I'm considering this for my mortgage etc when we move house, it seems like a good idea in principle.

However I'm not sure I like the idea of having a bank account with a massive negative balance that I can never really tell how much of this month's pay packet I've got left.

Likewise to get the most of it the wife and I would both need to put our salaries into it, something we've avoided to date as we like to be fairly independent money wise, it saves a lot of hassles.

Is there anyway of sort of setting money aside within it, like allocating £2k a month as spending money say, or somehow keeping track of it separately or whatever?

I've (we've) had one for many years, and I'm very happy with them, always get through on the phone no problem, and service is always excellent.
You can allocate your transactions in to different categories although I've never bothered.
Generally these all in one accounts are not the lowest rates you can find so it will generally only benefit those with decent sums in savings to offset.
