanopore. There is a strong possibility that they would in fact takeover nanopore at some point.

So for these reasons, this share is a massive buy. The market for sequencing instruments is set to grow 20% a year anyway, which means minimal downside for this share. If a sequencer could be made cheap enough, which future illumina/nanopore technology could do, then we would see massive demand for sequencing, and the market would be worth billions a year. With 6 billion people on this planet, most of which could benefit from having their genome sequenced, you can see the huge potential this has, if it can be made cheap enough. I see it a lot like the computer revolution, which started out with massive machines that only a few people owned, and has now developed into what we have today. Genome sequencing will go the same way, provided it is made cheap enough. Whilst we won't need our very own sequencer at home, there are certainly benefits of having one at every hospital, clinic or doctors surgery.

Illumina's market cap is only $8.9 billion at the moment, so as you see, the potential is huge. Definitely a great bet, as at worst, you would see a reasonable return on your investment over a few years. At best, well, you will make loads.

There's definitely a lot of potential in the biotech industry, and also biopharmaceuticals. This is another area that links well to DNA sequencing. If that is made cheap and fast, then companies researching very targeted treatments will benefit massively. This industry will eventually become what big traditional pharma used to be, and we will gradually see companies like Pfizer and GSK die off, the process of which has already began.

I have been alerted to some potentially massive products by my industry contacts, and am currently conducting due diligence on these companies. I will let you know my findings in due course.

Good luck with your trades, not that you need it. keep up the good work. Grin

I hope you realize that Mr Bean's prediction is gold under $1,000 by 3rd Qtr 2011 which is diametrically opposed to your expectation.......so tone it down on the hugs and kisses a little bit, it always made you look kind of pathetic anyways.

In other markets, I also think we are at the beginning of a bit of a bull run on equities tbh

The beginning??? Where have you been for the last 23 months, hiding under a rock??? The formula is simple, as long as the FED continues to drown the markets with liquidity, the markets will continue to move up. The minute the FED stops (if the USG ever figures out a way to cut their massive deficit in half - very doubtful), then not so much. It's the only "fundamental" you needed to know to trade these markets. Short term, it's a long overdue correction you need to worry about.

one stock I believe you should check out ben is Illumina Inc

Amazingly enough you seem to have bought at bottom for the year AGAIN since the stock was trading at $50 a month earlier. And if you use the $50 as your start point instead of the year's low then the stock hasn't outperformed the index by that much. I must admit that I haven't done any in-depth research on Illumina but when I see a an one year P/E ratio of 88 and an EV/FCF ratio of 35 over the trailing 12 months I usually flip the page and move on. Time will tell though and I do wish you luck with it.

Overall, a fairly decent post by you, may be because you finally posted something without expletives or blowing LoveLoveLove at Mr Bean.

Good luck.

Too easy whippet!!!!

Did'nt think we would get so much so quick!! Its volatility is a truely beautiful thingLove

Platinum is up 60$ since I bought it, check it out, headed over 2000$ soon.

Was watching a programme on commodities in general this morning, cotton hit 50 year highs apparently, sugar is near all time highs, many commodities, especially softs are going on bull runs.

The programm argued that population coupled with inceased living standards means demand is increased, but supply, due to weather events is in a perilous condition.

I think i will check out more softs and get involved.Follow the bulls up and  then get out as the bubble forms.

Hi Ben,

How are you getting on at the moment?

Silver is up to $33 now, happy days. Blush

It looks like the small sell off on equities earlier this week has been halted, and the upwards trend has resumed. Onwards and upwards from here. Looks like those perma mugs who were gloating about the small correction have been well and truly shafted. Small corrections aren't really a problem for me, as I have been long equities since the golden cross on most indicies back in October. Blush

You must be doing well trading the AUDUSD atm? It just hit 1.0172, I am going to wait till it hits 1.02 before shorting it again. Easy money Happy

Good luck and happy trading.

Trading in this way is like p*ssing in the wind. As a retail trader you should look to ride the trades of the big guys, not take them on, as you are likely to lose.

In February A/U has been ranging from 99.6 to 1.018. You are shorting towards the bottom of that range.

In the last month A/U couldn't hold a close below parity, and parity is likely to be acting as support, rather than resistance.

In my opinion you are better off looking for reversal signals rather than having a number in your mind and hoping that it reverses there.

Good luck though.
By:
Mrben
When: 28 Feb 11 02:09
thanks for your thoughts pastie. But I have to disagree big time. The problem with riding with the big guys is by the time i realise what they are doing its usually too late.Im not much good at that.

Your right about the base moving up but  the AUD is still range trading big time. The current ceiling is 1.02 ish, short anywhere near  there and its money 4 jamBlush

eg the friday close was 101.78, at midday monday its 101.31.

Also Im a total non believer in indictators/ signals etc. I just watch price action.I'm not saying it wrong as i know guys who work for the corps who are totally technical traders. Its just not 4 me.

Take a good look at the AUD and you can see the 2- 2.5 cent range usually over a 2/3 week period. It really is a beautiful chart.

A friend has been doing something similar with the euro, but not short , going long.Opportunites  during the last 6+ months are the  most i have ever seen in a number of tradeables.

Good luck for you as well.

BTW- nice pic!lololololololo

No probs.

There are always little mini-trends that can run counter to the main trend. However, I usually work the opposite way to you. In forex there are a millions different ways of making (and losing) $$$. With A/U in a strong uptrend I'd rather wait for a retracement and buy at support. However, even strong trends run out of steam.

I've put my indicators on an AU chart and the move up today should be capped below  around 1.019 before retracing down to around 1.007 (50% retracement from recent move up) or 1.006 (a former resistance level that may now act as support).

Below that is a trendline that forms an ascending triangle. This is a bullish formation. It looks quite clear on the daily chart. Buying on a reversal back upwards here would give you a strong chance of some $$$ (in my opinion).

If it breaks and closes below here you should be in the $$$!

Hi Pastie, yes if your doing th opposite to be at the other end of the spectrum you must be making a killing as well!!Love
I know all about the ascending/decending trianglles , it would have to be one of the more reliable  methods for sure.

Im going to get on the train with you and start going long when it reaches the bottom of the range.

Hope you got out somewhere near the 1.02 on this cycle. As I write this  the beloved AUD is dropping through 101.08LoveLoveLoveBlush

The treasurer here has stated that GDP  will be off in the 3rd quarter due to floods and cyclone. Not to mention that china may actually slow down to 8% or less.

Fully expecting it to go below 101 today , if it hits 100.50 or less it will be a big result for me.

Would appreciate it if you could post  should it  go outside the triangle.

    Cheers

Hi MrBen

AU has had a bounce from 1.008 ish. The bounce should be capped between 1.0132 to 1.014 before heading back down.

However, it's in the middle of a range so no point in adding to any positions.

Still a 110 or so pips away from the slope of the triangle.

I wouldn't take any notice of Wayne Swan. Almost as clueless as Jooliaaa.

wipeout, care to share with us why exactly 1.02 is the magic number? Is it because of analyzing charts, is it because of some MA, is it because of some other TA, is it because you consulted a tarot reader, or is it because you simply just pulled it out of your arse?

The funniest thing about this thread is that neither you or MrBean seem to have a clue why the AUS is doing what is doing. Pastie at least posted some reference to TA as his basis for making decisions on direction.

In the meantime, keep piling up those imaginary profits.

Well, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. You aftertime trades on here that are pure fiction, why wouldn't you claim that I said things that are pure fiction.

If you post my post where I recommended on this forum that hyperinflation was a certainty or hyperinflation was the way to trade 2011, I WILL NEVER POST ON THIS FORM AGAIN. Otherwise, the whole forum would know you are a liar.

For the record, if we assume that some actually was making hyperinflation bets for 2011, I would say GOLD UP, SILVER UP, OIL UP, COMMODITIES UP, USD DOWN, S&P UP is the way they would have played it and it would be outrageously profitable.

As opposed to those who ended up in the poor house following this ignorant drivel:

Looks like Ben was right about his assertions on that other thread.

Spot on whippet!!

but I know why melly is obsessed. He does'nt trade. He is too busy taking trips to new york and scanning the horizon for signs of hyperinflationLaughLaughLaughLaugh

actually the real reason is ....... melly has NEVER TRADED!  You dont see people posting here who do trade saying its not possible.Because they know very well it is.

J2 has posted that he is 23yo and  does not trade but buys metals, and sits on them presumably. He is a hyperflation/melly supporter. Can't really give him too hard a time as at 23yo he has little experience.Thats why he supports melly.

Melly is the same.He has little experience and does not trade.Hence he simply does not understand long, short, hedge,  long stops and oh this one he seems to have missed completly- PROFIT TAKING. I  don't think he's heard of it.

Anyway who really cares, he's a waste of space and internet ink { and its all free}.It is entertaining though to watch someone so totally clueless try to defend himself. There really are some dropkicks on forums.

Au contraire my ill-tempered friend. Like Soros once said, good traders have an open mind and are flexible enough to change their position 180 degrees fairly quickly. I have no problem with anyone posting that they do that, in fact in the past, and with all the volatility in the markets, I frequently done it myself.

What I do have a problem with is someone like you and MrBean, posting one position which results in heavy loses but aftertiming later that you made massive profits instead WITHOUT EVER POSTING THAT YOUR POSITIONS WERE AT SOME POINT REVERSED.

Since you insist in using this forum as your exclusive bragging rights domain, those can only be considered legitimate and truthful when those SWINGS in positions are posted. In the absence of those, we can only assume that you are still taking loses from your original position you posted and your aftertimed profits are pure fiction.

I mean even you two birdbrains must agree that WITHOUT posting swings, then anyone is able to claim anything one here. Everyone under that scenario simply CAN NOT LOSE. For example, Mr Beans by now infamous "Gold down, silver down, USD up- thats the way to bet from here" still stands.....if he still has any money left that is.

MrBean to this day has NEVER followed up with a post apologizing for his grotesquely wrong recommendation or retracting it so one can only assume the worse. A post that started with "I fecked up, here's my new position" would have gone a long ways in gaining benny some credibility on here but it was sadly never posted, nor do I expect one in the future. Or, may be he is STILL actually expecting gold to be under $1,000 by 3rd Qtr 2011 and that's why there's been no retraction.

But in the mean time, we're expected to swallow hook, line and sinker that benny makes money with every uptick or downtick in the AUD. Suuuuure........
