Chisel - please qualify your advice as there may be some novices on here who might just think you are the second coming due to some of your recent posts.

KRACKERS - with respect you have not been on this part of the forum for the last 18 months. If you had you wouldn't be patting Chisel on the back for his banking sector prowess.

Just read on the share chat site I go to that a couple of the Sunday papers had advised that Rbs shares were one of their tips to buy

I shall have to sift through some of the archives of the broadsheets, to see if there are any positive sign for the banks held in the grasp of UKFI.

Both RBS and Lloyds remain at risk whilst the Government spins it's own political yarn on bank ownership. I have yet to see a detailed plan from the boards of the banks in question, and intentions of the Government, as to how the Governemts holding is to be redeemed.

a) I want to see a repayment plan from the banks to redeem the preference shares i.e change out government capital, for capital generated by the banks themselves

b) a statement from the Government on how they intend to offload their holding. The wedge they hold at a purchase price of 31p for RBS, and 38p for Lloyds should be on the table already, as these holding can be sold at a profit.

What we are seeing is a Government who apparently saved these banks by re-capitalising them, but are now trying to use them as a piggy bank of their own.

If these banks can come up with a viable plan to recapitalise that is agreeable to the Government, then the Gov should start backing out of these businesses.

The overall market capital of these businesses will remain under a cloud until we see some action on these issues.

The public will want to seet the govenment do more than simply get the money back. Recapitalisation and higher profit margins will inevitably push share prices up again. From these low levels there is going tgo be very big profit going forward.

The potential remains for the creation of about another 40bn shares due to clauses in the Asset Protection Scheme.

Should the worse case scenario, and the above number of shares are created, then there will be c.96bn RBS shares on the market.

Of course your Gov will want to maximise the return, but the intentions of Gov and the board of directors will have a huge influence on the share price. Whether there are 56bn shares in circulation or 96bn will certainly make a difference.

Fester is publicly talking up 3-5 years before they stand on their own feet (with the associated repayments/grovelling), so they're a big no no for me.

I think you must assume that the intention is to exercise the B shares at some future time, although could be years away or not. Possibly vis-a- via a LLoyds Bank type rights issue where they are converted into ordinary shares through a public offer leaving the government's holding unchanged. With the potential for 91 billion ordinary shares in issue, its very difficult imo to see the potential for much upside even from the current 36p share price.

Absolute pants! When the profits come the share price will rise. No dividend will mean that profit will stayin the banks, making them stronger and more attractive to investors. I still think there is mileage in buying the shares of RBS and LLoyds

Agree chisel.

Threat of nationalisation now gone...only one way for these shares to go......as a medium/long term investment I think they represent a great buy

if rbs are not a great buy at 40p or so,then might as well leave the country as if you think its bad now,you aint seen nothing yet.

NO worries on this one whatsoever! Banks are creaming it in at the moment, and 40 pence is looking cheap even now.

How do you think the bank charges? more bad debt? credit agreement challenges? will affect the banks chisel?
By:
Debt Regret
When: 21 Jul 09 19:12
they are pretty well positioned to deal with the billions they will lose in charges reclaims and agreements challenges.

the whole point of this challenge in the house of lords on the charges is too allow some claims to fall off the 6 year limitations act... will save em plenty on that alone.
By:
SuperGlue
When: 21 Jul 09 20:21
Wouldn't think so dr. I'd believe that people are being charged more now becasue of whats happening. Plus a lot of banks have added new fees.
By:
SuperGlue
When: 21 Jul 09 20:23
And the courts position will be to repay everybody, not just claimants, in a state v the banks merry-go-round imo. Should be fun.
By:

When: 22 Jul 09 08:26
Creduit agreement challenges simply will not be allowed to happen. As for banks charges. Well , they kno wwhat they may have to pay out and have set money aside.

Like Super Glue says. Banks have already increased teh charges for absolutely every service they provide, as well as increasing margins on lending. I am 100% confident that from tyeh level of share price on offer, there is absolutely no down side. I admit though, I would choose RBS over Lloyds group. I am concerned that HAlifax /BOS were in a far worse state than any other UK institution. And that is saying something!

why listen to a broker. their full of **tt. at the end of the day banks will allways make a profit. personally i think rbs will hit £1 within 12 months and lloyds £3 within 12-18 months. gut instinct. so far never been wrong when it comes to bank shares. wade in and sit back and enjoy.

robin!

Thta would be nice but even I am not quite that optimistic!

With the money in teh investment banks it would not surprise me if these banks were sold by the giovernemnt for a profit way befor ethe sahre price reaches those heady levels!
