The FTSE 100 Index made steady gains as investors seized on better news from the UK jobs market.
The London market finished 34.5 points ahead at 5320.3 as the first fall in Jobseeker's Allowance claimant count since February 2008 lifted spirits. Unemployment edged closer to 2.5 million but experts said the figures offered more evidence of a return to growth for the UK in the final quarter of 2009.
