Why would the government want to shift shares at present prices? They have a year to go to general election. What better way to woo voters than show them what a great investment it was saving the banks!! Banks are recapitalising, and with no dividends being paid to shareholders their balance sheets are growing nicely.. Only thing to keep investors interested is potential to capital growth. Question is, will saving the banks be enough to save the LAbour Government.... NO WAY! |

Bank shares are recovering spectacularly. RBS now 41 pence which is 300% up from the low... It is truly a monumental recovery and with lenders like Abbey increasing profits DESPITE 17% unemployment , housing market crashing in SPain and UK the only way is up!

Got out of barclays @ 218 last week, cannot understand why it has surged since yesterday.
By:
It's partly because HSBC recomended Barclays, Lloyds and RBS yesterday as a buy because the risks of share dilution has passed.

probably go up to 80-100p in the greatest suckers rally of all time, expect the Government (amidst new found euphoria) to take credit for solvig the banking crisis and missing an opportunity on a SepOct election.
Then as the ftse hits 5000 and the dow 9500/10000 and the sheep get in at these crazy prices on unchmaged fundamentals a wave of selling GREATER than that of autumn 08 hits town as the message finally hits home that this is not a V shaped recession ride it for most of the summer but i dont see the rally extending any furth (in time and value than quoted) i can see prices way below the lows of Mar 09 |

Don't understand what people are worrying about
Sentiment is currently very positive, the banks are very buoyant because six months ago, the feeling was that we were in the middle of a meltdown not seen since the last ice age. What is now obvious is that govts will not let the banks go to the wall, taking that as a starting point, I doubt it will be too long before the banks are trading at levels seen last spring, minus the increased shares in circulation. Am holding BARC, but will switch to RBS Friday, if they have a decent update. |
By:
Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, bascially gambling and gamnbling with state involvment and twisited incentives, no investor can take RBS seriously now we live in soviet Britain.

Another kick in the goolies for the doom mongers! Fair play to anyone that had teh balls to get involved, and I include the governmnet in that!
Stock markets up another 2.5% today , above 4300 which is a massive increase from lows.. Question has to be if the worst is over? |
By:
ask yourself has the economy felt the full force of unemployment
By:
sell into the bounce, absolute no brainer.
By:
Deffo going to be a large drop while banks/pensions scramble to claw back some profits for the coming quarter.
By:
sold everything i own today. Vodafone, HSBC and Rio Tinto. Cant see any reason for such a big rise
today. The unemployment situation is only gonna get worse in the short term. |

So the government are now looking at a 50%+ profit on the last intrusion into RBS business. A nice £2.5bn+ profit.
If Brown wants to claw back the dough he ploughed in at 65p a share then he'd be as well to start backing out the governments strangle hold on the bank now, before it's weakened further. I have no involvement in the shares in this bank, but I do feel that the government should be banking the easy profit now, as their original intent wasn't to make a wedge on this intervention....something they're likely to** up if Darlings not careful. Standard Chartered are the latest bank to come out and say how well they're doing.....I wonder whether any of this has been at the expense of RBS withdrawing from some of the markets they were operating in last year. The longer the government hold on to the shareholding the more the damage to the bank. We're in this mess as a result of counterfeit capitalism....so we can do without the long term intervention of these socialists in capitalists clothing before a gain turns back to a loss for the nation. The full funding of the banks will be recovered if the government don't use these banks as a vehicle for their own political gain. |

looking for a nice juicy dividend?
By:
Fingers crossed this weeks announcement.

It is not about a juicy dividend at the moment. Give the guy some credit for putting his money where his mouth is. Dividends are not all they are cracked up to be. Keeping profits within the company and enabling the banks to recapitalise could make shares worth much more in teh long run. Paying a dividend siomply reduces teh value of a share anyway! . If you are that worried about getting a little income all you have to do is sell a few shares that have increased in value. As long as you dont go over your capital gains limit there is no harm in that is there? Going forward I believe companies should keep more cash, pay smaller dividends and encourage peopel to sell a few shares to get an income! |

i was being sarcastic mate
By:
did anyone here buy barclays at sub £1/share?? i cant believe they're now at £3 - must be the sell of all time!!
By:
Nothing wrong with selling for a profit! What are you suggesting??
Banks are giving a trading update soon and figures are expected to be good. If they are the sell of all time I suggest you get on SPreadex and sell them!! Put your money where your mouth is instead of slating people that have |
By:
i expect the bank figures will be good - perhaps because we have just borrowed the next 20 years worth of labour to bail them out
By:
Government will eventually sell for a profit..May take a year , may take 5 but taxpayer will get the money back! The government has bought assetts which have a worth. It is not like buying air!!!
Unless they collapse of course, then WE will be paying the money back |
By:
It's amazing how banks can book liabilities on their books as assets.
